Something is Sacred

The skyline was exhaust grey
we walked in silence through puddled streets.
The silence was the sound of sirens.
A bird perched on the fence with colours so bright
it made us stop where we were.
The wings were the colour
the sunset should have been
long plumes of sapphire blue
the wings were cherry red.
It looked like it had been painted
by a child.
The whole world suddenly seemed so pallid.
'Something is sacred' I said
you took my hand in yours
and the bird flew away
into far away trees
I had never noticed before.
When we walked home we went the long way
by the river
there wasn't a sound to be heard.
