You know they say a good and loving family makes a man whole. I guess that's true, but who cares what I think. Anyway, this is a tale, no a document, of another man. His name was Mike Barnes, a former L.A.P.D narcotics officer with a bloody and tragic past. This was his story, the story of a broken man...

"Hey Mike," Jack said, "you still coming over to our barbeque on Monday?" "Yeah man it's like we don't see ya anymore." Tom said. Mike was on the L.A.P.D narcotics team, his partner Jack was a large, broad shouldered British man of forty-five. Next to him was Tom, a young friend of Mike. Damn kid, his attitude was going to get him killed someday. Mike had light brown hair and was slightly smaller than Jack, with deep blue eyes.
"Huh? Sure, I've just been busy with the new baby about to come, she's due in a week." "Congrats," Tom said eagerly. "Thanks Tom." They sat in their squad car outside the drug hustlers suspected warehouse. "Everyone get ready," Mike whispered into the Radio. "Move!" They burst through the door and into the warehouse. It was empty. "Damn!" Mike shouted when a phone began to ring.
Bring! Bring! Bring! Tom went to the small phone located conveniently next to crates. "Hello?" "Is this the L.A.P.D?" A sly voice said. "Who is this?" "Is this the L.A.P.D?" The voice repeated. "Yeah." "Let me talk to the man in charge of this operation." Tom stared at the phone with a bewildered look on his face and gave Mike the phone. "Yeah?" "By now you have realized that the warehouse you are in is a fake." He continued, "go to warehouse #346, that is all." (Click).
"Move out men, it's the Mystery Man again! Let's go!" Mike yelled. This was the 2nd time this guy had called them. His help led them to the capture of Joey Vitoni, the partner of Marceni Beladi, a major crime family who had been rising to power for the last ten years and was now the second largest crime family aside the Cartels. "It could be a trap Mike," Jack said. "Hey this guy got us Joey, I trust him by now."

They loaded up and the squad cars barreled down the dark and gloomy street. Mike was far off in his own thoughts and paid no attention to the hustle and bustle around him. Mike was thinking of his beautiful wife Ana, his fourteen-year-old son, Sam, and his seven-year-old daughter, Jessica, and his son who was on his college break, Greg. Greg was twenty years old and had already passed the 'I hate you.' stage. Mike had promised them that this would be his last raid. One more and he'd be done. He was thirty-eight and had been on the Narcotics Team for the past fourteen years.

He was jerked out of his thoughts when the squad cars screeched to a stop in front of a large, musty warehouse. Mike jumped out and they strapped on their padded bulletproof vests and each grabbed a rifle and a colt. "Everyone into positions!" He said into the radio. Bring! Bring! Mike picked up the phone and on came the Mystery Man. "I'm coming to meet you in a few minutes, see you soon." (Crack)
"Let's go!" They burst into the room and surrounded a few Italian workers. "You're under arrest!" Tom shouted, holding a gun to a man's back, "Get on the ground!" They hustled to the center and herded the criminals into a big circle. "Mike something's wrong, there has to be at least three more here." Jack said worriedly. "I know...you five!" Mike shouted pointing to five men. "Guard these slime balls!"
"Tom, Jack, come with me." They went to a large door that led to the connecting storage offices and entered. I looked around the office and its corners when a thud made them turn in the direction of a closed storage closet. "Tom." Tom kicked in the door and three men with pistols waited inside. "Huh... Tom gasped. The men fired. Tom fell back with three bullets in his chest. "Die!!" Jack shouted and they turned around the corner with their rifles and fired. The criminals screamed as they were riddled with bullets.
Blood was splattered all over the walls. Tom gasped and leaned back up, opening his shirt. "Good thing these are bulletproof." He looked down and saw 2 bullets in his vest and his side bleeding. "Oh crap." They grabbed Tom, lifted him up, and began to pull him out to find an ambulance.

Outside more squad cars began to arrive and Tom was rushed off to an ambulance before they could speak to him. A black pickup pulled up and a man dressed in dark gray stepped out. The man was tall and had the creepy air of an ex-con. "Mike Barnes?" He said. "Mystery Man I presume." "I'm afraid I don't have much time here." He spoke quickly and nervously as though something was wrong. "My real name is Alex Gestoni I am a former partner of Marceni. I can help the L.A.P.D. find him and take him down." "Well I'm retired Gestoni, if you need anything, Jack's the man to talk to." Mike said, turning around.
They started to walk to the cars when a black Ford Taurus pulled up with its windows down. "Get down!" The car screeched around and a couple of gun barrels poked out. The impact sent Gestoni flying as the car drove away. Mike ran up to Gestoni but it was no use, judging by the impact, he had been dead before he hit the ground. "Jeez! Jack yelled, turning to the car, "Come on! Mike jumped into the squad car and they took off after the hit men.

"Damn! We lost our only lead!" Jack said, hitting the steering wheel. "Just drive Jack." The car raced down the street after the Taurus. Turning, the car screeched around facing them. "Oh man I hate it when they do this." Jack groaned, putting the car into gear. The two cars raced toward each other down the empty road. "Um, Jack?" Mike said, looking at the hit man's car coming closer and closer. The two cars seemed to go into slow motion as they neared. Jack wrenched the wheel and the car spun to the side. "Do it Mike!" Mike drew his and Jack's colts and fired as the driver's side of the Taurus came by. The bullets bounced off the side as they drove.
"It's bulletproof!" The Taurus' back doors window went down and one of the hit men pulled out a gun. "Move Jack!" The hit man's gun went off just as Jack twirled the wheel. The car's side was riddled with bullet holes as it turned and hit the side of the Taurus. The Taurus twirled around as the squad car was flipped in the air. The Taurus drove on as Mike and Jack slowed to a stop. They sat for a few minutes upside down in their seats. "Mike?" "Yes Jack?" "I'm getting too old for this."
They climbed out of the car with nothing worse than a few bumps and bruises. "Mike I'll be looking forward to retirement." Jack said as they walked back down to the warehouse along the empty street. When they got there the cops were there but Tom had already been taken to the hospital. Mike walked up to one of the men, "Hey, how's the Tom doing?" "He's fine sir." The man said. "Good. Jack I think I'll need a lift home, since you messed up mine." "No problem." Jack said, and they slowly got in Jack's car and drove home.

Marceni Beladi sat in the middle of his large office and stared around at the sculptures of angels and awards. His large shoulders pressed against the cold leather of the seat. He picks up the report on his desk and neatly shuffles it together in a small pile on the surface of the oak desk. Everyone knew what Marceni looked like and did, as did the police, but with no evidence he could come and go as he pleased. Many knew him just by looking at his tan Italian skin, shiny bald head, and his cold black eyes.
A knock on the door is heard. "Come in," Marceni says in his deep voice. In walks Marceni's little weasel of a son and his personal advisor. "Leave me," Marceni says to his three tall and silent bodyguards. They nod as they leave. His son had oily skin and greasy hair with a face like a weasel. Marceni's short and fat advisor Frank, sat down and looked over the papers on the desk and said grimly. "I trust you've heard the news?" "Of course I have Frank," Marceni said with the calm anger he had in situations like this, "the whole drug front for the north side of L.A. was ruined." He paused before going on.
"We lost millions." "Father," his son interrupted, "At least we know who the snitch was and he's being taken care of as we speak, I'm sure that Santino and his boys will be back soon." Marceni turned to his son "Fredo, Fredo, Fredo, always looking on the brighter side of times," he laughed and his face contorted in anger, "NO! If there's one rat, then more will surface!" His youngest son shrank back and Frank sat and stared. The fire in his eyes was terrifying enough to frighten the devil himself.
The door was knocked on again and Marceni relaxed. "Enter. The door opened and his older son Santino entered with the two hit men at his side. "Father," he said kneeling down to kiss Marceni's hand, "It is done, Gestoni sleeps with the fishes." Santino stood up and motioned for the two hit men to leave. They nodded and left the office. Santino was, unlike his brother, suave and sophisticated, neatly dressed to match his sleek blond hair and tall physique. "Father we have a problem." "What is it?" "The hit was a success, but we ran into a snag. Two narcotics officers, the ones in charge of the operation, were meeting with the rat when we did the hit."
"We believe these were the men Gestoni was trying to meet with." He paused and continued, "We have no idea how much they heard." "This is a problem," Marceni said, "Do you know who they are? Did you get a good look at them?" "Yes father, they chased us before we escaped," Santino tossed down a case file, "Their names are Lt. Mike Barnes and Lt. Jack Trayson." "Well, well, well, you know what to do Santino." Marceni said smiling, "Everyone close to them to."
"When should it be done?" Santino asked. "As soon as possible." "Yes father our informant in the L.A.P.D. told me they'd both be at their family barbeque on Sunday." "Even better, I want you to take seven men with you." Marceni said and turned around to face the window, signaling that it was the end of the meeting. Santino left, followed by Fredo but Frank stayed behind a few moments staring at the back of the seat his boss was sitting in. Frank stood up, his knees screaming with cramps and left, closing the door to the office of the devil himself.

Mike sat at the front of the table and was helping Ana clean up the breakfast mess. "I can't believe you're retired already dad. Sam said eating his pancakes. "Chew with your mouth closed honey. Ana said smiling. "I thought you had to be really old to retire. Jessica said innocently, but with an emphasis on old. "It depends what job you have honey, I can't work being old and fat. Mike replied. Sam coughed into his milk laughing. "Mommy I'm full. Jessica said, dropping her fork. "Just a little more, one more bite. Ana said coming over to help Jessica. She finally gave up and put up the plates.
The doorbell rang and Mike went to answer it. "Oh hey Jack. He said and let him in. "So how's everyone-oof! He said and Jessica ran into him. He pretended to fall down and got back up. "Uncle Jack! Jessica shouted, hugging his stomach. "You're getting big, Jess! Jack said, laughing, "Soon you'll be as tall as me! They went back into the kitchen. "Hey Jack. Ana said, distracted. "Hey Jack! Sam said. "Hey Sam, now I know that we're getting presents for your dad but, what the heck. Jack gave Sam a small package.
"Hey thanks! Sam said, tearing off the rapping to reveal a PS2 game. "Wow! Final Fantasy X2! Can I go play it while we wait?! He asked turning to Mike. "Ok. Mike replied, reluctantly. Mike turned to Jack, shaking his head. "Thanks Jack. He said. "Now we aren't gonna see him for days. Jack shrugged, embarrassed. "You can make it up by helping me bring out the grill Jack. Mike replied and Jack went to the back of the house where the grill stood. Mike was trying to help him wheel it out when the doorbell began to ring. "I'll get it! Mike shouted and went to the kitchen.
Ding-Dong! "Oh that may be them. Ana said, straightening out Mike's shirt. "Honey I look fine. He said and wiggled away. Mike walked to the front of Jack's house and answered the door. "Hello? Tom stood in the doorway dressed in old work clothes. "Hey, glad you could make it! "No prob Mike," Tom said laughing, " Besides it's free food." "Come on in." Mike said. Tom walked in while Mike closed the door behind him. "So where is everyone? "Jack's getting the food and the others are going to be here soon.
"So how are ya?" Mike asked. "Oh I'm fine, the bullet wasn't very deep." They walked to the back of the house and got Jack. He was trying to get the grill out when he looked up. "Hey Tom nice to see you." They helped him roll the grill out when the doorbell rang again and they walked to the door. "Surprise!" Mike's family said. His Mom, Dad, his older brother Tim, and his son Greg had showed first and walked straight on in.
"Happy retirement," Mike's dad said hugging him. "So where's the food? "Max be quiet! Mike's mother said. "So how are the kids doing? Max, his brother asked. "They're fine. Mike replied. "Is Sam hating you yet? His dad asked. "Not yet. "Well don't worry, if they like ya, then ya got a problem. You're a good parent if they hate you. Max stared at his father blankly for a moment then spoke. "Well congratulations on all your success. He said and Mike and Greg laughed. Mike turned to Greg.
"Hey kid. Mike said. "Hey dad. How are ya? He asked. "Fine, come on, we can't deprive your mother of the chance to imply how thin you are. Mike said and they all went into the kitchen. "Hey mom. Greg said as they entered the kitchen. They began to chat up a storm when the bells began to ring and the barbeque began to begin. A young woman walked up and Greg took her to Mike. "Dad this is Lauren. He said. "Nice to meet you. She said, holding out a hand. Mike shook it and he nodded that he approved to his son. They went to the back and the party began.

They were eating and having a great time. "So," Mike's mom said, "It looks like I'll finally have a granddaughter." "Say where's Billy? Mike asked. "Oh he couldn't make it his friend is in the hospital. Billy was Mike younger brother. "Hey dad I think Jack's got something to say! Sam shouted. "Everyone! Everyone!" Jack shouted, stepping up on the table, "I'd like to propose a toast!" Everyone stopped to listen.
"Congratulations to you Mike," Jack spoke slowly and clearly, "To everything you have and of course what you and Ana are about to have," he continued, "I will always remember all the time we spent together and I'll be joining you in retirement in just two more weeks!" "And me in twelve years!" Tom shouted, he was twenty-six. "But really, it's been a blast! So toast to you, Ana, Sam, and your coming daughter!" "Toast!" Everyone shouted and they raised up their glasses.
Mike went in the back with Tom and Greg to get some steak. "So Tom, you better be careful when Jack and I are gone, ya won't have us to watch your back." "Ok, dad," Tom joked. Mike stood and watched Ana and Sam talking in the yard and smiled. "Tom," he said. "Yeah?" "When you get a wife and kids make sure you keep them safe, and always in your heart." "Heavy man, Heavy," Tom said pretending to wipe his eyes. "Oh forget it lets go," Mike said grabbing the packages of steak. "So how have you been Greg? Tom asked. "I've been fine. I'm doing good in school and I think you met Lauren? He replied. "Yeah I did, come on let's go.
As Mike walked down to the door he saw two black Taurus drive up. Time seemed to slow like a broken down movie reel. Eight men stepped out of the cars. One was Santino Beladi. "Can I help you gentlemen?" Mike's father asked. "No! Dad run!!" Mike shouted. "His father turned as the men in black pulled out guns and shot him dead. Mike's mom screamed as the men killed Mike's cousins and uncles. Santino pulled a gun out and shot her in the back. Mike, Tom, and Greg stood in the door way shocked and ran to the gun case, each grabbing two colts.

Jack was weeping over his dead wife when they opened the door. "Jack here!" Mike yelled tossing him a gun. "Tom take Ana, Jess and Sam. Get them out of here! " Dad I can help! "NO!" Mike shouted. Tom ran over to Ana and grabbed Sam then pulled them away to the back of the house. Mike flipped a table over and drew his colt. He dived over and fired hitting one of the men in the head. Jack was near a car firing at the man hiding behind it, the one who killed his wife. Jack walked toward the car shooting and pointed the gun at the man. (Click, click) The gun was empty. Jack grabbed his steak knife from his pocket and the man pulled his pistol out,. Jack was hit in the arm and leg and fell down, "Agh!!" He grabbed the knife as the man reloaded and threw it.
"Gluh..." The man slumped down grabbing at the knife in his throat. Blood poured from his neck as Jack limped over to the man and grabbed his now loaded gun. Jack fired a round into the man's head and then twirled around and shot another in the back. Then he slumped down to weak to stand with his back against the car. Greg held Jessica at his side and Lauren was behind him. "Greg! Get out of here! Now! Tim, Mike's older brother, shouted grabbing a gun from the ground. "But- "NOW! Tim shouted and opened the car doors. Greg jumped in with Jessica in the back seat. Tim Was helping Lauren in when a bullet hit him in the leg. "Agh! He shouted tripping. Lauren turned to help him. "NO! Get out of here! He shouted. Lauren closed the door and the car sped off down the street. Tim turned and went back onto the lawn.
Tim moved to a Taurus and pulled the man out who was starting to try and chase
his nephew. "Get out. He said and he began to drag out the man. "COME ON- He
stopped and heard another bullet fire. He fell back to the ground holding his chest and
raised his gun as the other man did. The guns went off at once. Tim was dead and so was
the hit man. Mike saw a man running toward Ana, Tom, and Sam and he shot him dead
then ran to Ana. Tom was helping Ana along when Santino jumped out from behind a gate
and knocked him out cold with a blow to the head. Santino smiled as he raised the gun
and looked at Ana. "My father sends his regards."
Mike watched Tom get knocked out and saw Santino next to Ana with a gun raised. Blam! He saw his wife of twelve years fall. "NO!!!" He ran to Ana and knew she was dead. "No, no, please god no, oh god Ana..." "MOM!! came Sam's and Jessica's
screams from a few feet away. He sat crying and looked toward Santino. The bastard was smiling, with a gun raised at him. "You son of a bitch!!" He shouted, lunging at Santino. Blam! Mike felt a bullet hit his chest but he kept moving and grabbed Santino by the neck with one hand, and wrenching the gun out of his hand with the other.
He stood holding the gun to Santino's head and started to pull the trigger. "I wouldn't do that," Santino said laughing, "Look," Mike looked at where Santino pointed and saw a hit man holding Sam and Jessica. "Let him go!!" Mike shouted. "Trade..." Santino said struggling. Mike released Santino and the hit man released Sam. "Come here Sam," Mike said crying. Sam started to run to Mike when Santino grabbed him and put a gun to Sam's back. "No!!" Mike shouted. "I think he'll be a great servant for my father." Santino laughed. "Let go of me you punk! Sam shouted, struggling.
The hit men walked up to the car and got in Mike watched helpless as Santino walked to the car door with his son. "Let me have him Santino." Mike said desperately and weakly from the loss of blood. "Dad! "Sorry but I'll make sure this hits the front page and I'll let him come to you and your wife's funeral." He said, holding the crying Sam. "My Regards." He pushed Sam in the car and raised his gun. "Ana, Sam..." Mike whispered, Blam! Mike fell back as another bullet hit his chest. "DAD!! He stared up at blackness and heard only the screams of his son and the screech of the cars tires as he blacked out...

3.
"ANA!!!!" Mike jolted awake and reached for a gun, but nothing was there. He opened his eyes and saw that he was in a large five-bed hospital room. He sat up and looked around, then fell back quickly with a pain in his chest. He looked at his chest and saw two surgical scars, from removing the bullets, he thought. He looked next to him and saw that Jack was asleep next to him with his arm heavily bandaged and Tom asleep in the little waiting chair with a big bandage wrapped across his head.
"Guys!" Mike shouted and Jack and Tom woke up. "Where's that son of a bitch Santino?!" Tom shouted, standing up. "Where's everyone?" Mike sat back and began to weep. "Oh...Mike...I'm sorry." "I don't need your sympathy!" Mike shouted ripping the I.V.s out of his arms, "I'm getting out of here!" Mike stepped on to the ground and his legs immediately gave away. "Agh!" Tom got up and picked him up. The door opened and a doctor walked in. "What's going on here?"

"Mr. Barnes I know you're upset but you can't leave yet." Doctor Schwartz said with a nurse and another doctor helping Mike into his bed. "Upset? UPSET?!?!" Mike jumped up and grabbed the doctor by the throat. "My whole family is Dead!! MY SON IS WITH SANTINO AND MARCENI BELADI!!" The doctor and nurse rushed up and pulled Mike away. "I'm going to give you something to relax," Schwartz said, injecting a syringe full of medicine into Mike's arm. "LET ME Out of here! Now 1et me ou...." Mike fell back into a dream of mixed nightmares and morphine.
He kept seeing his family dying and Ana and Sam fading deeper as he ran to catch them and into a dead end. Then the smiling face of Santino Beladi appears on the wall. Mike opened his eyes and this time the doctor were in the room, checking on them all. The nurse smiled at him and spoke, "I know what happened to you I'm so sorry." "Don't try to comfort me...just do your job and get me out of here..." The nurse worked on his I.V.s and began to leave, "Wait..." "Yes?" "How long till I get out of here?" "Two weeks," she said and left, closing the door behind her.

