Along the bank of the Dee (Chester)

Across the ancient bridge,
down the steps…..
Away from the traffic’s steady thrum
and the weir’s relentless rush
On past the water wheel…
At last I hear harmonious birdsong
and relax,
having fled the hubbub and the masses
A light rain cools
me, and speckles my glasses
I see wonderful nature
Scared squirrels skitter up leafy trees
Unruffled ducks shelter in the bank’s light rushes
Moorhens perch precariously on overhanging branches
On the river, seagulls splash and preen,
imperious swans appear elegant and serene
Herons still and steadfast in pursuit
stalk atop boughs, boats, and barges
Under Victoria’s bridge I pass,
smiling and nodding to fellow escapees,
later to be entranced
by a mallard couple and their bow wave v’s
Eventually the path widens for a wildflower vista
where like others in their idylls,
my dreams glisten

Nice to see how much
Nice to see how much flourishes so near the town's hubbub, and can be such benefit to the weary. Rhiannon

This is such a beautiful poem
This is such a beautiful poem Tony, it bought back memories of my own visit to Chester and walking along beside the river.
Very much enjoyed.
Jenny.
