Maths For Jupiter

Because I know I have to go to school in de mornin and do maths which frightens de total life out of me, it’s certainly a relaxing ting ta sit at me bedroom window and luk up at de stars as dey pop der little heads out of de night sky. I’m lukin fur Jupiter but it’s hard ta find and it’s me favourite planet. Like a big juicy orange in de buks and dat’s me favourite fruit.
De only set of stars I can make out is de Plough because we wur taught about it in school – it involves some people in Irish history: James Connolly, Sean O’Casey. I remember all de names but not much of what dey mean even though I must admit dat Mr. O’Hare is gud at teaching history. But not at maths. Maths are crippled in his hands and dead by de time dey get to mine.
My windowsill is high up so it feels like I’m closer to de sky when I sit here. I don’t have to worry about fallin off because me bed is just below me – if I slip off I’ll have a soft landin.
When all ye have is space spread out over you and all de stars in der millions, wit no people around ya rabbitin away about maths since all de world’s asleep, ye can float up in yer thoughts and explore de planets like yer Captain Kirk wit Spock and McCoy by yer side ta help out. And dere’ll be aliens galore, some of dem friendly, some of dem not. Up dere, Spock can do de multiplication tables. Yoo’ll have yer hands full wit de alien governments showing dem de road to peace.
It wud be great to have a telescope right now. Maybe den I wud be able ta find Jupiter. Yep, a telescope wud let me leave de world and see de stars faster----dat’s a plus.
But I’d need a lot of money to get a telescope. And to use it right, I’d probly have to study maths or someting so----dat’s a minus.
Is it wort doin maths fur Jupiter? I dunno.
I’m goin ta bed now because me bum is sore from sittin on dis windowsill so long. Dere’ll be maths again soon. I’ll wake on Earth again and dere’ll be fractions and decimals. And I’ll be driftin in unknown space far far from Jupiter. But I’ll keep lukin every night whut de hell. Even minus a telescope forever.

'Crippled in his hands and
'Crippled in his hands and dead by the time they get to mine'. I have been searching all my life for a description of how I was taught maths, and now I've found it.