The days passed in a flash over the first week, Mike had begun to walk again and was almost healed. "Jack, Tom." "Yeah?" "What?" Mike paused hesitating. "After we get out I'm going to the funerals and then I'm going after Marceni." "Mike that's suicide," Jack said. "I have nothing to live for but Sam and Jess. He is all I have left and no one will stop me." Mike paused and looked at them, "are you with me guys? If not then fine, but stay out of my way or I will kill you both."
"Mike he killed my wife." Jack said. "Ana was like a sister to me." Tom said. "Of course we're with you." "Good, Tom By now they know we're alive and that we'll be here for a while. They'll try to make a hit, you're checked and can leave so go to you're house and get some weapons." "No problem." Tom opened the door and left, leaving Jack and Mike behind in the hospital room. Outside Tom stepped out into the sun and left toward his car that was parked in a driveway. Getting inside he turned on the ignition and drove out down the busy road back to his house.
Tom parked in his driveway and walked into his house. He looked at an old case and smashed the glass taking out his father's old gun. Then he opened his emergency case and took out a medical kit and three colts along with a pack with plenty of ammo. As he drove down the road he hit a red light and turned on the radio flipping through a station to find a tune to lighten the mood. (Click) The day the music died, and they were singin' Bye, Bye, Mrs. American Pie.. (Click) Highway to Hell! Highway to Hell! (Click) (The Godfather music) "Ugh," Tom groaned and switched off the radio.
As he waited he looked at the cars turning into the lane toward the hospital, White Lincoln, Yellow Volkswagen, Red Corvette, Black Taurus, "Oh no," Tom said as he watched the car speed toward the hospital. He loaded his father's gun and when the light turned he speed off like a demon toward the black Taurus.

Doctor Schwartz sat with the guard at the sixth floor's entryway and took his time thinking of his next move in the chess game. He moved his queen and took the guards knight then the guard moved his pawn forward and Schwartz moved his bishop three diagonally to the right...and... "Checkmate!" Schwartz yelled in triumph. "Aww," the guard groaned. "Come on Bill, pay up." "Fine," Bill said tossing down a twenty, "Just don't start a victory dance...can I help you?"
Bill turned to two tall men in black who had walked up. "Yes I'm here to visit Mike Barnes, Tom Broker, and Jack Trayson." "They're in room 678, shall I show you?" Schwartz asked standing up. "No we'll find it ourselves," The man said as his he pulled out his gun and shot Bill in the chest."What the?!" Schwartz screamed as the man turned to him and raised his gun. "Don't!" Bits of brain and skull hit the wall as the hit man pulled the trigger. "Stay here, and watch for anyone coming down." The hit man said to his partner. "If anyone comes up, kill them. The man walked down the hallway to room 678.

Tom jumped out of the car and ran to the entrance of the hospital and pressed the elevator button then ran up the stairs. Up in the sixth floor the hit man neared closer to room 678. He counted the numbers his head as he passed each door. 658...660...The hit man at the front heard a bell ring and the elevator opened...662...664...666...the man took his gun and walked to the elevator, and fired as he ran past, 668...No one there, the hit man said out loud...670...672...Tom burst through the stairway and dived in the air with his father's gun and fired....674...the hit man slumped to the floor dead...676...678...Tom began to run down the hall as the hit man opened the door.

The door creaked open and the hit man looked down at Mike in his bed helpless. He raised the gun and...wait where's the other two? "Agh!! Jack lunged from behind the door and looped a I.V. cord around the hit man's neck choking off his air. "Ghh...Ghh... The hit man gasped for breath and began hitting Jack on his healing wounds. "Oww! Oww!! The hit man twisted to the side and the cord snapped, causing the hit man's mask to come off and sending Jack flying into the bed next to Mike. Fredo Beladi stood up and pulled out another gun pointing it at Jack, "You die first. A gunshot rang out.
Fredo smiled still holding the gun and fell forward on his face his back bleeding. Tom stood in the door way holding his father's gun. Fredo laid the trying to reach the gun but Jack kicked it away. Fredo turned over and faced Tom and Jack. "Ha Ha Ha, he began laughing insanely, "Oh just wait till my father hears about this... he'll come after you with everything he's got and It'll be a slow and painful death for all of you. He laughed again and turned to Mike, "Especially for your little kiddies...Ha Ha Ha.
Mike leaped out of bed and grabbed the gun Jack kicked away, "You little weasel!! He shouted holding the gun to Fredo's head. "Where are my children?! Fredo coughed out blood and said, "Oh he's still okay but wait until Santino finds out I'm dead, Ha Ha Ha!!! Fredo fell back with another bullet in him. Mike stood up and looked at them with cold eyes and blood on his face and clothes. "This time it's personal...

4.
"Mike are you sure you want to do this? Jack asked, buttoning up his black funeral clothes. "Yes, now that Fredo is dead than Marceni will come at us and not stop until we're dead. Mike answered. It had been two weeks since Fredo had died and the papers still hadn't reported it. Most likely Marceni wanted it kept quiet so he could peacefully bury his son and take care of them with no possible connections.
Greg had taken Jessica and Lauren and found a small house to stay in. Greg had wanted to join but Mike wouldn't let him. 'If I die you have to take care of the family.' Mike had told him and in the end he had finally agreed. They had to be very careful now. All calls that came in had to be short and they couldn't raise any suspicions if they came over or called too many times. Jack had worked it out and had gotten a man to stay with them to protect his family. "You sure he's okay? Mike had asked. "Well he had better be he's my cousin. And that had settled that little problem.
The telephone rang and Mike answered it. "Hello? "Hey Daddy! Jessica's voice came through and it filled Mike with warmth. "Hey sweetie. How are you? He asked. "I'm fine. "Great is it okay if I talk to Greg? Mike asked. "Ok. There was a few seconds of silence and then Greg answered. "Hey dad. "Hey kid. How you holding up? "We're fine, we're coming to visit mom's grave after you guys leave. Greg replied. "Oh okay, I'm sorry for what has happened son. "Dad don't, make Marceni be the one who's sorry, not you. Greg replied. "We gotta go dad Nick said that he'll be here around the clock. Nick was Jack's cousin. "Great kid, goodbye. "See ya. Mike hung up.
Come on, They exited their safe house. They'd gotten a good deal from a seemingly crooked real estate company and bought the large and old house. Knowing it wouldn't be safe they rarely went back home or traveled alone. They walked to the blue Mercedes and got into the car. Mike drove this time with Jack and Tom in the back. Mike drove for a few minutes and stopped at the small cemetery.

Mike sat silent with his friends behind him and a few officers from the force and his only other surviving relative, his brother Billy. Everyone stood with shallow and grim faces. Only Bill, Mike, Tom, and Jack showed any emotion. 'What did they know?' thought Mike, 'They still had a wife or husband and a family left to go back to. For them it was just another bad day.' The preacher was almost done and began to sing. "Amazing grace, how sweet, the sun, that saved a retch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found. Was blind but now I see...
By the time he finished the song almost everyone had joined in. As Mike sang he felt hot tears running down his face and Bill put his arm around him trying to comfort him while crying all the same. "May god accept them into his arms and open the gates of heaven to them. The preacher said finished. "Amen. Everyone said. As the people began to leave they said silent goodbyes. Mike walked up to Ana's grave and fell to his knees.
"Ana, wherever you are I love you, he said choking on tears and his voice became more steady, "Ana, I swear I will get Sam back even if I have to go through the entire Beladi family to do so. He stopped holding his head in his hands. "I miss you so much, I know that the only thing keeping me from taking my life to join you is our children, he said, "I promise I will find him and raise them well, goodbye Ana. "See you old girl, Jack said not bothering to stop his accent from taking over completely.
"I'm ready, Mike said standing up. "Mike, Billy said. "Yes? Billy looked at his mother and father's graves, "I want to help you. "No Bill, Mike said, "It's too dangerous. "Mike, you and your kids are the only family I've got left, I am going to help find your son. Mike looked in Billy's eyes and knew he couldn't stop him. "Ok, but we're going to need more men, at least two more so we'll g...
Mike stopped in the middle of his sentence and looked at the small crowd of people at another grave. "Marceni, he said turning to the group and walking over to them. Billy and Tom came over and grabbed him by the arms. "I know, he said pulling away from them. "I'll wait. The small group sat for a few minutes and began walking back to their cars. Mike walked quickly up to them. "Hey Marceni! he shouted, causing the group to turn.
Marceni's eyes widened and he walked up toward Mike. The three bodyguards grabbed started to come but he pushed them away. "No. Just Santino and I. They nodded and left with the rest. "So...Mr. Barnes, I do believe you've met my son Santino. "And I don't believe you've met my brother Billy, the only one you didn't kill. Mike replied coldly. "So where is you're little boy, Marceni said turning to Santino, "Sammy right? Santino nodded. "Yes Sammy, you've not lost him have you? "Indeed, Mike replied with his teeth clenched. "And where's yours? Fredo I believe, not lost is he?
Marceni and Santino's snide smiles faded. "Indeed, Marceni replied. "Now lets get down to business, I have your son, and you are both still alive. Marceni said coldly. "I hoped we could put this all behind us but no, Marceni said when Mike interrupted, "I figured that with Fredo dead we're even now I want my son. Marceni lost his temper at the last remark, "I will never let you have your son or daughter and if this wasn't such a public place you'd all be dead now.
"But since I'm a sporting man I'll make you a little deal, Marceni laughed, then turned stern again, "you have one week to make your little band of friends, no attacks will be issued until then. "Sounds fair to me, Mike said. "Good, now when the week is up I'll go after you in the worse way. Marceni said, "When it's your time to die you'll never know where it'll be. "Now I've got a schedule to keep, good day to you all.

After the funeral they took Billy and went to the safe house. "Now Marceni is a man of his word and he'll keep his word. Jack said. "We can't involve the L.A.P.D so we'll just find a few more trustworthy men. "How many? Tom said leaning on a small wooden chair. "I'd say two or three more, Mike said, "Three to play it safe. "Okay now that we've got that settled we'll need weapons and supplies. Jack said, turning to Billy and Tom, "You two got to our houses and collect what you can find, then get some food, about two weeks worth okay?
Jack tossed Tom the keys. "Sure no problem," Tom said and walked out the door with Billy behind him. Jack and Mike waited until they heard the engine fire up and the car drove away. "Now Jack, Mike said, "The best place to look for men would be at a the recruiting facility of the department. "Yeah that way they won't have been reached by Marceni yet. "Mike Picked up his gun and put it in his holster while Jack did the same and they left the safe house, off to go get some faithful men.

5.
Mike and Jack had been in the recruiting office for a year before they were truly classified as officers so they knew the layout and most of the people there very well. First they needed permission from the big man. So they went to the chief of police. They needed to be back on the force, allowed a private license for going after Marceni with seven men, and, of course, three more men crazy enough to do it.
They entered the office of the chief of police. The chief was a short but burly man with almost no gray hair left except along the edge. His office was rather small, all along the walls sat small awards. His desk was smooth and everything on it was organized neatly, from the pencils to his five mugs that sat around the desk. "Mike come and sit, he said, "Would you like some coffee? He asked. "No thanks I'm fine, Jack said. "I'd like some, Mike replied looking at the small file that lay on the desk. The chief slammed his hand down and pulled it away.
The chief went to the small coffee filter behind his desk and pressed a button so that coffee poured from it. "Sugar? Cream? "Both please. Mike replied. The chief sat down and handed Mike the coffee. "Thanks. "I'm sorry about what happened. "Oh cut the crap Calvin. We know damn well that you never liked me or Jack. Mike snapped. "Ah, still the old fiery little kid I knew thirteen years ago, he said, lighting a cigar. "Now what can I do for you? "We're going after Marceni. Mike replied, smiling at Calvin's reaction. The cigar dropped from John's mouth and he stared at them.
"You're serious aren't you? "Always have, always will be Calvin, Jack said. Calvin laughed and got up. He started pacing his office back and forth. "Well you'll need men. "Got four already Calvin, just need three from you. Mike replied, "Oh and a permit. "Well normally I'd say you're an insane lunatic that wants to die and I still do, Calvin said pulling out a permit, "but in a case like this I'll make an exception. "Now the three men you get have to be willing and with no prior experience. Calvin said. "That's why we came to the recruiting office. Mike said standing up. Jack and Mike shook hands with Calvin and left the office.

"So now we go see our choice candidates, Jack said walking down the hall to the training rooms. Once inside old memories came back and they remembered when they were fresh rookies and look at them now. A group of recruits were around the shooting range and next door was the lifting and physical workout areas. "Excuse me may I help you? The training instructor asked them as they walked in. "Yeah were here on the chief's permission, Mike said, "we're organizing a special investigation and the dangerous apprehension of Marceni Beladi.
The instructor looked shocked and repeated, "Marceni Beladi? "Oh and the rest of his operations. Mike added cheerfully. "Well, I'll see what I can do. "One more thing. Mike said. The instructor turned and faced him, "Whoever you find make sure they don't have much family. The Instructor walked off rather shocked and went into the next room after visiting the gun course. While they waited they noticed a small group of about eight people grouped around a single target box. "Let's see what all the excitements about, Mike said as they walked to the gun course. They walked up and squeezed to the front of the group.
At the front was a suave little kid with a slick smile and a kind of stuck-up air around him. He was young, about twenty-five, and about Mike's height. They could tell right away he was Italian by his look and skin. "Hey old men, watch this, he said smiling at them. "He clicked a button and a target popped up about eighty feet away. "Why do they make it so easy? He said to himself, pulling out a handgun. "Good luck kid, Jack said smirking. There was no way he could do well that far away.
Pow! Pow! He fired six more and reloaded the gun. Putting the gun down he clicked the button, causing the target to come back. When it stopped everyone stared. on the head of the target was shot as a smiley face. "have a nice day gentleman, he said walking away to the other room. As they looked around waiting the young man came out again and walked to them. "So you two are going after Marceni? Ha! he said.
"Shut it kid, Jack said. "What's your name? "Alex Brown "Ah really? Jack said. "I mean what's your real name? Before you changed it? The young kid stared at Jack for a second, "Gary Vitoni, he said. "Joey Vitoni's son huh? Jack said, "What's the matter? Too ashamed to keep your father's name? He turned to Mike his back to the kid, "That's all we'll need just one weak link in the chain. "What's that supposed to mean?
Jack turned to the kid. "I said you're a no good member of a dying race. The kid pushed Jack back and he grabbed for his nightstick. The kid had a gun to Jack's head before he even got the baton raised. "It's better than you ya freakin' British pig, he said calmly. "Oh I like him, Jack said turning his head toward Mike. "You're in Mr. Brown or should I call you Alex? Mike asked. "Alex will do. The kid said smiling.

Alex went back to the gun course while another kid came up. The kid was smaller than Alex with deep read hair and blue eyes. He looked like a kid who was oblivious to the horrors of the world around him. Mike and Jack had doubts about the kid on their first glance. "Ok, well kid, you're not what I expected. "I'm used to that. "Who are you? Mike asked stepping forward. "My name is John Barone. "And why are you here? "To serve and protect the rights of... "Why you really here?
John's eyes flashed and he took them to the corner of the room. "My father used to work undercover and worked on a case of Beladi's. John said. "He was found out when Beladi's smuggling ring was shut down. So naturally Beladi sent men to find us and our family. Mike glanced at Jack and their eyes met. "Like you, I lost my family to Beladi. That's why I joined the force. "I see, son who of your family is still alive?
John looked puzzled, "My sister is all I have left. "Ok make sure she gets as far away as she can from L.A. Mike said. "I don't want him to be able to track anyone's families down. "So I'm in? "Yes you're in John. John went back and started to talk to Alex at the firing range. "So I guess we need one more? Mike asked. "Yeah and that will make seven, Jack said, "A lucky number. "We'll need all the luck we can get Jack. Mike said.

The last door opened and a strong large man came out. He had a large chest and a baldhead with a black beard. Jack and Mike looked at each other with raised eyebrows. The man walked over and sat down. "Hello. Mike said, "What might your name be? The large man spoke quickly. "I am James Vance, unfortunately no other recruits wished to join. James said, "So when I heard the facts of the assignment I wished to join immediately.
"And why is that? Jack asked. "Just what do you do here. "Oh I'm terribly sorry I forgot my manners, James said, "I work as a trainer for the recruits and once worked on the case of Beladi but I was moved to here. "So you think you can just come up here and we'll let you join? Jack asked. "James shuffled around nervously in his seat and said, "Well...yes actually. Jack stared at James sternly. "Well ok, he said and shook James' hand. "Welcome to the gang.
"Now go get your weapons and supplies James. Mike said, turning to Alex and John, "You two get ready, we're going. Alex and John walked to the rooms and in a few minutes came out with James right behind them. "Lets go, Mike said and they each signed out and received permission from the chief. Opening the door they felt as if they were each starting out a first step in a deadly and perilous journey.

6.
Tom and Billy drove down the road on their way to the supply stores. "So Tom it's nice to see you again, Billy said shuffling, nervously against the seat. "Yeah you to Billy, Tom said turning down Parker St, "Can I ask you something? "Shoot. "Why were you gone at Mike's party? You know... Billy looked around as though anxious, "My friend recently passed away of lung cancer, he'd had it for a year. "Oh I'm sorry, Tom said, ashamed of any suspicions he had.

They drove into the supermarket parking lot and got out of the cars, "Wait a minute, Tom said lighting a cigarette. Billy looked at him curiously, "I thought you didn't smoke. "Heck I don't but, there isn't much of a point to clean living anymore. Billy chuckled, shaking his head as they passed into the supermarket. About two hours later they left with five carts of supplies.

"Whoa, glad that's over, Tom said wiping his head after they unpacked the food and went into the house. Mike and the others weren't back yet. An hour later three cars pulled up and Mike and the others got out. "Wow, odd catch, Tom said looking at the bunch of recruits. "Everyone this is my brother Billy and Tom. "Tom, Billy this is Alex Stone. "Hey... Alex said preoccupied with his new home. "James Vance. "Pleasure, James said shaking their hands. "And John Barone. "Hi, John said sitting down.
"Now before you guys get comfortable, Mike said, making Billy groan. "Anyway, I'm sure we all know why we're here, to hunt down one man, Marceni Beladi. Everyone took a seat as Mike went on. "I'm sure this'll be dangerous, and unfortunately almost a suicide mission, Mike said. "Cheers mate, Jack answered back. "Also we'll be safe until the end of the week, now Marceni has no idea where we live and I want to keep it that way.
"Now that we've got that out of the way, I think we'd better prepare for the worse. Mike finished sitting down. "Now whatever happens will happen. Jack got up and opened the fridge throwing each of them a beer, "Drink up boys, it could be your last. As they drank Mike sat silent for a while. "James, He said. "You got family? "Not anymore, my ex-wife took my little boy in the divorce. "Aww man, I'm sorry. "Hey man don't be I can still see him on the weekends. "Well I'm of to bed guys see ya. Mike said exiting toward the bedroom.

Mike strolled across his house looking at the barbeque, his family came over to see him and he invited them in. When he opened the door Sam came running in to meet him. Sam jumped up into his father's arms and he picked him up. Ana came from the back of the living room. "Honey I'm soo gladdd yourrr homeee.... she slowed down as she walked to him and the room darkened. The walls became black and a dark red liquid Mike knew was blood leaked from them.
Mike put Sam down who ran to Ana. He looked around and his family was gone, replaced by eight men in black. The one in front looked up and Fredo Beladi and Santino Beladi stood smiling. He looked back and Ana was still smiling. "What's wrong honey, don't be rude to our guests. She smiled and Mike looked back shocked. A red line of blood leaked from the middle of her head and she fell back. Mike ran to grab her but she faded as his arms reached her. "NO!! Mike heard himself yell and he turned to see Sam along side with the Beladi's.
"Thanks for letting them take me dad... He said quietly. "No, come back. "You're not fit to be a father. Santino added. The men behind him began fading away and Mike lunged to try and get Sam, but he was to slow. Sam was gone before he reached the other end of the room. He stood there alone as the furniture and features of the room faded till only a dark, empty room remained. Blood continued to leak until it reached his waste and then his neck. Mike gasped for air as the blood flowed over him. He opened his eyes and saw Marceni's smiling face as blackness consumed him.

