Circle or Circus

A photo from the past confirms
there was a time when life seemed
free and uncomplicated. Returning
from holiday on Devon’s coast: an
impulse – let’s drop in on the Henge.
Freedom to roam on ancient stone.
A free-for-all to marvel and touch
our past, when only the devout and
curious hogged our beloved Sarsen
on summer solstice: an inconvenience
that would bother no one at 4 a.m.
World Heritage; Hippy fantasy; Devil
worship; aerosol toting cowboys and
would be entrepreneurs’ with one eye
on a musical main chance gave those
who wish to control us the excuse they
needed to make you, so-near-yet-so-far.

Hi Ed. I remember wandering round touching the stones when I was a child, and I remember the disappointment when we could no longer get close because of the vandals. Well written - yes, an excuse for the control freaks to get in an ruin things.

I guess they'd say that we
I guess they'd say that we wouldn't want the 'heritage' damaged even more, the old story of 'abuse it and lose it'. I remember a lively young lady from Holland visiting Ludlow castle with us and thinking she could go climbing on the half ruined walls, and my having to tell her that that really wasn't allowed to her disappointment – but we could 'feel' them and get close enough to really see!
Good title! Rhiannon

Great message Ed!
Great message Ed!
"A proactive change," it is often stated, "to ensure the site remains in it's natural state, for the enjoyment of future generations!" - Just like so many things that hold such value for previous generations who know that the greatest enjoyment to be had, is that of being able to connect & feel the past as it fills one's soul. Ironically, and that missed, the next generation must always be the poorer for their inability to connect, just like the ones who created the very' need' for the change!
Take care and stay connected, we are all richer for that...
