"What is it? What's happened?" Rubean looked from Felps, to Dibs, to me, and back to Felps.
Felps and Dibs looked at me. I sighed. It would have to be my responsibility to tell him. Seeing as I was the one who took the call. So I told him, didn't I?
"Oh, don't worry, we get one of those calls everyday." He came over to the desk, and opened a drawer out. I only made out a blur of electric blue, before the something hurtled all around the room.
"What is that?" I asked.
"It is a Squiggle. Favourite pastime of kids. You let it out of somewhere, ie, like the desk drawer I've just let it out of, and then you have to catch it. Kids love it."
"But what are you doing with it?"
"Well, the guy I was dropping some stuff to, his little daughter came out, and asked me if I had any Squiggles, so I'm letting it out, and I want Felps and Dibs to drop it off." He beamed at Felps and Dibs.
"Oh, I want to it," I blurted out.
"Why?"
"Well, it gets so boring, doing the same stuff every day. Which is what I'm doing. Answering the phone when it rings. 'hello, sir, madam, you want this sir, madam? Ok, whatever you say, sir, madam." I looked at him, practically begging.
Rubean looked at me, a pitying look in his eyes.
"Do you feel you're up to the job?" He asked.
"Yes," I said.
"And do you honestly feel like you're doing the same crap every day?"
"Yes."
"Ok, then, the job is your's. Only one thing though, seeing as this is your first outing, you need someone with you, Felps and Dibs?"
They jumped to it. "Yes, Boss, sure thing, Boss."
Twenty minutes later, the spaceship was loaded up with one Squiggle. Felps and Dibs, not villains anymore, let me sit in the front seat with them. I had sit in the middle, Felps on one side, Dibs on the other. Before take-off, they warned me to put my seatbelt on, make sure it was tightly screwed in, and to keep my hair flattened at all times. I thought the last request a little strange, but followed it through anyway.
"Ok, here goes," said Felps, about to press the big blue button. "Oh, one more thing," he said turning to me, "Make sure you never press this big red button."
He went to press the blue button, but Dibs put a hand on his arm.
"What is it, Dibs?"
"We've forgotton the Gummi Bears."
Felps tutted and punched the button. With a sudden whirr, the ship lifted itself into the air, and took off.
We were flying for about ten minutes, when all of a sudden, we all heard a sort of sqeaking sound, like a very large mouse.
"Oh, oh, sounds like we need to stop for gas," said Felps.
We had to travel for another three minutes before we found a gas station. We dropped to the ground and pulled up to the nearest Gas Squeezer.
While Felps and Dibs loaded the ship up with gas, I got out and wandered around the place, because my legs were so cramped. I went into the shop, not to buy anything, just to look around. In the corner, I noticed a tall figure wearing a black cloak looking in my direction. I couldn't tell if it was male or female, because they had their hood up.
I got bored of looking in the shop and decided to exit. Just as I got to the door, the figure pulled down it's hood - revealing it was a woman. A very sexy woman, she had brown hair which wavered like a mermaid, and the sort of face you couldn't stop staring at once you looked at it. Her face was like looking at a siren.
She came over to me.
"Hello, stranger. Haven't seen you here before."
"No, this is my first day on my new job," I said.
"What's your name, young man?" I couldn't help noticing her voice sounded like sweet music.
"Mer."
"Well, my name is Anfina, and I've been looking for someone like you for quite a while."
I wasn't listening. I just let her put her arm round me, and lead to the the back of the shop, and through a door marked 'private'...
Meanwhile...
Dear Mum and Dad,
All is well. Don't worry, I'm not dead. Well, obviously, seeing as I'm writing to you. I haven't found Mer yet, but I thought I'd write to you, to let you know that you don't need to worry about me. I am in the mountains, dodging all sorts of dangerous animals. At the minute, I've found refuge in an abandoned cave, and writing to you. Oh, well, might as well carry on looking for Mer,
All my love,
Juniper X X X
Karina watched from the bathroom her husband, who was getting ready for bed. She couldn't understand his attitude. When Mer disappeared, he was genuinely shocked and worried about his youngest son. And yet, when Juniper went missing, he didn't seem bothered. Juniper had left them a little note to say he'd gone looking for his brother. But all Mitha did was shrug his shoulders and announce he was hungry.
And Juniper had written them a letter, stating he was OK, a few days later. Mitha was the one who got the mail. He read out Juniper's letter in a sarky, high-pitched voice, then crumpled it up and chucked it in the fire. Then he announced he only had one son, called Mer.
She came out of the bathroom now and entered the bedroom. Mitha turned and smiled at her.
"Darling," she began. "Don't you think you're being silly about Juniper."
Silence. Then: "Juniper clearly stated he didn't care about his brother, so he doesn't deserve to be worried about."
"But," Karina started.
"Listen, Karina, I don't want to hear it. If you're that worried about him, then you go and look for him. Otherwise, shut up, ok?"
