Sabena made a layer cake
of finest marzipan
dark chocolate interwoven
she'd baked it for her man.
Her rising love made concrete
she'd been too long alone
but the pig then went and dumped her
the same day, by telephone.

Fortified by dunkel bier
in a smoky Rheinland boozer
we told her she was fabulous
but the guy was just a loser
and, the next time she got hit upon,
as a man's romantic target
she should buy him some cheap gateau
from the Aldi supermarket.

Sabena sliced the layer cake
which we sampled for dessert
then we showered her with compliments
and kissed away her hurt.
We took the rest to Britain
and, throughout the week to come,
we painstakingly devoured
her disappointment, every crumb.
