Smells like the rain

When I love you
it smells like the rain
hitting a hot pavement
in May.
It hurts
not like
caterpillars breaking their toes
but because I can't
stroke it,
frame it
or lock it in a box marked 'keep forever'.
I can't serve it with mashed potato or ice-cream
or pick it up with my feet,
bring it out in the evenings and
throw it over my knees to keep warm.
I can't dance it through fields
and wonder at it
through binoculars.
Or kiss it softly
in the place where it counts.
It's just there,
becomes everywhere.
Sometimes it makes me feel sick.

You never know what's going to turn up but I,m glad this did. It's grown on me a lot since I first read it - that's always a good sign. Congratulations on the cherry pick too.

thank you for all your lovely comments. I have tried turning this into a song as well but might stick with poetry for now!
