Friendships in college

We talked for hours on end
I even walked with her on the way home
though my feet felt like they’d collapse
with every step.
She irked me at times true enough
I forgave her every time.
Unlike a sister, a stranger, or mere acquaintance
We were friends.
Soon when graduation day
arrived
I held on to her hand
and swung it in the air
It felt like holding
on to brass
It used to feel like feather
Unlike a sister, an acquaintance
But not unlike a stranger.
We were friends
with an expiration date.

This really captures those
This really captures those transient friendships that feel so vital at the time. Hopefully they will form part of some very happy memories.
Just a proofreading point - the spelling of acquaintance, which needs correcting.
