Deep in the rich woods

they hear the owl

and, two nights later

they see it

that silver phantom.

 

Listing on the current

it listens

for mammal breath

sent in stalagmites

from the still thicket.

 

Glowing on the hearth

the housecat cheeks

jellied chicken chunks

craves the heat and carnage

of the still-beating heart.

... in my life, and I often thought that this tinned food must be a terrible disappointment and no match for a bit of heat and carnage. Much in the way that the oppressive weight of an eiderdown quilt is just too much to sleep under - the opulence of modern life - a strangulation of our wild, animal nature.
