I had a serious dream last night
That money was falling from the sky
And I caught it as I was gliding by
And a silver lining circled my sight.
Now I'm awake and I fret and I frown
From the dust of my long empty chest
Aspirations have long been laid to rest
And if only I could leave this merciless town.
The voices on the phone rent a blue blood cell
And the pretense of apology leaves me so cold
From the detached dismissal of a situation foretold
By a reckless past and a hollow wishing well.
I set off to make my way to a cheating pact
It's sneaky, unofficial, and I'm sinking and gone
But it's not worth the water it's written upon
And I humiliate myself for the sake of a fact.
My file of fears rises to infinity
I have never felt the presence of greed
And yet I now find to my despair a soulless need
For the realization of a dream or a benevolent divinity.
