When I woke up I found myselfsurrounded by bright sunlight and a lot of trees. It took me five minutes to realize I was in Toog Wood, which was situated five miles from where I lived, and my kids tried to avoid going there, as they wre convinced it was haunted.
It took me another few minutes to realize that I was tied to a tree.
"Sarah?" A familiar voice entered my thoughts. May! It sounded like her voice was coming from the other side of me. 'She must be tied to the other side of me,' I thought.
"May," I answered.
"Where are we, Sarah? I'm scared."
"We're in Toog Wood," I replied. "Don't worry, everything's going to be OK."
I wasn't sure about this, I didn't know how we got here, but I still wasn't certain we'd get out alive.
Suddenly, I heard a short tuneless whistling. May groaned. "It's him," she said. I didn't have to ask who.
Coming from the pathway in front of me, May's ex, Tom, ambled slowly towards us.
He gave me a grin, the sort a cat might give to a mouse just before it pounces.
I looked at him, defiantly, determined to show him I wasn't scared, although, in reality, my knees were buckling.
"What have you done with my children?" I wanted to know.
He guffawed. "Don't worry, they're fine. I took them straight home." He smiled. "After I told them thir mother and her friend and I were going for a little walk."
He looked at me, slyly. "Don't worry your pretty little head. I ain't gonna do anything bad to ya. I just wanna teach ya not to mess with me again."
"What are you going to do?" Screamed May. "IOf you hurt her, if you've hurt Lauren..."
"Don't worry, I didn't touch Lilly, I told her the same thing I told Sarah's kids. Now I'm going to untie you both and start teaching you some lessons."
Tom produced from his jacket pocket a large butcher knife. He creeped towards me, held out the knife, and cut through the rope. He went over the other side of the tree and dragged May over to where I was standing. I hugged her. "Everything will be fine," I reassured her.
"SHUT UP!" Tom screamed. "YOU STUPID BITCH! OF COURSE IT WON'T!"
I don't know what made me do it - fear for my life, probably - but suddenly I saw red, and, yelling like a native American, I ran over to him, grabbed his knife and stabbed him through his heart.
Tom turned round, looked at me through surprised eyes, and stumbled to the ground, as dead as a doornail.
I dropped the knife with a clatter. Then, the horrific incident suddenly struck me, and I started bawling.
May came over. "Don't worry," she said. "I would've done exactly the same thing." She gave me a little peck on the cheek. A warm feeling cascaded over me, one I'd never felt before, not even with my husband. May looked at me, a strrange look locked on her face, and then, before we knew it, we were snogging!
