I'm always a sucker for an old-style creepy story, and they're harder to write than they seem; it's tempting to succumb to cliche.
But I did enjoy this. An unnamed horror ( thank god for that, would have been ruined by a cheesy description!) in a well-described mundane setting. Just the ticket.
Could do with a bit of editing here and there, but then what doesn't?
Nice one Maddan.
And now a well-deserved cherry too...
Well done the Cherry People.
I read this story when it was submitted and I'm not surprised it's been cherried. (sudden feeling of self-congratulation, like when you've already read a Booker-shortlisted novel!) The sense of unease builds steadily, hitting the right note. Not too melodramatic, and the ending doesn't let you down. M R James would be proud!
Josie, you mention the story could do with some editing - do you have any examples (after all, we're all here to improve our writing)?
Thanks folks. I actually met MR James today. He didn't seem all that proud, in fact he didn't say much at all.
