Butterflies
Jennifer Pickup, 16.09.2024
Another warm September day –
I watch the mourners make their way
Into the building of goodbyes,
With tightened lips and leaking eyes.
Familiar music starts to play
And family members have their say –
A reading here, a photo there,
We round it off with The Lord’s Prayer.
Like Déjà vu, life on repeat,
Far too soon I’ve retraced my feet –
I look at her and as she cries,
I focus on the butterflies.
They scatter sunlight with their flight,
And on the flowered bush alight –
I watch them through the wall of glass
While life and death are crossing paths.
Brown and orange, and cream and white,
So delicate, a pure delight –
They do not care for human grief,
Subscribe to a divine belief.
My memories have been invoked –
Two years of tears become unchoked,
But sunlit wings uplift my soul,
And Nature’s beauty makes me whole.
I know how hard it is to read
A poem for someone you need,
Someone you can no longer touch –
A heart your heart misses too much.
But as the final song sounds out,
I’m sure beyond shadows of doubt
That when we die there is rebirth –
A butterfly is placed on Earth.

What a beautiful idea.
What a beautiful idea. Focusing on the beauty around us can indeed help with grief. This is a lovely poem to read.

Such a stunning reflection on nature which is seen on what would normally be a melancholy occasion. I love how the last stanza brings hope that our late loved ones are watching over us, because I believe this too.
Many thanks for sharing this emotional poem.
Jenny..