Mike leapt up at of bed gasping and drenched in sweat. "It was only a dream, he told himself. "Just a dream, he thought as he changed into a fresh shirt and pulled back the bed's blankets. "Tomorrow will be a hard day's work, he thought. He would need all the strength he could get. He turned off the lights and laid back into the pillow still thinking of the nightmare. "I'll get you back Sam, he said and rolled over, falling into a deep, dreamless sleep.
7.
Maceni stood up, gazing out from the balcony of his fine mansion. He looked down upon the large hedge mazes and operations. Below his workers loaded crates up onto his large personal trucks. Down at the dock his advisor Frank was making notes and taking inventory of the operations. He checked off at the little clipboard he had and walked farther up the dock, finally taking a left turn and disappeared behind one of the boats as he boarded it.
He swept back, with his silent bodyguards behind him, and began descending down the stairs. Marceni walked until he reached a large tall set of Spanish Oak carved doors. They had a magnificent golden trim and were decorated at the knob with rubies. He opened the doors and entered his main meeting room. A large table with twenty doors led from one end to the other. As he sat down the three guards positioned themselves so two were on either side of the door and one remained at his side.
He pressed a small button and moments later servants filled the room. Marceni laid back in his chair while chefs began preparing his food in the adjacent room. A barber began to apply shaving cream to his face when the doors burst open. Two burly Irish men came in holding a cowering little man with a camera around his neck. "We caught him sneaking around in the hedges sir. The man on the left said. "We don't know how much he saw. The other said.
The man shaving Marceni with an old-fashioned razor stopped as Marceni wheeled around to face them. "Well? he said, staring at the cowering man. "I..I..I was just trying to get an interview with you for my story... He whimpered, his face reddening. Marceni stared at the man. The man had a blue jean jacket and black pants, his black hair gleaming against his reddened eyes and face. "Why didn't you ask then? Marceni asked. "I knew they wouldn't let me in, they'd say they'd speak to you but just ignore me.
A man dressed all in white came through the doorway and nodded to Marceni. Marceni turned to the two burly men as he stood up, wiping away the shaving cream. "Now, now, he said in a kind voice, facing the men, "my associates must be handled kindly and in a business-like way. He turned to the man in white who had just entered. "Let us show our new friend how we do business, he said and his smile vanished, leaving a cold stare. He shook his head in the direction of the reporter. The man pulled out two small pistols and pointed them at the cowering man.
"NO WAIT!! he screamed as the man in white's guns went off in a blaze. He screamed as the bullets blew out both his kneecaps with perfect precision . Marceni stared at the crying man whose knees were dripping blood onto the carpet. "Throw him to the dogs, he said coldly. "No!! Please don't!!! NO!!! The man screamed, struggling, as the two Irishmen dragged him away leaving a trail of blood behind. Marceni smiled as the man's shrieks of terror and pain died away.
He turned to the man in white. "Let us find a more private place, he said, waving for the man to follow. He turned to the butlers and maids. "Clean this mess up. He said and walked down the hallway with the man in white and his three bodyguards behind him. They reached the front doorway and opened it. Farther away they could hear screams, but then a loud series of barks overtook the shrieks. The group turned away from the operations and went into the courtyard. Once deep inside the maze and away from the noise of all the operations they halted. "Leave us. Marceni said, and the three bodyguards went away toward the exit.
Once the echoes of the bodyguards footsteps had died away Marceni spoke to the man in white. "I trust your trip was comfortable? he asked. The man turned to Marceni, he was dressed in a deep white. He had an expensive white suit and white 50's business style hat. His 'crooked business' features stood out upon his high-in-rank air. His suave face smiled back underneath a tangle of black hair. "Oh yes, quite more than usual, this must be a important or personal issue, he replied in a deceptive and semi, snake like voice, "What is your wish my friend?
Although below Maceni, the two of them spoke in friendly ways. "I'm sure you heard that my son was killed not to long ago. Marceni said. "Ah yes, I'm terribly sorry I couldn't attend the funeral, but I was busy on your last assignment for me. The man replied. "It's quite alright, but I have another assignment for you. "Yes? The man said, his interest showing. "These are the names of murderers of my son and his accomplices , I want you to take care of them for me. Marceni said, handing him a small envelope. "Of course Marceni, the man said, slipping the envelope in his pocket, "It will be done.
The two of them shook hands and Marceni turned away in the direction his bodyguards took while the man in white took the other path. The man exited the maze and walked to the garage where a specially stocked supply of cars stood. Out of the red Dodge pickup, the white Viper, and the blue and black Nissans, he chose the white Viper to match his suit. He opened the trunk and checked that he had all the weapons he'd need for the assignment.
As he checked the weapons he looked at the trunk's dimensions. "Plenty of trunk space. He thought smiling. "Perfect. He closed the trunk and took the keys from the men in the small tow booth. He checked to see that the men weren't watching and looked down at the first name on the list. "Billy Barnes, he read out loud and sealed the envelope back up, placing it in his pocket. Now all he'd have to do was find out where they were staying, which wouldn't be hard.

The men stood behind the gate as the man in white checked inside the trunk of the car and closed it down. "Hey Rick, one of the men said as the man opened an letter. "Yeah? the other man said. "Any idea who that guy who just drove off was? "Beats me, umm let me check, Rick said looking down, scanning a list with his finger. "Oh here it is, says the name is a Frank Adam Nitti.
Frank Nitti? The other man said, making a face of concentration, "Never heard of him. "Oh well lets go eat. Rick said and they opened the gate for the man. "What you got? "Ham sandwich. "Oh, I'll trade ya for this sub sand witch, Martha knows I hate theses things... Their conversation faded away as Nitti drove out of the garage and down the road into the small woodland that was near Marceni's house.

8.
Mike and the others woke early that morning, knowing what was coming, but not knowing exactly what it was. Billy jumped out of bed and looked around. Everyone was gone, he must have overslept. He entered the kitchen and saw Jack, Tom, Mike, and Alex eating breakfast. "Good morning guys, he said cheerfully. "Ugh, grunted Jack in reply fixing his coffee. "Mornin,' Mike and Tom said. Like Jack Alex wasn't enthusiastic. "Do I have to reply to that? He asked, staring at the table. Alex looked ragged and worn, he had shadows under his eyes. He had obviously not slept all night.
Mike picked up the phione and dialed the number to Greg's. "Hello? Nick had answered. "Hey Nick it's me Mike. "Oh hey. The others aren't up yet. You need to leave a message? Nick asked. "Just tell them I love them and that we're beginning the investigation today. Mike replied. "Will do. Bye. Nicak said. "Bye. Mike hung up. Tom stuffed a piece of toast in his mouth while he tried to get his coat on. "Mmph mmgh. He said with his mouth full. Billy stared at him blankly. "I have to go help John and James. he said taking the toast out of his mouth. He walked out as Mike followed suit, "Later. Mike said closing the door.
Billy stared at the door for a few minutes and then sat down at the same table as Alex. Billy sat a moment looking as though he was waiting for an explanation. After no comment from either Jack or Alex he spoke up. "So why'd they go? To his surprise Alex answered. "It's Sunday remember, James gets to see his kid.' he said, "And we can't travel alone. Jack spoke as he put the plates down, "James figures this may be the last time he gets to speak to his kid in a while, so he plans to tell his ex why he won't be visiting.
"Oh, so what are we gonna do? Billy asked stabbing at an egg with his fork. "I figure we should get to know the area and do some research on Marceni's background and his operations. Jack said, "You know get some info on who we've got coming after us. Alex spoke after finishing his coffee, "Turn on the TV Billy, let's see what's happening in the outside world. Billy got up and walked over to the old model TV. After whipping some dust off the top of it he clicked it on. At first the whole picture was snowy, but after a few good whacks in the side it went back to normal.
Billy turned to channel four and tuned up the volume. "And today's top story, the local reporter Jim Jones' body was found in the Marietta Bay today. A female new anchor said. "Let's go to our field reporter Melissa Bradick who has the full story. The screen flashed and changed to a shot of a scrawny looking news reporter. "Jim Jones had been missing for the past five days when after he left to take on a 'Top Story'. However, during the hour he was supposed to clock out for work he was missed. After a day his wife called in a missing report. Police currently have no leads on the subject but suspect that he was attacked by a pack of wild dogs as many large teeth marks were found on his body. The medical inspection is yet to be taken but police will have began that analysis as soon as the area is sealed off, back to you Janice (click).
Billy switched off the TV, "I hate the news, he muttered. "No. No. Turn it back on, Alex said, putting down his fork. "Alright fine, Billy said flicking it back on. "His co-workers say he was last working on a story involving Marceni Beladi, a major suspected drug and crime kingpin. Alex dropped his fork and looked at Jack. "We'll have more on that story later. Jack, Billy, and Alex sat in silence for a few seconds. "Let's go, Alex said and the chairs scraped against the floor as they stood up. Jack dumped the plates into the sink as Alex and Billy grabbed their coats. Jack pulled on his coat and closed the door, locking it.

Mike and the others drove down the road to 14 Maple Dr. where James son and ex lived. "So James, mind if I ask how you came to be divorced? John said, with his head out of the window. "Sure, it's...hey get your head out of the window! James said laughing. John rolled the window back up as James continued. "My wife was tired of me coming home late, I gave to much attention to my work and not to my family. He said. "I guess I should have cared for them more. "Oh sorry man.
Mike hadn't spoken once since they'd pulled out of the drive but Tom knew why, he was still heart broken at his loss and seeing another family would make it worse. They drove up to a small house with blue flowers decorating the sides. It was a small but fancy one-story house with red and light blue paint and a small porch swing on the front lawn. A little boy of about Sam's age was sitting on the swing. When James stepped out of the car the little boy leaped off the swing and ran toward the car yelling, "Mommy, mommy, daddy's here!
Seeing the little child run into James arms made Mike's heartache and he felt a wave of jealousy toward James for his happiness, but it soon passed leaving a shallow emptiness in the pit of his stomach. The blue painted front door opened and a woman of about thirty-nine stepped out onto the porch. She had shiny black hair and a slightly tanned face. She was wearing a long flowered dress and a small sun hat. "Oh hi James, you just caught me doing a little garden work. She said blowing some hair out of her eyes and glancing down at the dress.
"So who are your friends? She asked, wiping some soil off her hands. "Oh, James said being awakened from a small trance, "This is John Barone, a new recruit, Tom Broker and his partner Mike Barnes. Each of them shook hands and she said, "Pleasure to meet you, I'm Alice...and, she stopped once she had shaken hands with Mike. She kept holding onto his hand as she stared at him clearly thinking. "It is you...you're the cop who...oh I'm sorry for what happened to you. Mike stared back at her, "Well I'm glad I'm a celebrity now. He said and changed his opinion when he saw the concern in her eyes, "It's quite all right.
James interrupted the awkward silence, "Umm guys, could you give me a few moments privacy with Alice? "Sure no problem," Tom said and the three of them walked over to the car. "Alice, James said. "Yes? "I'm afraid I won't be seeing you for a few weeks or even months. "Why what's happened? she asked changing to a concerned appearance in a second. "Mike and his friend Tom have organized a special task force to apprehend Marceni Beladi. Alice's face changed to horror at the mention of this name. "Marceni?! she shrieked. "Are you insane?! Do you know how powerful he is what if,
She would have gone on further if James hadn't put his finger to her lip to stop her. "Hush Alice, what would you do if you lost me and Todd? Her eyes filled with tears. "You're right, I've been so silly, he needs all the help he can get. She said, wiping her eyes, "You do what you have to, tell Todd. James kneeled down by his son and spoke gently to him, "Todd. "Yes. "I'm going to be gone for a while and I don't know how long. he said, "I want you to keep an eye on your mother for me. "Yes daddy. Todd said smiling.
"Before I go I want you to have something, James said, pulling out a hand sized metal, police figure, and put it in Todd's hand. "This was given to me by my father, before he left on a special police assignment. "Thank you. "He told me that whenever scared that I should look at that and remember he would always be there for me. James said, smiling, "I want you to do the same. "Yes daddy. Todd said and James grabbed him in an embrace.
"I'll always be here for you. he whispered, "Always.. He stood up and gave Alice a small kiss on the cheek. "I have to go now, he said to Alice. "Bye daddy. Todd said. "Bye James. Alice said as James walked slowly back to the car. "Bye Mike, You to John and Tom!! Alice shouted, running along with Todd in her arms. The car rounded the corner and Mike and James watched as the small neighborhood disappeared.

9. (Warning this chapter is rather graphic)
"Um guys? Why are we going to the location of a dead body? Billy said uncomfortably. "Yeah that's right, I have a hunch that this man's death was no accident. Jack said stonily., "If we can link his death to Marceni we may be able to start a wider investigation of his operations. Their car raced down the road until they reached the docks. "You know Jack, they aren't just gonna let us waltz in and search the body. Alex said in a concerned tone. "They can't stop us, the chiefs permission gives us any and all rights to search, arrest, or investigate any cases that have to do with Marceni.
"You're the man Jack, Billy said shaking his head. Alex helped Jack load out a small medical examining case marked FBI. Jack was a former FBI homicide investigator in his last job. "God, and to think I switched jobs to escape murder investigations. Jack said as they walked down hill to the scene. The area was looped off by police tape and twelve other officers were around. Four were questioning a man who had most likely found the body, three were setting up for more medical investigator while two others marked off at clipboards with red pens. Three officers walked up to meet them. The one ahead looked rather unhappy and the one on his right looked like he was going to hurl while the other looked very tired.
"Excuse me sir but what are you doing here? The one in front asked. "Lt. Jack Trayson along with officer Alex Stone and our assistant Billy Barnes. The large and severe looking man seemed to shrink as he sucked in what Jack had just said. "Barnes? Isn't that-, He began and Jack cut him off, "Yes, Yes he's the mans brother. "What are you here for? The officer on the left asked. "Investigation of a possible homicide, the body is that of a reporter investigating Marceni. Jack replied. "And? The man on the right asked with his eyebrows raised. "An if you read this it'll tell you all you need to know concerning why we're here. Jack said throwing the report into the mans hands.
The man's eyes scanned the report for a few minutes. After he finished he lowered it down and looked at the group, "I see... he said thoughtfully, "I assume one of you has experience in these matters? "That would be me, Jack said, raising the medical case. "Ok, everything seems in order, follow me. The man said and the three officers lead them down the hill to the shore of the bay. "When you're finished with the reports make sure that you leave a copy with us. "No problem, Jack said and tuned to the bay's shores where the blurry outline of a body remained in the water floating.
They stepped up to the body, as they neared a horrifying smell of rotted flesh met their nostrils. "Oh god! Billy gasped, his eyes watering. "Help me flip it over guys. Jack said, setting aside the case. The three of them each grabbed the side of the body and flipped it. "Ugh! Alex said backing up as the body fell over. Jim's body was stained bleach white, like someone out of the sun to long. "His mouth was open and wide in an expression of mingled pain and horror.
Billy surveyed the body further while Jack pulled on a pair of latex examination gloves. Jim's teeth were rotted and yellow the inside of his mouth covered with black pieces of dirt and twig. His clothes were torn at many places, Billy guessed from the bites. All along his body small and large pieces of flesh were torn away. Jack took a pair of tweezers and lifted up a small flap of skin. Maggots were infested inside and the area around the wounds were the color of gangrene.
"Oh yeah, he's definitely been here for a while. Jack muttered, poking at the skin, "Alex take the clipboard and write down what I tell you to. "Sure no problem, Alex muttered faintly, grabbing the board and taking a pin from his pocket. Jack took a tape recorder and placed it on his side. He pressed record and spoke while he examined, "The body has to have been here at least four days, judging by the stage of... he paused as a large beetle climbed out of one of the wounds, "Decomposition. He spoke calmly and professionally while Alex scratched down what Jack had told him. Billy on the other hand felt very woozy.
"Umm excuse me, I think I'm gonna hurl. He said holding his hand over his mouth. "If you do make sure you do it over the police line. Alex and Jack replied. "Mmph, Billy mumbled and ran over to the side of the hill. Jack continued to speak ignoring Billy's retching sounds in the background Jack tore open the shirt and gave a small twitch. Large chunks of flesh were torn out revealing some of Jim's ribs. "These seem to be more then random attacks, they seem synchronized, He spoke slowly, as though juggling the facts in his mind, trying to piece them together, "More like guard dogs. "This is getting weird Jack, Alex said, scratching what Jack said down.
Billy came back wiping his mouth as Jack began to examine the man's legs. He paused at the knees and his eyes widened. He tore aside some cloth from the pants that covered the knee and spoke hastily, "Billy get me a bottle of water. "Sure, Billy said and ran to the car for water. He pushed aside some metal objects and grabbed a cloth and special metal instrument. Billy returned with a bottle and Jack grabbed it, hastily unscrewing the top. "Jack what are you-? Alex began and Jack silenced him. "Shh!
Jack pored the bottle onto each knee, washing away the dirt, and wiped the water off with the cloth. "If I'm right, He said, taking the metal item in one hand, "Then this won't be an animal attack at all. He took a knife and cut around the skin taking it away to expose a small crevice in the knee. Using the metal item he inserted the tweezers into the wound. He worked around until they closed on a small metal piece. He pulled on the end and a small dented metal piece came out. "Oh my, It's a bullet. "What? Billy asked. "A bullet. Jack said, turning to the two of them. "I think we hit something big guys. He turned around and dropped the bullet into his hand. "Something really big.

Frank Nitti walked up the steps of the Cisston Chapel. He opened the doors and saw that the choir was singing a chorus. It was obviously still morning mass. He stood in the back and hummed along to a few tunes while he waited for mass to end. The preacher finished his final words of the mass, "And in the name of the father, and of the sun, and the holy spirit Amen. "Amen, everyone said. Nitti stood leaning against the confession booth while everyone left. The priest who had just gave mass saw him and walked up to him after everyone left the church.
"Can I help you my son? he asked Nitti. "I've come to make a confession father. The priest observed him for a few seconds and replied, "Very well my son step into the booth. Nitti stepped inside the booth on the left while he priest took the left. Nitti began, "Bless me father for I have sinned, It's been five weeks since my last confession, he said, "But that was in Italy so I don't think that counts here. "It's quite all right my son you may begin. The priest said through the booth.
"I have committed some crimes father. "What crimes my son? "Well... Nitti began drawing a pistol from his pocket. "I killed some people, I lost count so far how many ad I've been receiving payment for it. He said wiping the barrel with a cloth. "Good lord sir, this is a house of god. The priest said stunned. "Don't worry father, I won't be very long. Nitti replied, screwing a silencer onto the gun's barrel. "Now you know Mike Barnes don't you? "Yes. "And his brother? "Yes. "Good. "Now I need to know what precinct they work in and this... he said waving his hand around, "Is the only place I kind go for some privacy.
"Now I need to meet up with a little someone in the L.A.P.D offices, and to do that I'll need an extra set of your priest robes father. Nitti said smiling. The priest swallowed hard and looked around, "Fine just let me get you a set. He began to stand and Nitti interrupted him by firing a silent shot into the side of the booth, causing the priest to fall back down. "This isn't the first time I've done this father, I know you have a set in this booth now open the door and place it outside. Nitti replied shaking the gun back and forth. The priest obeyed.
"One more thing, where is the chief of police? Nitti asked. The priest looked taken aback by this question. "I'm sorry my son but I can't tell you, he said and Nitti flipped the safety off again. "He's in the main recruiting office. The priest said, hastily looking at the gun. "Thank you. Nitti said. "Before you go my child I must ask you one thing. The priest said as Nitti was standing up. "Yes? Nitti asked sitting down. "Is what you're doing worth risking your soul and a life of damnation? He asked adjusting his glasses. Nitti sat for a moment and fired three shots into the booth's side. "Amen. he whispered.
10.
"So let me get this straight. You think this was murder? The cop in charge asked Jack as Alex handed him the clipboard. "Of course, I've seen these wounds before. A while back a murder took place here where the bullets went straight into he knee cap. "And? "And, that means that the man could no longer walk or re grow his bone. Jack said rolling his eyes, "The wounds and scars would be permanent. The only people I've ever seen use this technique are hit men and FBI or SWAT agents. "How on earth do you know all this? Billy asked, peering over Jacks shoulders.
"I used to be in the FBI. Jack replied. "Now I need to keep this bullet. "And why is that? The officer in charge asked. "If I can use this in our search computers then I'll be able to distinguish what type of gun this is. "Which we'll be able to use to discover who has bought that gun recently or bullets for it. Alex finished, putting the clues together. "How do you know these bullets are new? Billy asked. "Now a days gun shops put small engravings on the backs of bullets to aid in any searches like this. Jack answered, pulling out a bullet and showing the back of it. A small date was engraved. "See this was bought less then a week ago. Jack said, tracing the engraving with the tip of his finger.
"Wow Jack, I have to admit, for an old fart you sure know your stuff. Alex said smiling. "Um, thanks. Jack said, putting the bullet back into the plastic bag. The cop started walking up to his car. "You guys can follow me to the station. he said, "I'll explain what's going on. The group got into their cars and sped off toward the direction of the police precinct. Once they reached the station they exited. As they walked up Billy noticed a priest stepping out of his car. "Hey what's the father here for? he asked the cop. "Beats me, probably asking the chief who the next an on death row he shall be reading to before his execution. The cop replied opening the door.

