Loosen My Grip

I have to walk a mile out
Of my way to avoid the restaurant
Where we first met.
Remember you slipped from
My fingers like the glass I dropped
When I first got your message.
I couldn’t get out of bed for days.
Numbness. Better to feel nothing
Than the pain of letting go.
That door in my mind I’ll never open
Because I know you’re waiting behind it.
The key wastes away his existence
Under the mat. He collects dust just as you do.
I hope you choke on it!
Then he arrives and I hear
The click of the lock.
