Early Morning

Smoke curls from the first cigarette
coffee steams before Breakfast TV
sitting in my dressing gown
willing the day to begin

pull myself from comfy sofa
dreamily enter the bathroom
awaken to water and soap
and first dreary look at self in mirror

Yesterday's trousers will do
socks need changing tho'

grumpily iron shirt
the day is about to begin

Front door closes
my street disappears behind me
the tube station appears before me
I enter the world again

Emerge into the sunlight
another coffee awaits
and I
let the day swim around me