Nitti sat in the back of the car and tugged on the priest robe's collar. They were always a pain to wear, wherever he got them from. He opened the door and stepped out looking at the group ahead. He gasped. He pulled out the envelope and pulled out a set of photos. As he flipped through he saw that three of the men were his targets. But he couldn't follow them now, he would get himself killed that way. No he needed a way to find out where they were staying. He stepped out and stuffed the envelope back into his pockets while hurrying toward the precinct.

Billy held the door open for the priest and swept inside with them. They took the same path for a while until the priest turned down the direction toward the chief's office. They kept walking until they reached a large room full of testing and lab analysis equipment. "Here you are guys. The cop said and pointed to a row of computers against the wall. "Have a blast. He said and closed the door of the room. Jack placed the bullets inside a small machine which ran for a few seconds until it spit out a small disc.
Jack inserted the disk into the computers drive and many pictures of guns and bullets flashed across the screen. After a few minutes Alex sat down and stared at the screen with his eyes glazed while Billy got up and strolled around the equipment. He looked at each testing unit carefully, tying to figure out what they were when a crumpled bit of paper hit him in the back of the head. "Hey what?! He said irritably, turning around to Alex. "It's about time you listened I called your name three times. Alex said shaking his head, "Jack's found a match.
Billy sat down aside Alex and looked at the screen. "This is a M9-22, Jack said pointing at the gun and its bullets, "Specially made and very few people use them, this bullet only can fit in thaws gun so... He clicked a button and a name appeared. "Now this man is the only person to purchase this type of bullet that day. Jack said, clicking the profile. A small document appeared, "It says his name is Harry Tasker... A picture of a suave looking man appeared on the screen and Jack's eyes widened. "Oh my god... he whispered. The three of them looked at each other and said together. "It's the priest.

Nitti looked down the hall behind him as he reached the chiefs office then headed onward to Jack, Tom, and Mike's desk. He looked around to see that no one was looking and quickly slipped open the drawers and quickly closed them as he found no sign of any purchase records of a house. He looked down at the shredder and saw the torn remains of a business card. He snatched up the pieces and walked toward the chiefs office. He put his head to the door and heard that someone was speaking to the chief.
He took a seat on the bench that was outside the office and pulled out the remains of the business card. He pushed the ten stripes together and read the card. It said, Buy the houses of your dreams! Call 1-800-house business for a appointment with Willard Huzar. 6721 Tomton Lane. "I'll do just that, Nitti said to himself, smiling. The door opened and he shoved the pieces back into his pocket. The cop who had walked up with his targets, left and closed the door. Nitti opened the door and saw a short man sitting in his chair and starting on his sandwich. "Ahh you must be Nitti, please sit down.
"So...You're the big hit man of Marceni's? Calvin asked taking a bite. Nitti looked back at the man smiling, "And you must be the big snitch here. Nitti replied, his eyes flashing. "I prefer 'Informant'. Calvin said, smiling. "I bet you would. Nitti said, sitting down. "So you have any leads yet on where they may be staying? Calvin asked, taking another bite. "No, but I have a good idea on where to find out. Nitti replied with a sly smile. "Anyway 'informant', I'm going to need your help on the hit of one of these guys. Calvin wiped his mouth and spoke, "My loyalty has always been unwavering toward Marceni but I expect something I return.
Nitti looked as if this was nothing new, "Name it. He said. Calvin threw away the rest of the sandwich and straightened up. "Well you know that if they ever find out I want a plane ticket out of the U.S. "Of course. "And, I wish to move higher up in Marceni's ladder or get more pay. Nitti shook his head and looked at Calvin, "Maybe, I'll see what I can do. "That all seems settled. Nitti said, and stood up to shake Calvin's hand. While standing up the door opened and Jack stood in the door way with Alex and the others.

Jack opened the door and saw Nitti standing next to the chief. They all drew guns except the chief. "Calvin get down! Jack shouted, raising the gun, "Freeze you're under arrest! Nitti drew his gun and fired into the door's side. "Damn! Alex shouted jumping out of the way. Nitti burst through the glass door and ran down the hall. "Stop him!! Jack shouted. The cop that drove them there was in the middle of the hall and turned with his gun raised "Free- he began but Nitti ran headlong into him knocking him down.
Nitti ran through the front door with the others behind. Alex raised his gun as Nitti ran to his car. "Do it Alex! Billy shouted, running up. Alex fired and the bullet caught Nitti right in the shoulder causing his gun to go flying. They ran up and tackled Nitti. The cop who drove them ran up and began to slap the cuffs on him. He hauled Nitti up and placed one end on Nitti's right hand when Nitti twirled around with his hand on the butt of the man's pistol. He slipped the pistol out and held it up to the man's chest. "No! he cried and Nitti fired twice through the man's chest.
"No! Alex shouted and ran with Jack toward Nitti. Nitti twirled and fired a round into Billy's shoulder. "AGH! Billy screamed falling back. Jack stopped to drag him out of the way which gave Nitti the time to jump into his car. As the car drove off Billy ran up and fired five times, breaking the back window of the car. "You get the license plate? Billy asked. "No. Jack and Billy replied. Alex ran to try and help the already dead policeman while Nitti's car disappeared down the road.

11.
Billy was stitched up already by the time Mike and the others had heard the news and arrived at the precinct. "You find out who our man is Jack? Mike asked while the others checked on Billy. "No, not much, but we know what he looks like and this police report said he rented a small apartment downtown. Jack replied, "And that's a start. "Yeah, hey wait a minute. Mike said shocked, "He'll be out of there soon now that he knows, that we know, where he lives. Jack was thinking hard. "We'll have to go there. He finished. "Who will go? Alex asked. It was plain that he had been eavesdropping.
Mike shook his head thinking, "There can't be to many of us, he said with a hard calculating look in his eyes, "I'd say just the three of us. "Great. Alex said grabbing his gun and a map, "Finally some real action! Mike and Jack told the others what they were up to and left the precinct. They followed a map until they reached a dirty and grimy neighborhood. "You sure this is the place? Alex asked, hearing gunshots in the background. "Yep, we better go quickly. The three of them parked in an alley and stepped into the muddy streets, staring up at the building.
The place was dirty and grimy, with graffiti all along the sides and corners. The steps were cracked and as they walked up Jack noticed a ragged man sitting on the steps muttering to himself, "No, No, I can't do that I've got a schedule to keep. Alex opened the door and muttered something only Mike made out, "Just like home. They walked into a creaky, old room where a man sat behind a desk. "Can I help you gentleman? He said with the foul odor of alcohol on his breath. "Yes, I'm Lt. Trayson, Lt. Barnes, and Officer Stone of the L.A.P.D. Jack said, putting his badge on the desk.
The man with the slimy hair looked at the badge with sunken eyes. He acted as though cops showing up in his apartments were no big deal. "Who ya here for? He asked. "Harry Tasker. "Fourth floor, room 445. He said carelessly, throwing them a set of keys. Mike caught the keys, shrugged, and walked to the elevator. He pressed the button and waited for the elevator to lower. "Oh yeah I forgot that one's broken. Said the voice of the man behind the desk.
Mike pressed the other button and stepped into the elevator. Alex followed but Mike put out a hand to stop Jack. "Jack I want you to wait here in case he comes down. "Sure no problem, Jack said as the doors closed. "You ready Alex? Mike asked, checking to see that his gun's safety was off. "Yeah. Alex said, swallowing hard. "Good because this guy defiantly won't come quietly. Mike got off on the fourth floor with Alex and walked halfway down the hall to room 445. "Let's go. Mike said and rapped on the door with his hand three times.

Nitti fumbled with the keys off his apartment and entered it. He quickly removed the priest robes, threw them into the bath tub, and set fire to them. He turned on the sink and washed the blood of his hands, making sure none was still under the drain. He quickly scanned the apartment with his eyes and checked for any signs of hair. He knew there wouldn't be since he always wore his white hat. He picked up his gun and loaded a new clip into it then set it down on the table. HE snatched up some clothes and began to hastily shove them into a suit case when he heard a knock on the door. The person behind knocked again and Nitti grabbed his gun and walked towards the window, opening it.

Mike finished knocking and walked a step back and kicked the door in. Nitti was waiting but they were prepared. They leaned back as the three shots Nitti fired hit the sides of the wall, sending paint and wood flying. Nitti slithered out of the window and onto the balcony. Mike and Alex ran to the window and looked out. "Alex go get Jack, he's coming down the alley. Mike climbing out onto the balcony. "But, Alex began when Mike interrupted him with a furious glance, "Just do it! he shouted. Alex rushed out of the room as Mike scrambled down the metal frames of ladders that led down into the alley. He ducked to the side as Nitti fired three more times as he reached the ground.
Mike set off in a run towards Nitti. Mike pulled out his own weapon and fired wildly at Nitti. Nitti spun around and fired again as he turned sharply down the front of the building. Jack stood facing the opposite direction and spun when Mike screamed at him. "Jack! Jack! Help me catch him! Jack took off and followed Mike. Nitti ran down the alley, knocking down whatever he could to slow his pursuers, be it boxes, garbage cans, or people. "Can I help you?" A man began, and Nitti elbowed him in the face breaking the man's nose in his rush to get by.
The man fell down and Jack and Mike tripped over the man and began to climb back up while Nitti ran around a corner. Jack quickly grabbed the man. "You'll be okay, He said throwing the man back and took off running. He turned the corner with Mike but Nitti was no where to be seen. "Where is he? Mike asked frantically. "I don't know. Jack replied, "You take that way and I'll take this one. He said, pointing at the alley way that led deeper and another that led to the street. Mike took the one that led to the street while Jack took the deeper one.
Alex stepped out of the elevator and looked around. "Jack where are you? he asked quietly looking around, "Oh everybody's lost but me. "Hey you! he shouted running to the man behind the desk, "Did you see the man in white come by? "No. The man said bored and his eyes opened wide. "What? Alex asked and turned to see Nitti sneaking through the door. "You! Alex shouted, grabbing for his gun. But he was slow and Nitti had his up first. "Whoa! Alex shouted ducking and Nitti's bullets hit the man behind the desk squarely in the chest.
"AGH!! The man screamed and slumped down to the ground dragging blood on the wall as he slid. Alex knew he couldn't help the man and he set off after Nitti. Nitti was a good thirty feet ahead and he turned down a fish factories alley. Alex turned the corner but Nitti had disappeared. He drew his gun and stepped into the alley. The strong smell of old fish greeted him as he stepped deeper in. The alley was a good eighty feet deep but was a dead end. There wouldn't be many places Nitti could hide. Nitti's gun lay in the middle of the alley. He was empty.
The alley had a large set of box's along side an eighteen wheeler. farther down was a small shack. He looked under the wheeler and then inside with his gun raised. Nothing. Then he looked in the back. Nothing. Nothing behind the box's either. Alex finally stepped sideways next to the eighteen wheeler and turned toward the shack. "Come out! Alex shouted, "I know you're in there! Come out! Suddenly Alex felt as though his head had been cracked in half as he felt a metal pipe bash against his skull.
Nitti jumped down from the truck's roof. Alex saw stars and raised his gun at Nitti trying to aim. Nitti bashed the gun, denting it. Alex threw it aside and charged Nitti. Nitti side stepped Alex and bashed him in the shoulder. Alex grabbed the bar and tried to hold it. He lashed out and his fist collided with Nitti's chin, rattling Nitti's jaw. Nitti dropped the bar and pushed Alex against the eighteen wheelers side. Alex spun back and missed while Nitti grabbed his own gun and bashed Alex over the head.
Alex felt the back of his head and pulled away with his hand sticky with the blood that dripped down his face. Nitti raised a gun and said quietly to Alex you actually thought I was empty. Mike ran bye and stopped seeing Alex on the ground with Nitti's gun raised. "It's not your turn, but don't worry, I'll be after you soon. He whispered and bashed Alex over his head one more time knocking him cold. Mike drew his gun and pointed it at Nitti while Nitti did the same to him. "I'd hurry if you want to help your friend, he said grinning. They walked around facing each other and both turned in opposite directions.
Nitti turned the corner and disappeared as Mike ran to the ragged and unconscious Alex. Jack reached and stood at the alley way. "Jack call a doctor! Mike yelled and Jack turned around and took off across the street to a payphone. "How'd I do? Alex asked, smiling feebly. "You did good kid. Mike said holding a rag to Alex's head. "You did good. Mike sat there with Alex and heard, growing louder and louder, the sound of an ambulance's screaming sirens.

12.
Mike sat biting his nails outside the emergency room of the hospital. Jack sat at his side with his head in his hands. A door opened and a doctor carrying a clipboard stepped out. "How is he? Mike asked, jumping up. "I'm afraid it's serious. The doctor replied grimly, "There is a large crack in the man's skull. "Oh god! Jack said, rubbing his hand through his hair. "We'll need to place a small plate within the mans head. He'll have to stay here for two weeks. "I see, take care of him doc. Mike said. "And do me a favor, when you enter in how long his stay is, make it three weeks. Jack and Mike left the hospital and set out to their precinct.
As they walked to the precinct, Mike stopped at a pay phone. He dialed the number and Lauren answered. "Hello? "It's me Mike. "Oh hey, I'll get Greg for you. She said. A pause and then Greg came on. "Hey dad what's up? He asked. "Well we ain't doing so good kid. Alex, I told you about him, was beaten badly by a one of Marceni's hit men, he's in the hospital and it's pretty bad. "Oh man, me and the others will pay him a visit. Greg said. "He'd like that. Mike replied. "Can I talk to Jessie? Mike asked. "No problem dad. Greg said and he gave the phone to Jessica.
"Hi daddy! She said. Mike smiled, "Hey baby. How you doing? He asked. "Good I went to the park today. "That's great baby, I gotta go now I'll see you. Mike said checking his watch. "Ok bye. she said and hung up. MIke and Jack walked back down the sidewalk. Nitti watched from the top off the building. "Who are you calling? He said to himself, lowering his binoculars. "Well I'll know soon. He said. Writing down the number he had seen Mike dial. He stood up and walked to the fire exit.

Jack and Mike were forced to return to the precinct with the grim news. "Oh my god, John said, all the color draining from his face. They sat the edge of the curb and wondered what to do. "Now that you've seen what could happen, can you do this? Mike asked grimly. Not a single one of them said no. "We're in this together Mike, James said.
"At least nothing was in vein. Tom said. "No offense Tom, but I think we're off pretty bad. Billy replied. "No, don't you see? Tom asked standing up, "We know this guy works for Marceni. If we can do this, if we can find him, we'll find Marceni.
"Whatever man lets just go home. Mike said, "I need a nap. They left the precinct and went home. After a good nap they woke up and made dinner. Billy dropped his sandwich when the phone suddenly rang. "Aww... he said, throwing it away. He walked to the phone and picked it up, holding it to his ear while he made a new sandwich. "Yeah? "Hello it's me Calvin. "Oh hey chief! What's up? "I've been informed that a new recruit wishes to join you, he's transferring from New York. "Hey guys! Billy shouted, "I think we got someone else to join. "Anyway he'll be wearing a blue jacket and will be in the L.A. mall at five o'clock "OK thanks chief! Billy said as he put down the phone.
When he turned everyone was watching him. "So? James asked. "What about a new guy? "Oh he's a New York transfer and will be at the L.A. mall at five. "Billy checked his watch, well we still got three hours we better get ready. So who's gonna get him? Billy asked. "We all will. Mike said. "No more splits. I don't want another person hurt. Mike said and he opened the front door as they left.

The chief put down the payphone. He turned to Santino and Nitti. "So are you sure we can do this? Calvin asked. Santino and Nitti laughed. "My father gave me the permission to do just this. "I won't be helping though, unless you need it. Nitti added. "But I'm sure little Santino can look out for himself. Can't you Santino? Santino ignored this and spoke to Calvin. "When this is all over you can go into hiding. He added, "My father will take care of you. "He always has. Nitti added slyly. Calvin shook his head and set off down the dock. "So how many men you need? Nitti asked. "I'd say about twelve. Santino said and they laughed walking down the dock toward Marceni's home.

Two hours later Mike and the others cars drove up and parked outside the mall's entrance. "You ready to meet our mate? Mike asked. "Yeah, Billy replied as they walked up the steps to the mall. They still had a good thirty minutes left so they went to the shops to browse around. Mike and Jack had to drag Tom and Billy away from Game Stop. "Hey, Hey I was playing Halo 2!! Tom moaned as they left the store. "Dude we have only twenty minutes now, we have to start looking for out man. Mike said.
They split into groups of three and set off. Mike, Billy, and John were on the first floor while Tom, James, and Jack were on the first. Mike kept his fire arm concealed like everyone else, they didn't know what they would face. Mike and John looked at the food court scanning the area for their man and Billy checked the entrances. "Where is he? Billy asked, running into them for the third time. "I don't know, John replied, "He may be on the first floor, besides, we still have ten minutes.
Jack and the others however, had no such luck still. Jack and the others stayed together and looked around the are. "Pardon me, excuse me, pardon. James said trying to move around the crowded mall. "Man, how are we gonna find him? He asked Jack. "Beats me he may know us. They kept looking still and there would be five minutes left now. None of them however noticed a group of twelve men enter and spread out as they made their way to the second floor.
Billy looked around and finally saw their man. "hey guys I found him! He shouted across the food court. He walked towards the man while Mike and John tried to follow, falling behind in the crowd of people. Billy walked up to the man, who was turned in the other direction and on a cell phone, when he stopped upon hearing the man's familiar voice. "Yeah...Yeah Frank...I told you already...yes the men are set up and we are ready as soon as they spot me...I know father will be pleased when he finds out they're dead...yeah...ok, bye Frank. Santino hung up the phone and tuned around to see Billy with his gun raised to his head.
"Mike! John! Guys it's a set up! He shouted, still focusing on Santino. "And you... He said looking at Santino, "Are going to tell me where my nephew is now- A man in white bumped into him and turned around. It was Nitti. Billy felt where he had been ran into and felt a cold metal on his side. He looked down and saw the handle of a switchblade embedded in his side. "You, You- He stuttered and stumbled to the wall, sliding down. "Good trick huh? Santino asked laughing. "Yeah, Billy muttered weakly, "Come here. Santino leaned in, puzzled, "Yes? Billy fired a round and blew out Santino's leg from under him. "That's a good trick to! Billy shouted forcing himself to stand and scrambled for cover.
The gun blaze went off and Jack and the others rushed to the second floor. All around people screamed in horror and ran to the exits. Mike and John reached the area and saw Santino lying on the ground firing at a nearby shoe store. Mike ran up with John firing at Santino and Nitti when twelve men in suits ran up and joined Santino. Three of them had brown suits, one man in brown had blond hair and the two others were bald. Three were dressed in work clothes and seemed to be triplets. Four were in black and two others had white on. They each drew weapons, three had machine guns, and sent a have of bullets flying at them. Mike and John would have been cut in half if they hadn't dived along in the store.
"Whoa that was close-BILLY!! Mike shouted. Mike ran up to Billy. "Oh my god. Billy. Mike cried. "Hey Mike.. Billy said feebly, opening his eyes. "We sure got crappy luck eh? He asked, giving a weak chuckle. "Mike? "Yeah Bro? Mike asked, tears forming while a shoe exploded aside a shower of glass over their heads. "Find Frank. "Frank yeah. "He may help lead you to Marceni. "Don't speak Billy we'll try to get you to a hospital. Mike said, looking down at Billy's wound, "It's not to bad.
Billy chuckled and took Mike's in his, "And I thought I was optimistic. "Just do me one favor. "Yeah? Mike asked while a fresh set of tears came down. "Find Sam. And kill the slime who tore apart our family. Billy stood up. "Billy get down! John shouted. "See ya Mike, you to John. Billy said and stepped out of the store. The bullets that were fired missed him for the first few seconds. He raised his gun and fired twice, killing a man in black and another in white. But then a bullet hit his arm and another his leg. He kept moving and turned his head to Mike smiling just before he fell down with his dark hair falling gracefully along his face.

