The locals call it Chicken Pizza
Its sacrificial wells and ball courts
silent long before the conquistadors
ignored it and sold the land for
for raising cattle. But the city refused
to be forgotten raising its head
above the jungle that engulfed it.
Its Mayan inhabitants spread far
and wide over lost centuries until
tamed by Spain and the cross of Dios.
The fabled city for intrepid explorers
finally released from the jungle’s arms
and the snake laughs as seasons pass.
