You could have thought of a better way of letting everyone know that you were going to mexico.
All the forums are dead.

What part of Mexico? While you are down there, look for my laptop...it's a Compaq Presario loaded with nice pictures and Nicoletta's story.

Cancun is very nice. It's my home away from home. The north shore facing Isla Mujures is highly recommended(in the hotel zone) as is the Island. Water is absolutely translucent. It is hurricane season, so be careful. Chitzen Itza is a must see. If you like eating shrimp...check out the Shrimp Bucket, say hey to Juan the waiter from Pez Turista Gary. Have fun.

cheers RD, now i am panicking about hurricanes as well as air disasters - though i wouldn't mind landing on the same island as those folks from 'lost' . i'd get to the bottom of it and stopped pressing that button!
I will take up your recommendationa and seek out the Shrimp Bucket, but does Juan know you as RD?

Juan is probably dead from a drug overdose by now, I haven't been there for two years. He only knows my face and my name as Tourist Fish. He was using a Nikon digital SLR. You'll know him, he'll want to put a big funny hat on your head, take a picture and charge you 10 bucks. The food is absolutely to die for though...Yucatan eats are as good as it gets. Convert your money to Peso's for walking around cash, you'll get a better deal on purchases (they will take Peso's and US Dollars, about 11 to 1 on the Dollar but they'll round it to the nearest dollar value, with Peso's, you'll be more accurate and cheaper.) Watch out for the "time-share" scams, everyone will want to make a deal with you, even before you get out of the airport...people get ripped off easily.
Just watch those weather reports for hurricane activity. The Caribbean is in prime Hurricane season in September and Cancun is a bulls-eye. Cancun got smashed last year and the year before. They are probably still cleaning up but there is big money there so I'm sure they've fixed'r up by now. If you want to see some pictures of the area, go to my web site link below and e-mail me, I'll send you a few...no problem. I usually hit it in March or April to avoid disaster potential. Alternatly, if you haven't booked flights and hotel yet, the Pacific Coast side is absolutely fantastic and less expensive (I think) and much more likely to not have weather issues...but there are earthquakes (am I freaking you out yet?), but not quite as beautiful IMO. If the weather holds, you won't regret it. If you try to play with Hurricanes and lose, you'll be stuck in a major nightmare. You said you're going next week, I don't think you'll have a problem with a hurricane. There is usually 10 days warning of potential problems. The last storm seemed to peter out and head north I think. There aren't any storms forming there at the moment.

we have booked, my husband and I couldn't afford a honeymoon and it has only taken us 14 years to get round to it - so hopefully it is 5 star luxury all the way. As for them hurricanes - yes you are totally freaking me out - i did know we were going in the beginning of hurricane season, but i had managed quite successfully to put it to the back of my mind - no more talk of hurricanes!
thanks for the heads up about currency was going to take both as seems the best option.

I’ve been three times – take RD’s advice and change your money. The time-share scams aren’t a complete waste of time – they usually offer something nice (an excursion or a restaurant voucher, etc) for an hour of your time. It’s a perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon, which you’ll surely have at least one this time of year – JUST DON’T BUY!
Also, get away from the beaches at least once – amazing ruins aren’t far away, horse rides through the jungle, things like that.
I once got stuck in St. Thomas for a week after a hurricane - it was the best part of the trip!
That was great news to wake up to! I'm booking a flight to Nashville later today, looks like I'll have to allow an extra week to get through security. I'm not one of those people that would let a terrorist threat alter my plans though. I shall fly come what may.
i was in cancun 20 years ago, didn't think much of it tbh, it didn't seem that different from the states, and was full of american students...
i did get the ferry over to Isla Mujeres, already mentioned, and that was a beautiful island, I had a great week there, hopefully it has remained the same.
"Hurricanes, time-shares, waiters dead from drug overdoses, and now a risk of terrorists on the flight. It sounds like the holiday of a lifetime."
thanks for that Maddan, but do you know what i am still totally looking forward to it, sea, sun and sex for a week, no kids and lots of books. And yes i will try and check out the ruins, and no Mike i think Texas is a little to far.
But i am dreading the airport!

I don't fly but wished I did. I lived next to an American airbase and the sound of B-52s and B54s taking off overhead scared me shitless. I stiil hold my breath when a plane goes overhead today. And yes it's statiscally 400 times more likely I'll die on the M40 as I barrel doen to Oxford in my car. But back to the thread your going to be safe as there is talk that the security threat is just a blind, to take away our gaze upon the war in Lebanon. The Israelis are about to steam in heavy-handed in a major assault. 'Yeh go sic them Muslims' will be the general tone of the headlines in the gutter press. Have a great time.