Jack and the others jumped off the escalator and Jack looked out. He stared from Sanino and his men to Mike then finally to the smiling and lifeless body of Billy. "No!! He screamed and ran into the fray. The three men in brown turned and fired. Jack nimbly jumped behind a wall and stepped back out. Bang! The bald man in brown fell. Bang! The other bald man fell. Bang! a bullet flew past and sent a shower of paint onto his faced and he missed the last man.
Mike and the others ran out in a very bold and stupid move, but it worked. The hit men were surprised for the second it took. The five of them each fired once sending the three triplets flying. The only ones left were Nitti, three men in black, the blond haired brown suit, and a man in white. James took a bullet that skinned his ear and he fell back holding it. John ducked and rolled under a bench to avoid being hit. He rolled under the bench and fired two shots that blew out two men in black's ankles the two men fell down holding their legs and John fired again hitting them both in the chest.
The Tom stepped up to a man in white who had just ran empty and grabbed him by the scruff. "No wait, I'm just doing my job! The man shouted and Jack pulled him to him so that his face was only a few inches away from the man in white's. "Yeah? He asked with a manic gleam in his eye, "So am I. He threw the man over the side and he fell with a sickening thud to the first floor. The last two men gave up and they cuffed them. Nitti was no where to be seen. As Mike walked up he pulled out his gun and fired into a man who had been crawling, trying to reach his gun.
Mike grabbed Santino and swiftly lifted him up. "Were is my son? "Like I'll tell you- Santino began and Mike threw him into the wall, drawing his own switch blade. "I am warning you Santino. He said, holding the knife to Santino's throat. "If you tell me I may leave you the use of you're legs. Santino laughed and spit at Mike. "Very well, Mike said and stabbed the blade into Santino's leg. "AGHH!!! Santino screamed grabbing for the knife as Mike pulled it out. Mike pushed Santino back with his elbow against his neck. Jack, Tom, John, and James all stood and watched, not bothering to interfere. If they could they'd do exactly what Mike was.
"It seems as though this isn't working much maybe we should go a little below the belt. Mike said, shaking the knife with a cold fury in his eyes. "OK! OK! Santino shouted. "He's with my father in- Santino began and a gun shot echoed broke out and Santino fell back with a bullet in his head. Mike stood shocked and turned to another officer who had his gun raised. "He was reaching for a gun! The officer said seeing Mike's eyes. "He was going to tell me where my son is. Mike said quietly, his brain was simply refusing to believe what had just happened. He looked up at the man and spoke. "You've killed my son.
13.
Mike slumped to a corner. He rubbed his hands through his hair over and over. "What am I going to do? He asked staring at the others. The officer had ran to get a ambulance. "We'll find a way Mike. Jack said and held out his hand. Mike took it and Jack helped him to his feet. "Now these idiots here won't know where your kid is. Tom said kicking a hit man in the stomach. "Who set this up? James asked. "Who could have got us here? John asked. Mike looked up with his eyes wide. "Get in the car, he said.

The chief sat in his chair and spoke on the phone to Nitti. "Yes...Yes I've heard...I know I will...Yes you'd better tell Marceni...uh huh- The door opened and Mike stepped in with Jack and the others outside. "Hold on, can I help you Mike? Calvin asked unaware. "Can you help me? Mike said his voice rising, "Can you help me?! No but I think you can help Marceni!! He walked up and grabbed Calvin by the neck and slammed his head into the desk, breaking his nose. Mike grabbed the phone and held it to his ear while he held a struggling Calvin by his head to the desk.
"Calvin are you there? What's happened?! "Hello, Mike said quietly. The line was silent for a minute. "Mike Barnes. "Hello. Mike repeated, "It seems your Marceni's partners are running short. No more Fredo, no more Santino, no more Calvin. "You'll never get away with this Barnes I'll see you soon, just like I saw your brother. The line went dead. Mike picked up Calvin. "So Calvin you heard about Santino? Mike asked, "Well if you don't answer my questions you'll meet the same fate.
Calvin was chalk white, he knew Mike wasn't lying. "Ok what do you want? "What's the real name of the man you spoke to? "Frank Nitti. "Where's my son? "I don't know. I swear! Calvin screamed as Mike drew his blood stained switchblade. "Hmm, what part can I take off. Mike said, his eyes cold. "NO!! Calvin screamed and people began ton crowd outside but were held off by the others. Mike held his knife to Calvin's throat. "I swear I don't know! Calvin said frantically, his pants becoming wet. "Mike released him with a look of disgust. "One more thing.
"What? Calvin asked desperately. "My brother said something about another Frank. You know my brother, the one you murdered!! Mike shouted. "Frank is Marceni's personal advisor. "How do I find him? "He has a private train that only high people in Marceni's party use. "Where is it? "It's a full dark blue train that runs at the train station. Calvin replied, "I don't know when it will come next. Mike looked at Calvin and slammed his head into the desk again knocking him out cold. He opened Calvin's desk drawer and pulled out info sent from Marceni. "Hell of a way to end a career. Mike whispered, throwing the orders onto Calvin's chest. Mike opened the door and spoke to the people. "I got a leak in there, plug him up for me.

"We've got to find out who this Frank is. Mike said, standing at a computer with Jack and Tom. Tom had a large bandage placed over his ear. "Jack do a search with this thing on any people named Frank who are connected with Marceni. And run this through evidence Tom He said handing Tom the knife that had killed Billy in a bag. "If I have to hold on to this for another minute I'll puke. Tom knew what Mike meant. "Sure Mike, He said and left the computer room. The room where they were was large but gave off the feeling that you were in a hurry. And they defiantly were.
John and James had left to go and speak to Alex and inform him of what had happened, so just the three of them were left at the police precinct. Calvin on the other hand wasn't doing so well either. He had been removed of his command and placed on probation while he waited for his trial, which was scheduled in two weeks time. Most likely Calvin would go to jail for twenty years and Marceni would use his influence, high priced lawyers, and bribes to worm his way out. At most, some of the lower members in his operation would go to jail. No one wanted to touch Marceni, cause if you did then you're dead. But Mike didn't care, all he cared for was hurting Marceni as Marceni had hurt him. Mike wanted to break him, to turn him into a broken man like himself.
Mike and his party had become something of a legend in L.A. and at the precinct. The only people who had ever dared to try and bring Marceni down. People spread rumors that he may actually have been able to bring Marceni down, having already found his two sons and his informant. Many however, expressed their sorrows and doubts for him. They knew what would happen when Marceni reached news of his sons death. They believed what Mike was doing was a fools errand and that he would pay the price.
Tom set off down the hall, feeling the watching glare of people's eyes burning into the back of his head. He reached the evidence area and entered. The room was dimly lighted and reminded him of a vampire movie. People were examining evidence from under microscopes, placing DNA in machines, and analyzing factors of crimes. He found a short Chinese analyzer and told him what he needed done. "As soon as you get this knife analyzed I want you to call us ok? Tom said in a serious, but friendly, tone, "Here's the number if we aren't here at the precinct. "Sure, Tom is it? The man asked. "It is. "We'll have it analyzed by the end of the day.
Jack and Mike were still searching when Tom entered the room. "Find anything? He asked sitting down. "No not yet. Jack replied typing rapidly into the computer. "I think I'll try and search up something on this Nitti guy. Mike said casually and sat at another computer. He typed in the description and name. "Let's see how long it takes us to find him- whoa. Mike said leaning up and looking at the profile. "That was quick. James said. Mike scrolled down with the mouse. "No wonder, He said, "Look at this guys profile. Mike read down the screen.
"Murder 1st degree, burglary, murder 1st and 3rd degree, three assault and battery charges, four manslaughter charges, another 1st degree, 3rd degree, two more burglaries, trespassing-damn what a list, and over forty links to other crimes. Mike finished, "Wow our guys sure has been busy. Tom read to, "It seems that most witnesses mysteriously disappeared or had tragic accidents mostly boating. They both leaned back. "Well it seems our little friend has been mighty busy. Toms said and added with sarcasm, "Ten points if you can guess who killed the reporter.
"Oh well we have to work with what we got. Mike said and a beep sounded. "Hey the search is finished! Jack said triumphantly. Mike and Tom crowded around John. "It seems that we have five people who match as Frank for a first name. "Two are low level workers. "Not them, Mike said, "Santino wouldn't speak to someone that low personally. "Our hit man, not him. Jack said. "A driver of Marceni's, and his personal advisor. "That's him. Mike said, "The advisor. "Exactly what I thought. Tom added.

14.
Frank sat out on the dock and was startled when his phone began to ring. "Yes. "Get Nitti and come to the dining room. Marceni said and hung up. Frank stepped across the dock onto the boat where Nitti stayed. He opened the door and Nitti was sitting on the coach watching TV. "Marceni needs us Nitti. Let's go. Nitti got up and exited with Frank. "He say why? Nitti asked as they reached the end of the dock. "No, but I guess it has something to do with Santino. Frank replied, quickening his pace. They reached the front doors and were let through by the guards. They followed the staircase up to the dining room where many guards stood. "You may enter. A guard said checking a small list, "He's expecting you.
Frank and Nitti entered the dining room. The lights were dimmed and the chair that Marceni sat in was turned toward the open window staring out at the golden sunset. Marceni spoke to them, not bothering to turn around, "Take a seat gentleman. They did as they were told and seated themselves on the squishy armchairs that faced the table. Marceni sighed, "I only wanted to run a business, a business where people could get what they wanted. He sat still with his head bowed. "During these times I had many hardships. I had lost my wife and my friends. He finally turned to them his eyes reddened and face sunken, "But now I've lost my sons and that's what matters now.
Marceni turned to Nitti, "I don't care what it takes, I don't care who you kill, as long as you do your job. He said, "Leave me. Not you Frank. Nitti nodded and left the room. "Frank? "Yes? "Do you know why I chose you to be my advisor? "No. "I knew you weren't the most experienced, you weren't the best, but you had, like me suffered to get where you were and I respect that. Marceni said, "Now I want you to tell me right here and now, "Are you comfortable with defending me in a court of law? "Yes sir. "Thank you, you can leave now Frank, close the door behind you. Marceni said quietly and Frank left closing the door on another broken man.
Marceni pressed a button and a child stepped in, Mike's son. "Come here Sammy. Marceni said in a false voice. Sam stood there staring coldly back at Marceni. "I'm not gonna speak to you evil freak. He said and Marceni's smile vanished, "I know what happened to my uncle and your son. Your kid deserved everything that my dad gave him. Marceni stood up quickly and walked up to Sam. "I could have you killed so easily. "But you won't you coward. Marceni hand flew across and hit Sam across the face which sent Sam falling to the floor. Sam stood up slowly, not giving Marceni any pleasure in his pain. Marceni tried to strike him again but Sam was expecting this. He raised his arm and caught the old man Marceni's arm in his hand.
"Take him away. Marceni said to his three guards. "Isn't that like a coward. Sam muttered as Marceni's men dragged him back to the rat infested basement he slept in. He was given no food that night but he knew that his dad was trying and that he would come soon to save him. He had to. Sam laid back on the hard floor and curled up under a small, moth eaten, blanket. He was no longer scarred of Marceni, living here had helped, he was stronger now and so was his belief that no matter what Marceni would get what he deserved. They always did.

Alex lay in his small hospital bed and felt the sore throb that still issued from his head. "Ugh no more freakin' Jell-O. He said as a nurse wheeled in his dessert. "Don't be silly you need your strength. "I can get more strength from sleeping. Incidentally, Alex had landed himself in the same room that Mike, Tom, and Jack used. The nurse had also helped Mike. "Fine I'll leave it here. She said, giving up and sat down the tray, "In case you want some of it later. She walked to the door and paused, looking back at him, "You have some visitors by the way. And left.
Greg, Jessica and Lauren entered. "Hey Alex. I'm Mike's son Greg and this is his daughter Jessica. Greg said sitting down. "Oh hi I heard about you guys. Why are you here? "Just came to visit. Lauren said. "So how you holding up? Greg asked. "Oh I'm fine, I'll be healed soon at least. Alex said. "And this must be Jessica. Jessica was hiding behind Greg's legs. "Don't be shy Jessie, he's a friend of daddy. Greg said. "Hi. Jessica said shyly. "Hmm...I never did have much luck with little kids. Alex said and laughed. The visit lasted a while and after thirty minutes they left. As Greg got into the car with the others Nitti watched them and followed them as they turned down the street.
The nurse said he had even more visitors and she left to go get the second set of people. John and James stepped into the room. He looked at them happily and spoke. "Hey it's about time you came, I've been going nuts here-what's wrong? He asked looking at their grim faces. "Billy's dead. James said. "Oh my god. Alex fell back, his brain refusing to accept this information. "How? "Set up, Calvin was an informant, James replied while John sat down, "He's in jail, Santino's dead. "Really? Alex asked, "We're so dead. He looked at them, "You do realize that right?
"Yeah pretty much, but we think we may have a lead that'll take us straight to Marceni, plus we found out our hit man's name. "The one that bashed me over the head? "Yeah. Alex sat up, "How long to I get out of here? "About a week, John replied. "Hey how's your sister? Alex asked. "She's fine, a little rattled about what has happened but fine. John replied, "She'll be here in a hour if you want to meet her. "I'd love to. Alex said and laid back wondering what John's sister would be like.
Meeting John's sister was a real treat. She walked into the room and her first impression was not different from what Alex and James had imagined. She, like John, had flaming red hair and a few freckles across her milky face. She walked through the door and embraced John. "Hey little bro. She said, releasing him, "How are ya? "Oh I'm fine. He said turning to James and Alex. "Elizabeth this is James and Alex. "Hey. Alex said shaking her hand, he had to admit she was beautiful. "Pleasure. James replied, also shaking her hand.
"Sorry about your head man. Elizabeth said sitting next to Alex's bed. "Ah I'll be fine, hey, the guy could've killed me. Alex said, smiling at her, "So how do you feel about what we're doing? "To tell you the truth I think it's very noble of you all. Elizabeth replied. Elizabeth's answer shocked Alex slightly. He had expected her to be nagging and maybe think what they were doing was foolhardy, but not noble. "Really? Tom said surprised, "I think we may bring the guy down. They stayed and talked for about an hour Alex liked Elizabeth more and more by the minute.
After the hour Elizabeth stood up, "Well I'll have to be going now. Elizabeth said, "I've got to get back to work. It's been nice meeting you two. "Yeah we'd better get going also. John said, standing up with James. "We'll see you later Alex. John gave Elizabeth a hug and left. James was halfway out when Elizabeth stopped him. "Take care of the little guy for me ok? "Will do mam, James said and left. "I hope that you get better soon. Elizabeth said, turning to Alex, "I may come see you later if I can. "I'd like that. Alex said going red. "Ok then. She said laughing and turned away, closing the door behind her. Alex laid still and silent for a few seconds. "Whoa. Alex whispered and he picked up his spoon, shrugged, and took a bite of the Jell-O.

Frank was rattled at Marceni's lack of confidence. Ever since he had known Marceni he had always been cool and confident. Now Frank didn't know what to think. He hadn't lost his respect for the man but the new Marceni seemed unconvincing to him. Frank walked to his train with Nitti at his side. Nitti would be caring out his next two names on the list, but he couldn't remember who they were. They started with a J though, oh well, he had more important things to worry about, like going to bribe the officials to keep the deaths out of the papers. At least for a while.
Nitti scratched off Billy's name with a black marker. Six more now, well five not counting the one he had put out of commission. He would do as Marceni had ordered and search for the families of these people. Yes, he thought that was the only way. Nitti didn't mind anyway, as long as he was paid. He sat back next to Frank. He'd always hated Frank, he thought he was too stuck up and conservative for the job. That's why he had tried to become Marceni's advisor but he'd lost and went back to the dirty work. The train rushed around the bend and he prepared himself for what lied ahead.

Nitti's car turned slowly around the curb and watched as Greg and the others went into the house. These must be the other family members of Mike Barnes. The number had been in the phone book along with the address. There was no mistaking the people walking into the house as Nitti looked at the snap shots of Mike's family. He would have to come back here later. This would be easy. He turned his car around and moved to the nearest electricity repair buisness. He would have to change clothes agian.

"Sorry Tom nothing was found, looks like the guy used a glove. The analyzer said, dropping the knife back into James hand. "Oh thanks anyway Bob. James muttered and went back to the computer room. "Nothing Mike. "Oh well. Mike replied, "We got his file though. Mike pulled up to the computer Jack was at. "Hey you got anything on the train schedule? "Nope nothing yet, seems our friend was a real goody-goody, no arrests or convictions and only one mark for disturbing the peace. "You know what to hell with this! Jack said, standing up and printing off the info. "I'll fax this to one of my old FBI buddies, they'll know how to find him.
Jack placed the sheet through the fax and sent it in. "Well I guess we better get home we'll have to walk since the others took our cars. Tom said, grabbing his jacket. "Hold on a second let me call my old friend, Jack said, picking up the phone. It rang for a few seconds when a scruffy voiced man answered the phone, "Hello? "Hey Rick it's me Jack. "Jack...Jack Trayson? "Yeah. "Wow!! Man it's been years! How ya holdin' up? "Never mind that, I need a favor. "Sure anything. "I'm faxing you a suspect of a criminal at large, he travels by a private train and I need to know the train's schedule. "No problem, it'll take a few days to a week but I'll get it for ya. "Thanks man, see ya. "Bye. Jack hung up the hone, grabbed his jacket, and followed Mike outside.

Frank's train arrived to a stop and Nitti stepped off. "When you've done these two in come back to this spot and receive the instructions on your next target. Along with your half payment. "Will do, Nitti added with a slick smile and stepped back from the train. The doors closed and the train took off and disappeared behind the bend. "You know what? Nitti asked, looking at a man nearby. "Do I know- "Nah, but you look like you got a big wallet. Nitti said and pulled the guy towards him, punched him in the gut, and slipped out the wallet. "Yep this'll get me through a few days. Nitti said, counting the money, "Thanks. He set off up the steps leaving the man on the ground.
Nitti reached the top of the stairs and went to a nearby restaurant. He sat down and a few minutes later a waiter with red and white jeans and tie came up. "Can I help you? "I'll have the calamari. With a side of fries and a beer. Nitti said, handing the waiter the menu. "Excellent choice sir, I'll have your order as soon as I can. "Suck up. Nitti muttered as the waiter walked away. Truth was Nitti had no idea what calamari was, so when the plate was put before him he examined it for a few minutes. "Ah it can't be that bad. He said and took a bite. Hey not bad, he thought.
Nitti whipped his mouth and took out the personal laptop Frank had given him before they got on the train. It would prove a lot quicker in helping search. Besides Nitti was getting tired of kicking the crap out of people for info. He started his search on the two men he was assigned two and put it back down. The search would take a two days anyway. He'd relax for that time. Nitti finished his meal and paid the waiter.
"You know what since you've been so nice to me I'll give you something extra Nitti said handing the man an extra ten. "Why thank you sir. The waiter said in a grateful tone. "No problem, Nitti said, patting the man on the back as the waiter bent over to get a plate and slipping out the man's wallet, "You deserve it. Nitti walked to the exit, swiping a tip from the table as he went, and left the small restaurant. He paused outside and stretched, smiling. "Yep this weeks gonna be a good week. He said and went to a special yellow car already parked, with a trunk that held everything he'd need.

