GIRLS ABOUT TOWN.

They meet at a favourite haunt of theirs. It’s a Friday night, a few cocktails have already been ordered and drank. The bar is abuzz with chatter and the CD player is tuning out Nina Simone, Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, before moving on to some Bossa Nova.
Nicky takes another sip of her Daiquiri, “I just don’t get it. We’ve been going out for two years. Two years! And he isn’t sure about moving in together. I ask you?”
“That’s men for you. Want to have their cake and eat it,” Liza sinks back into the 50’s leather armchair.
“Girls aren’t much better you know. You should see some of the fights Rebecca and I have,” Sophie adds, running her manicured hands through her glossy waves of brown-with-just -the-right-amount-of-highlights.
“Yeah, but at least you understand each other. I’m really thinking about batting for your team, the way things are going,” Nicky calls the bartender over and orders a Mai Tai.
“I’ll have a strawberry Margarita, frozen, please,” Liza puts in her order, smiling way too long at the new BBB - boy behind the bar.
“And a Caipirinha for me please,” Sophie winks at him, not to be outdone. “He’s cute, even in this subtle lighting,”
“Perhaps, because of this subtle lighting,” Nicky’s cheekily adds.
“Anyway, are you still talking about the baby issue?” Nicky turns to Sophie.
“Yap. She’s set her mind on having one but figures it’s only fair for the kid to grow up with a proper mom and dad. I mean, can you imagine that coming out of a seasoned dyke?”
“That’s really silly. Everyone accepts same-sex parenthood, single parenthood and all the other variations. What’s her problem?”
“Conditioning and nagging parents. So Liz, are you serious about this having a baby on your own business? It seems like really hard work.”
“I haven’t changed my mind. I’m looking at the options. Sperm bank, donation from a friend, cute BBB…”
“You saucy minx. I saw you checking him out. But seriously, having the whole responsibility, financial and otherwise is daunting, isn’t it?”
“Yeah. But who’s to say having it with someone means they’ll be around long enough to raise the kid together?”
“You’ve got a point. I mean, Sam is so immature sometimes, I can’t even imagine it. It would be like having two kids.”
“I like the idea of having a baby. All that bonding and playing…”
“Easy for you to say, you’re so skinny and gorgeous you’d probably look radiant.”
“Well, going it alone is one thing, but what are you doing for sex?”
“Ah, that’s where Ann Summers comes in. Have you seen the toys they have these days? Better than the real thing. Less messy and annoying too.”
“Get off. I need a warm body not a vibrator.”
“I vouch for that. Although you wonder if all the drama is worth it at times.”
“Basically, things have to change. Women won’t put up with nonsense today.”
“Damn right. If I earn my own living and I’m perfectly capable of entertaining myself, I want to be with a guy because he adores me, shows that he cares.”
“um, calls when he says he’ll call, remembers anniversaries, thinks of romantic things to do…”
“Same applies to girlfriends. Actually Rebecca really surprised on my birthday. You remember, don’t you?”
“How could we forget? She whisked you away to Florence for the week. Now Sam has never, and I mean never, done anything like that.”
That’s why I’m sticking to my guns. Been there, done that. I’ll have the guys as and when it pleases me, on my terms.”
“Think of Sex in the City…”
“Or L Word.”
“Us girls have to take what we want when we want it.”
“Damn right.”
