Work Diary, 8/9/02
Now that I am a very important supervisory type person, I have a lot of
new duties. The one duty I did not expect involves returning to my
teaching roots and teaching my employees how to spell and how to format
a letter.
Unbelievable stuff. Day after day, on company letterhead, we send our
clients letters with the most outrageous spelling and grammatical
errors. Commas? Forget about it. Semicolons? In your dreams.
I am appalled?with two "p's." As my employees are at least ten years my
senior, I guess all the hullabaloo concerning poor education standards
in the U.S. is just a bunch of puffery and political whatnot.
Criminy. Yes, I am a grammar snob. No, I am not perfect in my own use
of the English language. But is it really so difficult to tell the
difference between "there, their, and they're?"
Word du jour: Grammarcide.