15.
The FBI buddy hadn't found the train schedule yet and Billy was buried peacefully along side his family. Over the two days Alex had grown accustomed to Elizabeth's visits. They had laughed and talked of old times and Alex felt a strange knot grow whenever she entered and loosen when he heard her voice. This for some odd reason seemed to speed up his recovery as reports confirmed he'd be due out two days early. John however didn't seem to like this much. He seemed more concerned with his sister and he worried that she may be making a 'wrong choice.' Mike was out at the preceinct with Tom and Jack.
Aside that, everything passed as a normal day wouldn't when you're going up against the second largest kingpin in America. Nitti still hadn't shown his face but they knew he was still lurking around somewhere. It was Sunday again which meant it was time for James to go and visit his son Todd and Alice. He and John had decided to take two cars while Mike and the others had the other one. Mike, Tom, and John had gone back to the station again to see if the fax had arrived over night. John buttoned up his coat and was combing his hair when the phone rang. "I'll get it. James said and picked up the phone.
"Hello? This this is James speaking? Nitti's voice rang through his ears. "You know, a good family is a precious thing. I never had a good family, my dad was always abusive and my mother died young. "Nitti what do you want? James asked, his blood chilling. "A man should look out for his family even if his wife is divorced. As Nitti said that James mouth went dry. "What did you do to my family?! He shouted. John walked out of the bathroom upon hearing the shouting. "Hey James what's wrong? James silenced him with a shake of his hand. "What do you want? He asked.
"Me? Nothing. But your family needs you. James heard voices in the back ground. "James! "Daddy! James eyes filled with tears. "If you hurt them I swear- "Swear all you want, I'd hurry if I was you. Nitti said and the line went dead. James grabbed his gun and threw John his. "James what happened? John asked. "Nitti has my family. James said picking up the phone and dialing a number. "Oh my god. John whispered, putting his hands to his head. The phone rang for a few more seconds and Mike answered the phone. "Yeah?
"Mike! Nitti has my family! Get to my house now! James shouted into the phone. "If anything is wrong, park your car outside the cornfields and walk on foot to my house through them! I'm taking John with me! "Ok hurry James! Mike shouted and hung up the phone. James set the phone down and wrenched open the door. "Let's go! The two ran to the cars. "We each take one. John said opening the door and tossing John the other car's keys, "We'll take two different paths. Nitti won't expect that. The two jumped in the car and they took off. It turns out that was exactly what Nitti expected.

Upon hearing the call Mike had turned and shouted to the others, "James' family is in trouble! Let's go! The others didn't argue Jack rushed through the halls so fast that he knocked a man down into a door. "Sorry! He shouted and burst through the door, running to the car. "Hurry get it open! Tom shouted and Mike pulled open the door and got into the drivers seat. Mike started up the car and drove down the road, not bothering to stop at the red lights along the way.

Alex and Elizabeth had seemed to develop a kind of bond through her visits to him. They had no idea what had happened as they spoke with each other. "Alex could walk around now and his head barely hurt anymore. He walked the halls of the hospital with her. "So what was your family like? He asked. "Oh they were great, my father was a cop and well I'm sure you know the rest of the story. "No. What? "John never told you? She asked, looking slightly amazed. "No what? Alex asked.
"My father was a cop who had been a private investigator on the Beladi family's operations. She said taking a left. "He shut down one of Marceni's main facilities and destroyed a major drug front. "Wow. Alex said, taking in every word. "But unfortunately Marceni wasn't happy. She said and her tone darkened. "He sent a squad of his brutes to do his work, I lost my whole family except me and my brother. It was all that rat Vitoni's fault, he led the squad. Upon hearing this Alex spit the water he was drinking all down his front. "What's wrong? Elizabeth asked. "Nothing, Nothing, Alex said coughing, "Water just went down the wrong pipe.
Alex felt like he was in a nightmare. His father had murdered John and Elizabeth's family. She had no idea she was standing nest to the murderer's son. He felt dirty all over. Looking for an excuse he lied at the first thing he could think of, "Elizabeth I feel kind of sick, I think I need to lay down. They walked back to the room and he got back into the bed. They turned on the TV and they watched Die Hard together. He sat and stared at her, he didn't know how he was going to tell her who he really was.

John and James drove along side each other for the first few minutes. John gave him a thumbs up and turned down the other road. A car ahead of him finished and began to move. John drove deeper into the country and was only a minute away when he hit a small toll booth. "That'll be forty five cents please. A brown haired toll man said. John handed him a dollar. John noticed that the car that had went before him was stopped halfway through the toll gate. "Hey go! He shouted. He turned to the man at the booth but there was no toll taker in the booth. "Hello? The booth at the side opened and Nitti along with three men with machine guns stepped out and onto the pavement.
"Oh no... John whispered and unbuckled his seatbelt and grabbed his gun as the men raised the guns and fired. "AGH!!!! John screamed as the car's side and window was riddled with bullets. He opened the door feebly and slipped out onto the ground with over twelve bullets in his chest. John gasped as the pictures slid in and out of focus. His last thought as Nitti walked up with a machine gun was, Elizabeth...Nitti fired eight more times into John and John slipped away into darkness. As John's final gasps for breath left Elizabeth stood up and knocked over a table. "What? Alex asked. "Something has happened to John. She whispered, "Something's happened to my brother.

James turned the corner that led to his house and saw his old home aflame. "No... He whispered and jumped out of the car. He rushed into his house and avoided as the flames swept all around him. He heard the screams of Todd and he ran to his room. "Todd!! James screamed and he heard a shout back. "Daddy! He turned around and saw Todd hunched in a corner still holding the metal police man in his hands. He grabbed Todd and ran through the door. "Todd. He coughed, "Stay here I need to get mommy. "Ok.
James ran back through the door. "Alice! "Alice! He shouted going from room to room. He ran into her bedroom and saw her lying on the ground with a large chunk of wood on her body. "Alice! He ran to her and kneeled down next to her. "Alice are you hurt? She smiled, "Oh I can't feel much now James. He pulled up on the board but it was no use. It had weigh twice as much as him. He kept struggling when Alice's hand closed around his wrist. "James, it's to heavy we can't move it.
She smiled and he looked at her. "Get out before you die. "NO! I won't leave you behind. She laughed and coughed in her hand. "You know you can't move it. He knew she was right. "Go now and take care of Todd. "But- "Go. He held her hand in his for a few moments longer, staring deep into her eyes and let go. He turned to look at her and closed the door behind him. He ran out to meet Todd. "Daddy where's mommy? "She couldn't come Todd she had to go somewhere. He hugged Todd and walked to the car. He saw another car coming up the road. "Hey John! Hey-
He saw that it was John's car but it was filled with small holes. "Todd. he said as the car neared. "Yes daddy? "I want you to run through the corn fields till you meet a man named Mike. James said, "He'll take care of you. "What about you daddy? "I won't be coming back, just keep the police man and I'll always keep you safe. He hugged Todd and let go "Run. Todd disappeared as the car drove up to the house. Nitti stepped out and James knew right away what had happened to John.
"Well, Well, Well. Nitti said, stepping out of the car, "Looks like you're to late. He laughed and threw aside his machine gun. "Pity. He drew his pistol and placed it on his side. "I guess I've got nothing left to lose. James said, staring back. "We may as well settle this in a sportsman's way. Nitti and James stood facing each other. An old man dies so a young boy lives, it's a fair trade. James thought. As Todd ran up to Mike a gun shot broke out and echoed through the cornfields. Mike bowed his head. It's a fair trade.

16.
Mike stood holding Todd in his arms and staring at the flames up ahead. "Let's go. He said turning, "We can't help here. Jack stood staring with his coat ruffling in the wind. "See ya guys. Tom muttered and turned to the car, his hair fluttering past his eyes. Todd didn't know what to do and Mike had no idea what to say to him. "Where's daddy? He kept asking all the way to the hospital. Mike and the others would have to tell Elizabeth the news of her brother's death. Maybe this was too risky. Mike thought stepping into the hospital. Maybe to many had paid the price for their nobility.
"Tom, Jack. Mike said quietly. "Yeah? "You realize that we have lost three friends over the past four weeks? "Yes. Tom said uncertainly. "A father, two brothers. Mike bowed his head, "Do you believe we can do this? Tell me if so many have died for a fruitless cause. Jack pulled Mike around and punched him hard in the face. "Mike! Never say that! Think of Ana! Think of Sam! He shouted making people stare, "Think of Billy! How would they feel hearing you say that?
Mike looked into Jack's eyes. "Billy loved Sam and Ana, he died to help them! Jack said, "Do it for his memory and for all of us. "Yeah man, Tom said, "You convinced them to come they believed in us we can't let them down. Mike's spirit soared. "You're right. He said. "Let's go. We have to tell Elizabeth. They pushed the elevator button and stepped on. Mike looked down at Todd and thought of Sam. He'd go to the ends of the earth for him. He would save Sam no matter what.
They reached Alex's floor. Elizabeth sat in Alex's room sitting on the coach. "I'll stay here. Tom said and sat outside. As soon as Mike stepped in Elizabeth rushed to him "Where is John?! She asked hysterically, "What's happened to him? Tom stood outside and watched Mike speak to Elizabeth as Alex rushed up next to her. When Mike finished Elizabeth was milky white. She fell into Alex's arms sobbing. Tom thought of the time he shared with John, at least he was free now. At least he was free.
Tom opened the door and stood next to Jack. "NO!! How could-this-ha-ha-happen!? Elizabeth shouted through sobs. Alex looked utterly dazed as he held Elizabeth. "Where is James? He asked looking up. Mike bowed his head. "No. Alex said shaking his head, "Who's the kid? Elizabeth stopped crying long enough to glance to the corner that Todd was sitting in. "It's James kid, Nitti got him and Alice. Jack replied. "He needs a home. Mike turned to Elizabeth. "Elizabeth? Can you take care of him? Elizabeth stopped and looked at Todd. "Yes.
Elizabeth had decided to take car of Todd, she had always wanted a child. "Of course I can. She kneeled down and picked Todd up. All the pain that had burned inside her left. She held Todd until he fell asleep. "I can take care of him. "Good. Mike said and turned to Alex, "Alex, we'll need you at as soon as possible. We'll go after Marceni at the end of the week. It's time to finish this. Mike left the room after patting Elizabeth on the back. Jack and Tom followed. "Bye. They said and left, closing the door behind them. Elizabeth stared up at Alex, "I want to help you. She said, "I want to find the men who destroyed my family. Alex knew he couldn't persuade her and he sat down by her side.

Nitti strolled down the block smiling. Three down four to go. He walked to the station. Franks train was sitting on the private track. He stepped up to it and the door opened, Frank stood inside. "You've done the job? Frank asked with his eyebrows raised. "I have. Frank handed him a packet with his next target and another with a large wad of cash in it. "Pleasure doing business with you, I'll do this job faster. He said and Frank closed the door. Nitti stepped back as the train began to move away.
He waited until the train had disappeared down the bend and he pulled out his cell phone. He dialed a number slowly and held the phone up to his ear. It rang for a few moments and a man answered. "Yeah? "Hey Johnny I need a favor. The man on the other end coughed a few times, "Yeah what? Nitti smiled, same old Johnny. "I need just two extra man for a job. It doesn't matter how experienced they are. "No problem Nitti, just got some fresh meat in a few days ago. He'll be there in a few days. The man said and hung up the phone.
Nitti slipped his recently 'required' phone back into his pocket and pulled out the payment. "Yeah I'm eating out tonight. He said and walked to the exit. He went to some fancy restaurant where the food they serve is just about the size of a candy bar. Outside the restaurant he pulled out a phone and dialed another number. "Yeah hello is this the L.A. Hospital? "Yes. "Good now can you tell me what room Alex Stone is staying in? I'm an old friend. Nitti said smiling.

A day after the deaths of James and Jack, Elizabeth began to visit more often. She seemed to want another persons company, but Alex didn't mind. She had decided to adopt Todd and raise him in the absence of James and Alice. Alex was in the middle of an argument with her when a doctor walked in. "You can't go after Marceni! "How do you know what I can do? "It's too dangerous! "Ha! If John could do it so could I! I got a month of vacation and I'm helping- "Excuse me. A doctor said stepping in. "It's time to have your bandages removed.
Alex looked at the doctor then at Elizabeth. "Elizabeth I will talk about this when I'm done. She shook her head and Alex laid back where the man began to remove his bandages. When he was done the doctor pushed him up. "All done. He said. "Hey I look ok! Alex said standing up and looking in the mirror. "Can I get my clothes back now? "Certainly. The doctor said and returned five minutes later with all of Alex's clothes (free of blood) and his gun. "Bye. Alex said and the doctor left.
Alex spoke from the bathroom to Elizabeth. "Look I know how you feel but you need to take care of Todd you can maybe help me if we need research but I can't let you fight. "And why's that? She asked. Alex stepped out dressed with his gun at his side. He kneeled down in front of Elizabeth. "Because I lo- He began and a door burst open. A man in black stood in the doorway. "Elizabeth get down! He shouted as the hit man fired just massing his head. He drew his gun and fired twice hitting the man in the chest. Elizabeth screamed. "That's why. Alex said, putting away his pistol which was still smoking at the end.
17.
Nitti meanwhile, had just pulled up to Greg's house. He sported his news electricity repair man's jacket that he had acquired from the man in his trunk. He went around the back and found the main power box for the house. He looked around and pulled out a giant pair of cable cutters. Snap! The wire broke and the lights went out. He guessed that they would be back soon so he drove back to the company that the jacket said he worked for. He stepped in and went to the front desk where a large fat man sat.
"Help ya? The man muttered. "Oh I'm just checking in, I'm bob's replacement, he's sick. "Shame. The man muttered not taking his eyes off the magazine he was reading. Nitti sat at a small desk labeled bob and waited until the call came. In an hour the phone rang and he picked it up. "Hello? He asked. "Yeah our power has gone out and we just got back from the grocery store. Could ya come help us out? Greg asked. "No problem Nitti said and he took up his brief case and Bob's keys to the car out back.
He got to the front door and knocked three times. "Hello. Nick said and opened the door. "As you can see, the power isn't working. "Yeah. Nitti said and went to the back while Greg and Nick followed. "Yeah looks like some kids cut your power cords. I can fix this. Nitti said and he started working. "Great. Nick said. In ten minutes Nitti had the power back up. "Wow. Great job. Lauren said and opened the refrigerator. "This isn't working. She said. "Oh yeah I need to restart this thing it shuts down if power goes out. Nitti said and kneeled down, opening his briefcase. The phone began to ring.

"Hello? Greg asked. "Hey kid it's me. Mike said. "Oh hey dad. "Everything ok? Mike asked. "Well the power was cut by some kid and now we got a repairman over here. He's fixing the fridge. "Don't ya hate when this happens? Nitti's voice came over the phone. "Well I'm all done. Mike froze. "Greg who is that? He asked quickly. "The repair guy what's wrong? Greg asked. "Get out of the house now! Don't touch anything! Mike shouted. "Dad what- "DO IT! Mike shouted and put down the phone.
"What happened Mike? Tom asked. "Nitti's at Greg's! He found them! Mike shouted and Tom and Jack followed him out of the door and into the car. Mike sped down the street and into the small neighborhood that Greg was in. He pulled up into the drive and saw Greg, Lauren and Jessica standing on the front lawn. "Dad what's going on here? Greg asked. "That man was not a repair man, what did he work on? Mike asked. "Just the power box and the fridge. Lauren said. Mike went up to the fuse box and checked the fuse. "Clear. He said. They stepped into the house.
"Stay back Greg. Mike said. They looked at the front door. "Where is he? Tom asked. "He left before you got here. Greg said. "Where's Nick? Jack asked. "He's taking a nap upstairs. Greg replied. Nick walked down the steps. Nick yawned and rubbed his eyes. "Oh hey guys, why are you guys here? Nick asked and stepped up to them. "Where is everyone? "They're outside Nick, comne here. Jack said, standing in the doorway. Nick turned to the refrigerator. "Hey you guys want a beer or something? Nick said putting his hand on the door. "NO! DON'T OPEN-! Mike shouted looking at the device that had been planted on the door. "What? Nick said opening the door. Nothing. Mike sighed and sat down. "So you want a beer? Nick asked pulling on a beer attached to a wire. "We got- BOOM!! The kitchen was engulfed in flames as he pulled up the beer.
Mike and Jack were thrown back out onto the porch. Tom flew threw a window. "NICK! Jack shouted and tried to run in. Greg and Mike held him back. After the fire was put out Mike went to Greg. "Greg I want you to leave this state. Go wherever is safe. "But- "No Greg we can't call anymore. It's too dangerous. Mike said. Mike hugged Jessica and shook Greg's hand. "Good luck kid. Mike said. "Good luck dad. Greg replied and stepped into the car. "Good luck Kids. Mike whispered, watching the car back out of the driveway and leave. Mike smiled and walked to comfort Jack.

What had happened at the hospital caused quite a scare and Alex was forced to remain at the hospital with Elizabeth for one more day to be tested for any harm. Nitti got the news right away and he wasn't happy. "Damn, looks like they let him out a week early. He said reading from a small fax. He turned to the small hit man beside him, "Stay here I won't be long. He opened the door and stopped halfway. He remembered the small business card he had found at the police station. He fished it out. William Huzar was the man he needed to see.
He drove down the road in his new blue car and stopped at a light, loading his gun. "Now where was it? He asked himself. "Oh yeah. Tomton Lane. He pulled up into the parking lane of a small building almost empty except for a small car parked at the front in a space reserved for the owner. He was alone. Nitti looked at his appearance in the rearview mirror and stepped out, placing the gun inside his coat pocket. He walked up to a fancy door and knocked twice. "Come in. Nitti walked in on a small man behind his desk and a large fish tank. "Can I help you? He asked. Nitti smiled.

18.
Tom and the others still hadn't received the fax and Jack was informed by his friend that it would be sent to his house. They left the safe house and drove to the hospital. Alex and Elizabeth and had just been released. "You see why you can't do this? Alex said to Elizabeth. "Why not? Just because I'm a woman doesn't mean I can't- "That's not the reason! Alex said exasperated. "Then what? She asked staring at Alex. Alex stared back into her deep blue eyes. "Because-Because I- "What? Alex sighed and looked down at his feet then back into her eyes. "I love you.
This gave Elizabeth such a shock that she gasped. "But-But-We've only known each other for two weeks! Alex heart swelled and he spoke quickly. "Elizabeth. I love looking at you. I love hearing from you. My favorite part of the day are your visits. He said rambling and laughing, "I even dream about you. I knew right away, the first day I saw you, that I was in love. He took his her hand in his. "I love you and I don't even know why I'm saying this. He laughed.
"I don't think I could bare you being hurt and you need to look after Todd! He said smiling. Elizabeth didn't know what to do. "I-but you-I- She took him in an embrace and kissed him. "Whoa... Alex said. They sat next to each other silent for ten minutes until Mike and the others arrived. "You ok? Mike asked seeing the two sitting silently, and they blushed crimson. "Yeah we're fine, Alex said standing up and stumbling. Mike turned to Jack who cracked a smile. "Let's go you two, Tom said and they stood up and finally left the hospital to go back into the fray.
"Alex. Did you mean what you said? Elizabeth whispered to him. "Every word. He replied smiling as Mike drove the car into the house. "Ok I won't fight but I want to help you search or anything else. "That's fine with me. Mike parked the car and they all stepped out. "Ok this is what we need to do. Mike said, staring at everyone, "We need to find out what kind of protection they'll have on this train. Alex that'll be your job. "Gotcha. Alex said. "Elizabeth is going to help me, she said Todd's with a sitter. "Ok, Alex just find out what you can and come back at seven.
"Jack I think you should stay here and wait for that fax. Mike said. "I don't know Mike. Mike placed his hand on Jack shoulder. "Trust me Jack, we need to know as soon as possible when we get that fax. He said, "If we can get this then our plans may work, we may actually catch Marceni. "You're right Mike. Jack said. "Now Tom, you and I need to talk to the new chief of police. "Why Mike? "Just trust me. Tom nodded and stepped back. "Let's get going. Mike said and he and Tom stepped in one car while Alex and Elizabeth go in the other. Jack waved them off as they backed up and drove away.

