Like George Best

He mentioned something about riding
on the back of a seahorse
swimming with mermaids
and how there is nothing more refreshing
than drinking water from rockpools.
Then he woke,
grimacing, scratching his bandaged forehead.

The next time he woke he was all smiles again
as he told me about playing football with George Best
their interchange of passes
which resulted in a spectacular
overhead kick.

The doctor said to talk to him
while he was sleeping
so I urged him to get better
but did not know if I meant it.

Because I knew he was better off in the world
of seahorses
and curling free kicks.
