Iconoclasts

What Philistines we were.
We iconoclasts,
idle smashers of idols and ideas.
There were no poets but the beats
and no composers save three-chord wonders
and no film-makers but Lucas and Spielberg.
We
Knew
Everything.
Everything
Worth
Knowing.
History began
in the year of our birth
Nineteen Hundred And Sixty One.
Before us
there was nothing.
I remember how it was.
Do you?
Remember our dad’s music,
it was crap, we knew it was.
We embraced the counter culture,
not knowing that culture counted
or that we were using fingers to count it,
when we needed a calculator.
Our sacred cows,
our shibboleths,
our beliefs,
our certitudes,
are nothing
to our children's
children's children -
they are iconoclasts too.

I especially like the counter
I especially like the counter/culture word play in there. Thank you :)

This is so true Ewan.
It made me think about a comment by my brother who reached "awareness" during the punk era. In the late 80's he couldn't figure out why the yuppy era teens were so lamblike. I guess money doesn't just talk it also proselytizes.