"Uh huh...Yeah... Nitti said speaking through a phone and sitting the real estate agent's chair. He spoke through a small phone attached to the desk. "Yeah Frank...Yeah I visited the real estate agent...Yes it's 467 Ivy Dr....Yes...Yes the man was very helpful. Nitti said laughing, "Ok, I'll be done with the next job soon. Ok bye. Nitti hung up the phone and stood up, glancing at the large fish tank which now held a new attraction to its rare collection, the drowned body of William Huzar. "Very helpful. He said and left the office. He walked to his car where the sent hit man stood. "It's time for you to help. Nitti said smiling and stepped in the car with the hit man along side him.

Alex drove the car toward the jail. "Why are we going this way Alex? Elizabeth asked. "Because visiting hours are just about to start. He replied. She sat back and didn't ask him any further questions. Alex was deep in thought. Who else would know Marceni's layout? Who would know how he ran his business. There was no one else that was locked up who would tell him. Alex turned into the drive and passed through the wire security gates that helped hold in the prisoners and parked his car. He got out and opened the doors that led to the jail. The front room held a fat man behind a large desk.
"Can I help you? He asked, staring at Alex and Elizabeth. "Yes we're here for visiting hours. "Who is it you wish to see? The man asked. "Can you excuse me a moment? Alex asked. "No problem. Alex turned to a small corner and turned to Elizabeth. "Elizabeth this is the only man I know who could help us out. He said, "I don't think you'll be able to come with me. Elizabeth stared at him and laughed, "Don't be silly, who could be so dangerous or disturbing? Alex looked in her eyes. "It's Joey Vitoni. Elizabeth gasped and looked at him. "Not that murderous cretin! She shouted.
The man behind the desk looked up for a moment at the sound and went back to his computer. "I'm sorry Elizabeth, but this is the only man I know! He said. "I know and...I want to come. She replied defiantly. "Are you sure you can handle it? "Alex I've been shot at and I've lost my brother in two days. Never ask me that again. He looked in the fire that had grown in her eyes. "Ok stay here while I sign in. He walked up to the desk. "I'm here to see Joey Vitoni. "Please sign. The man said passing him a small form. Alex signed his real name, his vile last name. "He's in cell block G. "Thank you.
Alex didn't know how he was going to keep this from Elizabeth. The thought of what she may do if she knew who he was terrified him. "Elizabeth let me talk to him for a few minutes alone. He said. "Then you can help. "Ok Alex. She stood back while Alex entered the visiting room. His dad was sitting at the fifth glass window in a dark orange clothes. "Well I'll be! It's Alex isn't it?! He said as Alex sat down. Joey Vitoni was a scruffy looking man with an unshaven face and a strong odor. Yes, prison had done wonders for him. He had brown hair like Alex along with Alex's eyes and nose.
"Ok dad I know we've had our differences but I need your help. "Differences? You told that sneak where to find me. now I'm here for life. "And you deserve it. Alex said in a harsh whisper, "You left me and mom behind along with our family. Mom and Tyler both died from disease. I almost died and we couldn't get you to help! Joey Vitoni stared at him. "Ok son what do you want? He asked. "I need information. I trust you've heard of what's happened outside with me? "Ah yes the great 'Marceni Takedown', I figured you'd be dead in a day, especially with Nitti after you. "How'd you know? Alex asked. "My dear boy use your head. You think I don't have people trying to get me out?
Of course, Alex thought while his father continued. "The only reason I don't know what fried fish feels like is because I have Marceni's lawyers helping me out. He said, "You sure did give that rat a lot of info, at least he's dead. Joey folded his hands, "Surely you haven't come all by yourself boy. He said, looking around, "Who's in the waiting area? Alex had always hated when his dad had done that, he could sniff out lies and trouble like a bloodhound. "I brought along a good friend of mine. Her name is Elizabeth. He said. Joey raised his eyebrows, "Ah a little lady friend, well I'd love to meet her.
"You will dad, but first things first, Alex replied, "You are not to refer to me as your son, she has a grudge against you and don't push it. "Chill kid, I'll be fine. Joey said, leaning back against the chair. Alex stared hardly at his father. "Ok. Elizabeth you can come in now. He said. Elizabeth turned the corner, her red hair sweeping at her side. She sat down next to Alex. "Ok Joey, I need some info. Alex said, staring at his father. "Very well. Joey replied leaning forward, "What do you need? "This is Frank Klouski, Marceni's personal advisor. Alex said tossing down a small document.
"Born July 24, 1948. Age fifty two. Parents are Ellen Klouski and- Alex said and his father cut him off. "And Sean Klouski, met them both at a barbeque once, very nice people. "So I assume you knew him. "Oh yes. Alex flipped over the first page of the document and pointed at a picture of a small train. "This is Frank's personal train, I need to know when it arrives and how it's guarded. Joey took the pictures through the small opening in the bulletproof glass. "Well I can tell you how it's guarded, but the schedule changes every day as to avoid a detection. Alex swore under his breath.
"So what about all the guards? Elizabeth asked, staring at him with cold eyes. Alex saw her expression and saw she was trying to hold in her rage. "Well the lady finally speaks up. It's Elizabeth right? Joey asked smiling. "It is. "Ok well in all the years I saw the train I never once saw its guard arrangement changed. Joey replied, "There was always just five guards, two stood at the door's entrance, two more sat on either side of Frank, and one stayed in a small room at the back of the train to ambush any hijackers. "Thank you Joey that's all we needed. Alex said standing up, "Let's go Elizabeth.
They were standing up when Joey called out. "Elizabeth, wait I've heard that name before... Elizabeth froze and Alex tried to get her to move. "Let's go Elizabeth. He said. Joey called out, "That's it! It's Elizabeth Barone, Tough luck on what happened to your brother. Joey said and Elizabeth turned white with rage, "But I'm sure you're used to losing family members by now. That was what broke Elizabeth she lunged at Joey and tried to reach him through the glass. "You worthless pig! She shouted and guards began to take Joey away. "Oh yeah good luck with her son! Joey shouted, laughing manically.
Elizabeth stopped her fighting and pushed herself away from Alex. She stared at him with wide eyes. "Is it true? She asked staring at him. "Elizabeth I- "IS IT TRUE!? She shouted. Alex bowed his head. "Oh god...You-You-Pig! She shouted tears falling down her eyes, "How could you do this to me?! She pushed Alex away and ran down the out of the room. Alex stared back at his father who was being dragged away, "Why? He asked himself and ran out of the room to try and catch Elizabeth.

19.
Mike and Tom reached the station at about the same time that Elizabeth found out the horrible truth about Alex. Mike and Tom stepped through the door and found the place decorated in honor of them. A large wall was decorated with a single word 'Remember'. Under it were pictures of John, James, and Billy. As they entered people came in and shook their hands. "Sorry Mike. Many said and others said, "Go get Marceni man! Mike was in no mood for parties and he pushed his way through the crowd to the new chief's office. They opened the door and found the man looking out his window.
"Ah Mike do come in. He said turning around. He was a older man with a line of gray hair forming around his balding head. He coughed into a napkin and sat down. "Excuse me, I have a slight cough. "No problem. Tom said. The new chief's name was Benjamin Parkins. He was an old cop who had been a sergeant before Calvin was found out. He and Mike had always got along well, even when Mike was under his orders. "So how you holding up Ben? Mike asked. "Oh my old hide is fine, how about you two? "Well to tell you not so good. Mike replied. "Kinda hard. Tom answered.
"Yes I heard about you three friends. Ben said coughing, "I'm sorry Mike. Mike hated it when people tried to push all this sympathy crud on him but he shrugged it off. "No problem. "So what can I do for you Mike? "Well everyone knows what our little team is doing, I need some help. "What kind? Ben asked with raised eyebrows. "We've got a main lead on Marceni's advisor and when our friend gets a fax we'll be able to fine out what train he's on. "Yes. "Well we'll find him and if we can get him to talk we'll be able to get a warrant out on Marceni. Mike said. "And you need me why?
"When we get a warrant we'll need backup. We all know what Marceni does and if we can prove his smuggling rings are real then we'll be able to shut him down. Tom said taking over for Mike, "We need a squad or two, SWAT, FBI, L.A.P.D. anything you can get us. "This insane son. Ben said getting up, "I know what happened to you but I can't just authorize a search and arrest of this man. Mike sat still, thinking hard. "Then maybe the court system can. He finally spoke after a few minutes.
"If we get a judges authorization he'll have to apply and if we have surveillance then he can't leave his house. "Let me get this straight, you guys want to take on Marceni in court? "If that's what it takes. "Very well then. Ben said, taking a small note on a sheet of paper. "If you find this Frank then I'll talk to the court system's judge and see what I can have set up. "Thanks Ben I owe you one. Mike said standing up. "No you don't Mike, good luck. Ben said as they closed the door.

Alex ran out of the jail house and up to Elizabeth who was crying against the car. "Elizabeth- She turned around and slapped him hard across the face. "You...How could you do such a thing? Why didn't you tell me? She asked, panting. "How could I? Alex asked, "How can you tell someone you love that you're the son of the man who killed nearly everyone in her family? She looked at him with red eyes. "You knew...My brother told you. "No he didn't! Why would I lie? She stopped and stared at him.
"Why would I lie to you? Alex asked, "I'm ashamed to have his blood flowing in my veins. What do you think I like it?! Elizabeth stopped crying. "I hate my father with every bit of strength I have in my body. Alex said, his eyes watering, "I turned my father in, my own father! Because of him I lost my mother and brother! He took her hands in his, Elizabeth didn't try to move away. "He abandoned us and I lost everyone, just like you did. Alex paused for a few moments and continued. "I love you Elizabeth, how could I make someone go through what I felt? She embraced him and he held her in his arms. He let go after a minute and stared deep into her baby blue eyes. "I will never hurt you.

Jack had been almost unfazed by the death of his cousin, he had never known Nick well. Jack stood in the living room and checked his watch. It was six thirty. Everyone would be back here in thirty minutes. He turned up the volume and went to the stove. He turned it on and put some chicken and rice on the stove. He waited about ten minutes and turned the chicken over so it would cook on the other side. He was about to go sit down when a faint beeping noise made him turn. The fax! He turned off the stove and ran to the fax where a small sheet of paper was printing. He quickly read over the sheet and ran back to the living room and grabbed a phone, he dialed a number as the fax stopped printing.
The house they stayed in wasn't bad and it had plenty of exits. One in front, another in back, and finally one in the side. This particular exit faced the side of a dingy alley way with stairs that connected to the apartment across. Jack had never used this exit and as he ran to get back to the fax he failed to notice a small car park outside and the hit man Nitti had called for step out. The man took out a small witch blade and took of his shoes which would make to much noise inside the house. He leaned up against the door and listened to Jack as he made his first phone call.
Jack picked up a phone and dialed Alex and Elizabeth's number. After a few rings no one answered and he was about to hang up when Alex answered. "Hello? "Hey alex it's me Jack you almost done? It's twenty till seven. "Yeah Jack we just have to sign out, that'll take a few minutes. We'll be there at about five past seven. "Ok hurry I've just got the fax. "Really? That's great! We've got what we needed. "Ok I'll see you soon. "You to Jack. Alex said as Elizabeth shouted goodbye. Jack hung up the phone smiling, where ever John was he'd be happy with who Elizabeth had chosen.
The hit man stepped up and silently opened the door as Jack called his next number. "Hey Mike. Jack said. "Hey Jack we're on or way there, we've just gotten the ok from the chief. "That's great Mike I just got the fax. Jack said as the hit man walked around the corner and crept silently toward him. "I'll see you in about ten minutes Jack. We're already on our way home. "Ok Mike see ya. Jack said setting down the phone. The hit man was only fifteen feet away now. Jack checked his watch. It was six forty five now. The hit man was now only ten feet away. Jack leaned down to write something down as the hit man reached only eight feet away. The hit man raised his knife and Jack spun around with a shotgun in his hands. The hit man froze instantly.
"Well isn't that like a hit man. Jack said lazily, "Brings a knife to a gunfight. The man dropped the knife and started to back away to the exit. Jack laughed and advanced on the man. "Get out of here ya pansy! He shouted as the man ran out the door. Jack followed and turned the corner. "And don't come back! He shouted and stopped quickly. The man ran past a small car and Nitti stood on the metal stairs that connected the other apartments. Jack gasped and Nitti fired. Jack screamed as the bullets hit his chest and he slumped down with his back to Nitti. Nitti fired another line into Jack's back causing his blood to splatter the walls. Jack slumped down as Nitti and his hit man jumped in the car.
Jack heard the car's tires screech as it drove away out of the ally. He lifted himself up as blood leaked from his wounds. He forced himself up and dragged himself across the floor leaving a trail of blood behind him. He crawled around the corner and collapsed on the ground. Jack felt his body growing numb and he forced himself back up, breathing in harshly. He reached the fax and grabbed the fax in his bloody hands, toppling over the table as he did so. Jack laid there breathing shallowly and tuned onto his back. He looked at the phone on the floor and thought about using it but decided against it. The police would take to long. Jack was a goner and he knew it. He lay on the floor and waited.

Marceni was viewing a great opera show. The famous singer sang a song of love and deceit. His voice soared to the heavens as he sang. Marceni wiped his eyes when Nitti appeared from behind the curtains. Nitti whispered into Marceni's ear and Marceni nodded. Nitti left as the show was just about to end. When the singer finished he stood up with the crowd and clapped smiling. The next target was done and the last three would soon to be follow. He whipped his eyes as the singer began an encore for the crowd.

Mike parked the car and stepped out with Tom. He opened the door and stepped into the apartment. "Hey Jack we're here! Mike shouted. "Jack? Tom asked looking around. Mike set down his things and walked to the kitchen. He looked at the floor and his blood froze. A long trail of blood marked the carpet that began from the exit. Mike pulled out his gun and followed the trail until he saw Jack lying on the floor. "Oh god. Jack! He shouted and ran to Jack. "Hey Mike. Jack said, his voice shaky. "Tom call an ambulance! Mike shouted as Tom stepped into the room. "No... Jack said quietly and took grabbed Mike by the arm. "Take. He whispered, shoving the fax into Mike's hand.
Jack smiled and his arms trembled as he held Mike's hand. "MIke I don't care what happens today, never lose faith, keep searching for Sam. Jack coughed and blood ran out of his mouth. "Don't worry Jack, you'll be ok, just like all the other times. "No. Not this time Mike. You know that. Tom ran back in the room and knelt down next to Mike. "They're on their way. He said. Jack looked at Tom and smiled. "Mike, keep this one out of trouble for me. Jack coughed and he went into a small shock and strained to look at the two of them. "See ya guys- Jack's head fell back and his eyes dulled. "Bye Jack. Mike said, closing Jack's eyes with his hand.

20.
Jack Trayson had had everything going for him. Until he joined with Mike. Mike felt he, for the first time, was the one responsible for the death. The house was taken over for a crime scene investigation and Mike and the others had to move to another small apartment. Mike had checked the dates and found that it was still two days before the next time the train would stop. Mike had stayed behind while the others had gone to get supplies for the new home. Mike wondered the area while the rain poured down on him. He sat against a small wall while the rain continued to soak him as he thought of all the time he had spent with Jack. Mike wondered why god did this to him. He wondered why he was alive when Jack was not. A small voice echoed in his head. Sam.
He got up and dragged himself to a liquor store and bought some bottles of the strongest scotch they had.. He staggered into the room and sat on his new bed. He poured himself a shot and looked at it then drank it up and poured a large glass. He downed the glass and he drank from the bottle until his vision streaked. After an hour the others got home. "Mike are you here? Alex asked opening the door. A shot glass flew across the room. "Is that you Jack?! Mike shouted, he was past drunk. "Jack if you're there say something! Alex opened the door and Mike was sitting on the bed, his eyes were red and swollen and he was shaking from standing in the rain so long. "Oh jeez Mike... Alex said.
Tom and Elizabeth entered the room. Over five empty bottles lay on the ground. Mike never drank but his senses seemed dulled. Held a bottle in his hand which was white and shaking. Mike muttered looking at them, "You're not Jack, no Jack's dead, I did that. Elizabeth clapped her hands to her mouth. "Mike don't say that! She shouted. "What?! Mike shouted wildly, "If I hadn't told him to stay here he would've lived! Tom stepped up and wrenched the bottle from Mike's hand. "Mike think! If Jack hadn't been there we would've all been killed by Nitti! Mike's eyes widened and he stopped speaking.
"You're right Sam, I was wrong. He said crying. Elizabeth walked up and held Mike in her arms. "Ana? Is that you, no, Elizabeth let go. She complied and Mike laid on the bed, not bothering to sweep away the bottles. Mike fell asleep almost instantly. "Poor guy. Elizabeth said and walked to Alex. "Alex good luck I'll be at my home with Todd until you're done with this whole horrible mess. Alex kissed her and she left the house. Tom closed the door of Mike's room. "Let him sleep he's been through too much. Tom said. Alex got ready for bed and went to sleep as Tom shut off the lights.

Mike slept for twenty hours straight and he woke up with a hangover so bad it felt like his head had been cracked in two. Of course he woke up at the seven pm. He cleaned away the junk and went back to sleep. On the day of the train arriving Mike woke up and stepped out of bed. He still had a small hangover but he felt fine. "Hey Mike. Tom said ad he walked in the room. After a good breakfast and a shower Mike felt much better and dressed for the day ahead. "Sorry about two days ago. He said as Alex got ready. "No problem Mike, I know what it feels like to lose someone close. Alex replied.
They each grabbed a gun and the three of them got in the car and drove to the station. The train would arrive in an hour so the three of them sat in the station and waited. After thirty minutes Mike stood up and spoke to them. "Now we have to be ready for anything. This'll be dangerous. He said, "Let's go through the plan. Tom and I will take out the two guards at the door and Alex the one's behind him. "Yeah. Tom said. "After you take out the guard Tom tackle Frank so he can't get away or hurt. I'll take car of the man in the compartment. Mike said, "Is everyone ready? "Yeah. They both said.
At exactly five a small train pulled up that was completely blue. The three of them saw that the windows were tinted so the men wouldn't see them. They stood outside the door as it opened. Frank stood in the doorway with two men on his side and two behind him. "Ok Nitti your next target is- Frank began and looked at the three of them. "Hello. Mike said as he and Tom raised their guns and fired. The bullet hit both men through the skull and a fine mist of blood shot out over Frank. Tom tackled Frank and Alex walked in.
Alex fired into the two men who were struggling to get their guns out. One was hit in the head and another in the throat who slipped on the ground coughing through his shattered lungs. "What's happening? The conductor shouted and Alex fired into him. Mike pulled open the door and saw a hit man with his gun raised. The man fired once and missed Mike who nimbly dodged and shot the man twice in the chest. When it was all over the three of them picked up the cowering Frank. "Hello Frank. Mike said smiling. They dragged him away and threw him into the car as a man in white drove up.

Nitti had been running late due to the fact that he had slept in. He drove down to the entrance and saw three men forcing a fat man into a car. It was Frank and Mike's crew. "Mike started up the car and took a shocked glance at Nitti as he drove off. Nitti twirled around and the man in back pulled out his gun. "No one messes with my paycheck. He said as the car roared in the direction of Frank and Mike's crew.

