True Dark

At childhoods window, darkly stare
true dark hiding everywhere
dark in your eyes when the light goes out
where to find such true dark now?
We went to the wood
were the giant oaks grew
but the trees held the stars in their leaves
and the wood was blue
We went to the churchyard
but candles lit to honour the dead
glowed in gothic windows
and the churchyard was red
We woke and looked out
to beat the dawn
but nightlights of babies
breathed delicate dreams
and the world was new-born
There is no true dark
no dead of the night
no bogeyman hiding
somewhere out of sight
even at midnight
on All-Hallows Eve
there is no true dark
clap if you believe

A reassuring look at
A reassuring look at Halloween to allay a child's fear. An optimistic version which gives a different perspective of an event often viewed with a gloomy eye.
A good poem, Shirley.
