"Dad, where are we going?" Lisa asked, as she piled into the back seat of my car, along with Larry.
"Oh, nowhere that special," I lied, as I started up the engine, and reversed out of the driveway.
When I got my brilliant idea last night, I immediately went on the internet, to see where the nearest Childrens' Home was. When I found out, I looked up the phone number and rang them up; asking them if they could take in two well-behaved children. Their mother had ran out on them, not wanting to come back, and I wasn't really in the perfect situation to look after them by myself.
It took at least three quarters of an hour to find the place. It was large building, much like a school, and there was a woman with short brown hair and a flowery t-shirt and skirt set waitin g outside of it.
"This looks like a school," Larry said.
"No, it looks more like an old mansion," his sister argued. "Dad? Are we going to park up and look inside?"
I smiled at her through the mirror. I parked the car where the woman was standing and got out. The kids followed suit.
"Hello," the woman smiled at all of us. "I am the social worker Eliza Raisin. Are these the kids you are wishing for us to welcome to our happy family?" She smiled down at them.
"Yes," I answered.
Larry and Lisa looked confused.
"What's going on Dad?" Larry asked.
"I'm so sorry kids," I said, getting back in the car. I revved up the engine, and sped away without a backward glance.
I felt really guilty about not saying goodbye to the kids, but they were to young to really understand what was going on. I was only doing it to get revenge on that bitch.
When I got home, I rang Tom.
"It's OK, Tom," I said, when he oicked up. "I've got rid of the sprogs. Now, I can be with you."
He sounded happy on the other side. I hung up and made another phone call...
It was so lovely staying at May's. The next morning, she made me breakfast in bed; two slice of toast, jam on one, marmalade on the other, a cup of coffee with swirly cream on the top and a couple of chocolate fingers. She even served it to me on her prized willow set, that she only ever keeps in her living-room cabinet for show, so I knew I meant something special to her.
I had slept in the spare room next to Lauren's bedroom. She knew I was there, but her mother and I told her that I was staying for a few days, because I'd got into a big argument with my husband.
May got into bed with me while I ate my breakfast.
"I'm so glad we're together at last," she said. "I know you're the one for me."
I hugged her. "You mean a lot to me too, May," I answered. "I feel that I love you in the way I never loved Gerry. I want us to be together forever."
After breakfast, I got out of bed, and got dressed for work. It was a long, tiring two hours, because I really wanted to get home nto May, but finally it ended, and I was on my way home.
When I got in the door, May greeted me, but she looked panicked.
"May, what's wrong?" I asked, getting panicked myself.
"You didn't take your phone to work, Sarah. It's been ringing and ringing for ages. It's flashed 'Gerry' every single time."
I ran up my room. I found my phone on my bed. I picked it up, and looked at the 'Missed Calls' list. Gerry had rung five times, but nobody else had.
I called Gerry's number.
"Hello, Sarah," he said, as soon as he picked up.
"What do you want?"
"You're the one who ran
g, Sarah."
"I only rang because you rang me five times while I was at work."
"Oh that. I've rang to tell you that I'm going to live with Tom now."
"Is that all?"
"No. It seems like you was never going to come back for the kids. I can't exactly take them with me. Tom and I are moving up north in a couple of days. I stuck them in a Childrens' Home."
I went red. I couldn't he said that so casually, like he'd said: "I've helped myself to the last chocolate digestive."
"I was going to come back for them!" I screamed down the phone at him. "I was. You should've given me the chance. I was going to come over to collect them after lunch. Why didn't you ask me?"
"Well, you made it quite plain that you didn't want to lookk after them anymore. You told me it was my turn now. Well, I've had my turn. Seeing as you don't want to play the game anymore, I gave them to someone who does want to play."
"You can't just do that. They're my kids. I didn't mean what I said last night. It was the spur of the moment. I was pretty mad at you."
I couldn't believe what he'd just done. Not only was I going to get a divorce, but now I had a fight to get my kids back on my hands.
"Well, Gerry, I've got some good news for you. I'm getting a divorce."
"Well, that's the best news I've had all year," came the sarcastic answer. "Tell me, is this because I got rid of the kids without consulting you?"
"No, because you were going to be leaving me for some bloke called Tom."
"Well, I have as much right to be mad at you, you were going to leave me for your dyke best friend!"
"Don't talk about May like that!"
"I'll talk about her how I like. Fucking homewrecker."
I was seeing red. I was getting madder and madder. I was sure I had steam coming out of my ears.
"Goodbye, Gerry," I hung up.
"Oh, Sarah, what's wrong?" May asked, coming in my room, and seeing me crying.
I told her what Gerry had done.
"That's terrible. What are you going to do?"
"I'm going to get them back," I said, determined.
"I don't care what it takes. I'm going to take them back. And if that means goiung to court, then so be it!"
I couldn't leave the kidfs at the Home, not knowing what the Hell was going on. It wasn't fair on them to get caught up in this. I know why Gerry was doing this. He was using them to get at me. They were a couple of pawns on his vicious game.
"I'm going over to our place," I told May. By 'our place', I meant where Gerry and I lived. "He might be still there. I'm going to sort it out."
"Do you want me there?"
I thought about it.
"Yes," I answered. "I'll need your support."
Whern we got to my old house, we found the front door was unlocked. We went straight in, and looked all over the place. We finally found him in the bedroom, packing a few suitcases.
"Ah, hello, Sarah," he said, looking up and seeing me. "I knew you'd turn up. He saw May standing there. "And you brought your dyke friend with you for moral support. How very touching."
I reached over to slap the silly smug smile off his stupid face. May grabbed me. "It's not worth it," she whispered in my ear.
"Now, Sarah," Gerry said, calmly picking up a pair of boxers, folding them up, and stuffing them in his suitcase. "I understand that you want to get your kids back, is that right?"
"Yes," I said angrily, through gritted teeth.
"Well, you see, you won't be able to. Before I dropped them off, I rang the Home to confirm I could." He smiled, an evil smile. "I told them that we adopted them a couple of years ago from another Home, and now you couldn't be bothered to look after them now. They wouldn't let you take them back, not even if you begged."
"What!"
I couldn't believe it. Gerry had overnight turned into some sort of monster. He had changed, dramatically.
"You're such a hypocrite!" May piped up. "You're just doing it to get at Sarah. But you was going to do the exact same thing to her. Only she beat you to it!"
"Who asked your opinion, homewrecker?" Gerry spat at her.
"Don't talk to her like that," I said.
"Shut up!" Gerry barked at me.
"Let's get out of here, Sarah," May said. "He's going to turn into my ex, and put you in hospital."
"Ah, yes, May. Your ex," Gerry turned to May. "Your ex was called Tom, right? Well, it may interest you to know that it's your ex Tom I'm going to live up north with."
The words clanged round my head. No. No, it couldn't be true, it was so silly. I looked at May, and was shocked to see she had turned milky-white...