"Drive Mike! Alex shouted as Nitti's car gained on them. "Can't we ever get a break?! Tom shouted pulling out his gun. Nitti's car pulled right up on the side of Mike's. Tom fired out of the window at the other hit man the man fired twice before Tom's bullet caught him squarely in the eye. Nitti pulled back a bit and the two burst through a red light. "Sorry! Mike shouted as two cars collided. Nitti and Mike's cars had just hit seventy when a cop car that had been hiding behind a sign joined the chase.
"Oh man. Nitti said as the police car gained on him. He slowed down a bit and the police car pulled up next to him with its window down. "Pull over! The cop shouted. Nitti picked up his gun. "Pull over- Nitti fired a shot that blew the man away and his squad car spun to the side as the body slid on it. The car flipped in the air and exploded behind Nitti and Mike. Nitti smiled and turned to face Mike's car. It was nowhere around. "Oh damn! Nitti shouted and screeched to a stop. They had just escaped him for now.
Mike and the others pulled over to a stop behind an ally. "Get out! Mike shouted, throwing Frank out on the curb. "Now you're gonna tell me what I want to know or else you're gonna meet up with my little friend here. Mike said, drawing his switchblade, "Just like Santino and just like Calvin. "I'll never tell you anything. Frank replied. "You can just kiss my- Mike smacked him across the face. He picked up Frank. "Hey Alex get the rope out of the car! Mike shouted. "What will you do?! Frank asked as Mike tied his legs. "Oh just gonna drag you a while. Mike replied tying the other end to bumper.
"What!? No!! Frank shouted as Mike got back in the car. Mike drove at about twenty miles an hour dragging Frank behind him for half a mile. When they parked at the precinct Frank's clothes were torn to shreds and his back was cut in several places. "Let's go Frank. Mike said kicking him to get up. Mike pulled Frank through the front door. "I'm getting a lawyer and going after you for police brutality! Frank screamed as Mike held his arm behind his back. "Oh shut up. Mike said slamming Frank down on the desk and cuffing him. He pulled him into the chiefs office and burst in. "Hey Ben you said you wanted Frank. Mike said pushing Frank into a seat, "Well here he is.

21.
Ben kept his word, a trial would be held against Maceni. In eight days time. During that time Mike had 'negotiated' with Frank until he had given them the shipping dates and types of supplying for every type of illegal substance Marceni had. It was a long list. The police district had decided to try for a warrant or surveillance from the judge of the courts. They had the best lawyers the police could offer and a witness. Of course Marceni had the best in the country and money to bribe. This would be hard.
On the day of the trial Mike, Tom, Alex, and Ben all sat in the courtroom when the doors opened. Marceni stepped through the doorway and the room silenced. Marceni was surrounded by three tall bodyguards and his team of lawyers, and (Mike gave a jolt in his seat) Nitti. Marceni stopped for a moment and looked down at Frank coldly then swept to the other end of the room. A small cop spoke loudly, "All rise for the honorable Judge Stephens. The people in the room rose and sat down as the judge did.
"Case present, L.A.P.D vs. Marceni Beladi operations. He said in a thundering voice, "Mr. Freski you may now give your opening statement. A small man stood up from next to Marceni and began his speech. Meanwhile, their lawyer, a man named Keith Crowson leaned to Mike. "Mike you should go get our man Frank from the detainment center across the street. "It'll be thirty minutes until he has to present. "No problem, I'll take three men with me because...you know. Mike whispered, shaking his head in the direction of Marceni. "Ok go on then. Crowson replied as Marceni's lawyer finished.
Mike chose three officers from he back of the room and they left as he opened the door. Mike paused a moment and saw Marceni whisper something in Nitti's ear. Mike didn't like that. Nitti walked through the door and Mike and him locked eyes as he left. "I'll see you soon. Nitti replied and walked away. Mike followed the three men to the exit and they walked across the small sidewalk until they reached a large building where the jurors and witnesses stayed while they waited during the trials.
MIke opened the door and walked to a small room where Frank sat. "Let's go. Mike said and Frank obeyed. "So you have all the info we need right? Mike asked as they walked across to the street. "Yes. To tell you I'm sort of tired of working for Marceni. Frank replied thoughtfully. "Yeah right. Mike muttered. They reached the street and started toward the courthouse. "So what do you think-? A officer began when a gunshot echoed. A split second later the man's head was blown apart by the bullet. "Oh my god! An officer shouted and ran away from the group.
"No stay here! Mike shouted, running with Frank and the other officer to catch him. The officer was ten feet from the door when a bullet spun him away onto the ground. Mike pushed Frank into the door just as a bullet caught Frank in the arm. Mike turned to a small car he knew that the bullets came from. "Nitti. He whispered as a bullet flew past his ear. Mike turned around and opened the door while people ran screaming for cover in the streets. Nitti placed his rifle away and jumped out of the car, straightening his suit.
Mike burst through the doors of the courtroom and everyone stared. "I need a doctor call the police! He shouted. As the police arrived they said they'd have to stitch up Frank for a day. Marceni's conviction would have to come another day. The bodies of the two cops were removed and a crime scene investigation took place there. They would have to wait a day for it to be ready again. This time however Nitti wouldn't have a chance to try anything. As Frank was around with them the whole time.

However, with Frank's confession next day, things didn't look good for Marceni. "Place your hand here. The cop said, holding up a bible. "Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth so help you god? "I do. Frank replied. Crowson stepped up next to Frank. "Mr. Canto, can you tell me what this is? He asked holding up a small leather binder. "That would have to be our book of transactions and shipping dates. Frank replied. "Interesting, now could you read me a few of the highlighted entries please? Crowson asked. "Yes. Frank said and cleared his throat, "Transaction #345 'Guns and Armory' shipped to the Cartel family. Transaction #267 'one hundred pounds of cocaine' shipped to private businesses. Transaction #489 'Illegal substance and alcohol' shipped to Lois Sharpton.
"That's quite enough. Crowson said taking up the book. "Your honor I object where's the proof to this? Marceni lawyer asked, "How do we know this isn't a fake? "Well all of it is signed by Marceni Beladi. Crowson replied putting the books down in front of Marceni. "I even have interviews from criminals under Marceni's command, even his former partner. He pulled out a small tape and clicked play. For the next ten minutes Marceni sat with his head in his hands as the tape went on. Once it ended the examination was finished. "You may both make your final statements now. The judge said.
After thirty minutes the judge had made his final decision. "I hereby find the defendant on charges of imprisonment...Not guilty. "What!? Mike said harshly under his breath. "Marceni had to have paid him off. "I know Mike. Tom replied. "But in light of other evidence I have no chance but to grant the L.A.P.D. a warrant of search. Marceni banged his fist on the table. "And surveillance is granted, Case dismissed. The judge stood up and left the room. "Well I guess Marceni couldn't get to him. Tom whispered.
Marceni wasn't happy however. The surveillance kept him from trying to export any business items. Frank was released a day on parole for his cooperation. He was also found shot to death a day later, as was the judge. Nitti had returned to the mansion under Marceni's wishes. Mike, Tom, and Alex had been given permission to go in with surveillance. Alex visited Elizabeth one more time before leaving to the team.

Marceni sat in his office and looked out upon his lost business. One man. How could one man do all this to him? How could a small group of seven bring him down. Marceni had called in all his men and loaded them up. They would fight when the search came. They would win and he would escape. But he had lost his respect and title now. Nitti walked into the room. "You called me sir? He asked. Marceni tossed down the rest of Nitti's payment. "Here. When the three come in, kill all of them. We will have to fight. "Yes sir. Nitti said, pocketing his money. Nitti had no intention of protecting Marceni. He would do his job and then he'd leave the country for good.
"You may go Nitti. Marceni said. Nitti left the room and another man came in. The man was almost twice the size of Marceni and had a large baldhead. "Barnes will be here with the search in two hours. Make sure everything is ready. Marcei said. "Yes sir. The burly man said. "And one more thing. Marceni said as the man began to leave the room. "Yes sir? "When Barnes comes to search. Move his kid to my office. Marceni said, "When he comes looking for his kid in the prisoner room, kill him. "Yes sir.

Mike strapped on his vest and grabbed his gun. Mike stood up on the stage to get the squad's attention. "Listen. Marceni is not going to surrender! He won't go quietly! Mike shouted and any movement ceased. "If they fire on you don't shoot them in the leg! Kill them if you have to! Tom and Alex stepped to the front of the crowd. "Bring him down! Mike shouted. Mike started on tactics next. "We will be split into three groups, each having twenty men each.
Alex stood up now, "I will be leading group two, we will lead along the docks and operations area. He said, "We will lead through the area and finish at the back entrance of the mansion. Mike spoke next. "I lead group one, which will be lead through the front entrance and into the mansion. "And I will lead group three. Tom said, "We will be lead through the mazes and after group one has entered we will proceed through the side entrance of the mansion. "Everyone get ready it will be dangerous! Mike shouted and they split into three groups and loaded onto the large trucks.

22.
Mike waved the hand and the three trucks plowed through the front gate and onto the mansion grounds. The three groups jumped off and set in their own directions. "Everyone move. Alex said as he led his men through the docks. Ten men were left to check the boats and Alex and nine others continued to the loading areas. "Where is everyone? Alex whispered when he heard a small rustle. "You. He said pointing to a man named Carl. "Move on with the operations. I need to look around here. Carl nodded and ran off silently with the others behind him.
Alex dropped his pack and looked toward the bushes. "Come out! He shouted. Nothing happened. "Nitti! Nitti stepped out upon hearing Alex shouting his name. He was dressed in his usual white, crisp suit. "Well hello Alex. He whispered, "Back for round two? He dropped his weapons and pulled out a long machete from the bushes. "Care to settle this in a sportsman like way? He threw another machete on the ground at Alex's feet. Alex dropped his gun and grabbed the bladed weapon. "Why not? Over them storm clouds formed and lightning shook across the sky. Water began to fall as Alex and Nitti raised their blades and rushed to meet each other.

Tom moved his men along the side when a bright light illuminated and a man behind him fell back shot. Up ahead, fifty men waited each holding weapons. "Fire! A tall Irish man shouted. "Fire!! Tom screamed. The SWAT teams opened fire. The men up ahead fell one by one as they ran for cover. The Irish man pulled out a rifle and fired. Tom looked back and a man fell back with a bullet hole in his plastic face cover. Tom ran up and fired hitting the man in both legs. The man was halfway back up when Tom ran passed and pressed the chamber to the man's head. "Bye. He whispered. Blam!
Tom and the other eight men ran up and reached the back gate entrance. "Move! He shouted blowing off a lock. They reached the inside of a small walkway. "Quiet. He said. They passed into a greenhouse and up ahead a small opening lead into the mansion. "You three go. Tom said and three men ran up. Tom looked at the entrance. Something was bothering him. He looked at the door and saw a small red laser line. "Hey it's open. One of the men said as the three opened the door. "Don't touch that! Tom shouted as the door passed the wire. The line disappeared and the entrance was engulfed in an explosion. The three men disappeared in flames and Tom dived for cover.

Mike reached the front entrance as the storm worsened. He opened the door and two men went ahead. As they stepped in a ring of men appeared above the stairs and blew them apart. "Move! Mike shouted and the squad ran through the doorway. The five men above fired down and hit two more men before they were killed. Mike ran up the stairs and grabbed a man. "Where is my son? He asked holding the small man. The man coughed up blood and opened his eyes. He raised a hand and pointed outside where a large shack stood. The man fell back dead. "All of you go on! Mike shouted running out the door. "I'm coming Sam. Mike whispered. Mike opened the shack door.
He stepped in and looked around. The place was empty but then he saw a small bundle. "Sam? Mike asked stepping forward. He pulled back the blanket and saw a bunch of pillows. "What? Mike asked himself and a large fist flew across the room and smacked him across the face. "Agh! Mike shouted falling back. A man twice his size stood in the doorway and closed the door. Mike stood up and spit out a tooth. "Ok. Mike said and ran to toward the man. Mike punched the man in the gut as hard as he could. The man just stood still and smiled. "Oh crap. Mike whispered. The man grabbed him by the neck and lifted him high into the air.

Tom opened his eyes and pushed the door that held him down off his body. Most of the room was covered in dust and four men were dead. Tom pulled up the four still alive and walked to the entrance. "Sir should we go that way? A man asked. "Oh come on. Tom replied, "We were just thrown across the room in an explosion, what else could there be? He was right about that. Up ahead the first two floors were empty. That was until they reached the kitchen. Tom opened the door and eight men turned around with sandwiches in their hands. "Bad time for a lunch break. Tom said, pulling out his gun.
Tom fired and a bowl of salad exploded behind him. The four men on his side fired a man with a sandwich fell back. Tom dived for cover next to a SWAT member. "Hey man. The guy said firing and hitting two guys, "I'm Barry. "Pleasure. Tom said pulling the pin out of a tear gas grenade. "Cover me! Tom shouted as he stood up. A SWAT member next to him fell back dead and Barry fired a line across the room. Tom threw the grenade and ran out as another officer fell. The grenade exploded and the criminal ran out of the room into Tom and the others line of fire. After this Tom sat back and waited for the others to arrive, which he hoped would be very soon.

Alex lashed forward with the machete. Nitti dodged to the side nimbly. "Whoa man, you gotta relax. He said slashing as Alex blocked it. Alex jumped forward and slashed down. Nitti blocked the sword and quickly slashed sideways the blade narrowly missed Alex's neck. Alex ducked and punched Nitti across the face. Nitti fell down and rolled as Alex stabbed the blade into the dirt. Nitti moved back and slashed forward slicing the side of Alex's arm. "Agh! Alex groaned, stepping back and holding his arm. Not to deep he thought and rapped it up quickly. Nitti jumped up and slashed back and forth.
Alex moved swiftly. "You rat! He shouted, moving forward. Nitti twirled back and gracefully swung the blade which sliced Alex's back. "Agh! Alex shouted falling back. "You're just like Jack and John. Nitti said laughing, Alex glared at him, "They died screaming and so will you. Alex kicked out and tripped Nitti. "Yeah!? He shouted and drove the machete deep into Nitti's leg. "Did they sound like that?! Nitti swung his machete and sent Alex's blade flying across the ground. Nitti stood up and rapped his leg in cloth that he wet from a large fountain behind him. Then he turned to Alex.
"You know what's funny? Nitti asked as he advanced on Alex who was crawling back, "You were next on my list. He raised his machete. Alex crawled back and looked at Nitti, "You know what? Nitti stopped. "What? Alex grabbed his machete and flung it into Nitti's head where it stuck. "You were next on mine to. Alex said. Nitti's eyes opened wide and he stumbled back and fell into the fountain. The water turned quickly to crimson. Alex stood up weakly. "That's for you guys. He said, looking up at the sky and he fell back against a tree, "Good luck Mike. He whispered.

Mike gasped as the man's hand tightened on his throat. He gasped and hit against the guys arms weakly. Mike felt his oxygen leaving his brain and he reached into his pocket and drew his switchblade. "Die. Mike whispered. "No! The man shouted and Mike drove the blade into his eye. The man let go off Mike and fell back into a stack of hay. Mike stood up and looked at the man. He had fallen on a pitchfork that had gone straight through him. Mike turned around and ran toward the mansion.
Mike ran up to the front door and found a few dead men as he went up the stairs. He ran to the second floor and finally the third where a gunfight was going on. He opened the door and saw a line of men firing with Tom at the front. "Hey Mike! He shouted. Mike ran to join him and within a few minutes they had cleared the room. Only five other men were alive along with Mike and Tom. "Barry you go back down and find Alex and his group with these two. Tom said, pointing at two officers. "You two come with us. Mike said, grabbing two men. The four walked down to a stair case. The final room was just ahead. "It's time to finish this. Mike said and they started up to the final floor.

22.
Mike and the others all climbed to the floor of Marceni's office. Outside of the door three tall bodyguards stood outside. As they reached the floor they both raised their guns. The place went into slow motion in Mike's mind. A bullet flew past him and a officer crumbled. He fired and a guard fell back spraying blood on the wall. Tom ducked and threw a knife which killed another man. The final man fired and hit the other man who fell back but still breathed. After Mike killed the final man he turned away. "Tom stay here and get this man to safety. "But- "Do it Tom. Tom dragged the man away and Mike opened the door to Marceni's office.
Mike opened the door and Marceni stood behind his desk with a gun pointed at the him with Sam in his arms. "So, it's you. Marceni snarled. "Drop your gun. Mike put the gun on the ground and back away a step. "Let my son go Marceni. Marceni laughed. "You've ruined my business, you've killed my sons. "And I'll kill you soon. Mike said. "Dad! Sam shouted. "Shut up. Marceni said, pushing Sam in the back. "You'll kill me? Oh no. Marceni said manically. Mike looked at Sam and he winked. Sam's eye widened and he nodded back. "Marceni give up! Mike shouted, "Your done for, you've lost!
"Well if I'm done then I'm taking you and your son with me! Marceni shouted, raising his gun. Sam turned and bit Marceni hard on the hand. "Agh! Marceni screamed and threw Sam on the ground Mike dived for his gun and picked it up. Blam! Marceni fell back clutching his shoulder. Mike fired again and blew the gun out of his hand. Mike fired next to Marceni's head. "You killed Jack, You killed john and James and my family! He shouted, "You don't deserve to live. He raised his gun. "Dad no.
Mike looked at Sam and then at Marceni. "I turned you into what I was, a broken man, you lost your family and old life. You caused the pain and suffering of many. Mike lowered his gun, "But I'm not dead. Mike put his gun away and Marceni put his head on his desk. "You are under arrest. Mike said and put Marceni in handcuffs. Sam came running up and Mike grabbed him in his arms. "Oh Sam, thank god you're ok. Mike said crying. A squad of men took care of Marceni and Mike took Sam down to the grounds.
Tom stood by Alex who was on a stretcher. "Hey Mike great job. Alex said, "I got Nitti for us man. Alex was hauled off and Tom turned to Mike. "Well I guess it's over. We're finally done. He said. "Yeah." Mike said. Mike pulled out his cell phone and dialed a number. "Hello? Greg asked. "Hey kid we're done, we're coming home. It was over and Sam was fine. It was time for them to begin their new lives. Mike went to the car with Tom and Sam at his side.

Epilogue
Marceni Beladi was found guilty by a supreme court jury and sentenced to fifty years in a state penitentiary. After Alex's injury he had to stay another two weeks in the hospital where he was visited regularly by Elizabeth. Both Alex and Mike retired to take care of their families. After Marceni's arrest his business collapsed and violence and crime in the LA area reached an all time low. After this Mike was offered a job as the sergeant and lead detective of FBI but he turned it down. He never left Sam again. Together with his son Greg he raised Sam and Jessica. Lauren married Greg six years later.
Mike, Tom, and Alex all received the medal of courage, the highest honor any civilian can receive. The families of Jack, John, and James all received a medal. Mike bought a new house where he raised Sam. Upon a plaque was Billy's medal. After two years time Mike started dating and married a year later. Tom stayed behind and in two years became chief of police. Elizabeth and Alex stayed together and raised Todd, they told him never to forget his father. A year after Marceni's arrest they were married.
Jack and the others were never forgotten even five years after their deaths. A large plaque honoring them still stands in the L.A.P.D offices today. Mike never forgot Ana or Billy and he always loved his son. Alex and Elizabeth always stayed together. And Tom never forgot them. Mike never became a broken man again.

Since you've asked, I'll tell you. Firstly, don't go getting upset about what I have to say, I speak for myself only, and I'm just another user like yourself. This is a discussion forum,(you DID see that little bit at the top that said 'Discuss...'?), it's not a place for you or anyone else to post their work. You can do that in your own little bit of ABC. Furthermore if you really want people to read your stuff and offer advice it would help if you read other peoples stuff and commenter on theirs first. That's how it works here, OK? Your story? Sorry i didn't read it.

Its a very long piece.
Hi Michael I see you've posted some other stuff up in the right spot. If you want to ask for feedback this is the right forum, just cut and paste the address of your piece and post that up instead of posting the whole thing. Then anyone who wants to can simply click through to read it. Good luck with the writing.
Wow Mississippi take it easy. Oh thanks lou I had no Idea. Anyway unless someone has a lot of time don't read this, its not my best one.

Give me the beat boys and free my soul! I wanna getta lost in ya rock n' roll and drift away. Drift away...

Well actually I thought I WAS taking it easy, you should see me on a bad day! If you don't like the answers, don't ask the questions. Seriousy though, I can't think anyone is going to read stories posted on the forum, especially long ones. Good luck with your writing anyway.

Ok I'm sorry but after telling me three times to do the same thing kinda annoys me. I don't want to start an arguement and I apologize. Does anyone know how I can just destroy this thread so it stops bothering people?
