Heather Smith tapped her fingernail to her teeth once more before finally tossing the folder on her desk. Yawning, she stretched and stood up from the seat she hadn't left for three hours.
"Tea," She called to her secretary in the next room, "Can you get Mr. Thomas on the phone for me please?"
The shuffle of papers and clicking of telephone keys told Heather that Tea was doing as she asked. A few moments later Tea called into her office; “Mr. Thomas on hold for you Ms. Smith.”
Heather picked up the phone.
“Mr. Thomas, I am glad I could reach you. I am pleased to say I have some good news concerning your divorce.
Zachary Klein rolled onto his back and stared at the ceiling. He still couldn’t believe he was being accused of kidnapping. From the day he had started teaching nearly five years earlier, Zack’s first concern was his students. So much so that his wife divorced him after four years. Said his mind was more on defending his students than defending her.
And now he had an appointment with a court-appointed lawyer to keep him from going to prison.
The smell of cotton candy filled the air as eighteen year old Heather headed toward the Ferris Wheel with her friends for their last ride before the fair closed. In line, her best friend Christine tapped her on the shoulder and pointed a few people in front of them.
“Hey look; there’s Zack.”
Heather looked up from where she was playing with her necklace; a blood red ruby cut in the shape of a crescent moon; and blushed when Zack’s eyes met hers. She quickly looked down and lightly punched her friend’s arm.
Five minutes later she was strapped in and the wheel started moving. At the top of the circuit, Heather was so caught up in the size of the moon right above her, that she hardly noticed the small movements of her necklace as it slipped off her neck. Panicked, she lunged for it, but missed as the ruby fell beneath her and wrapped around one of the large bars that kept the Ferris Wheel stable. Surprisingly, seconds behind that necklace was Zack; walking the bars to retrieve the necklace Heather’s mother gave her before she died.
Heather absently played with her ruby moon necklace as she stared at the file of her new client: Zachary M. Klein. 28 years old. Teacher at Pine View Elementary School. Charged with the kidnapping of six of his students on the 23rd of October, 2008.
Heather took a breath and closed her eyes.
“Ms. Smith, your three o’clock appointment is here.”
Heather’s eyes flew open. The client never knew who the court appointed as his lawyer. Heather’s stomach was suddenly full of knots. What a great way to meet up with someone you haven't seen in ten years.
Especially since Heather had crushed on Zack Klein all through high school.
Zack cracked his knuckles for the fifth time and followed the short blonde down the hall. While she talked with his lawyer, Zack glanced around the room. There was a couch against the left wall, beside a lone plant, and on the other side was a window that Zack contemplated jumping out of. Even though he knew he was innocent, Zack couldn't help but feel nervous. Something about this meeting felt weird. But the blonde secretary came out of the back office and beckoned him in, so Zack couldn't finish out his plan of jumping out the window and running to Las Vegas.
Zack walked into the office, and immediately noticed a woman in the corner. she had her back to him, and Zack took in her figure. Slim with long legs, the woman looked to be around 5'5". Her dark brown hair rested just above her shoulders, and she was fiddling with her necklace. Something about her seemed familiar, but Zack couldn't put his finger on it, so he just waited patiently in the corner. After a few moments the woman sighed and looked up.
And Zack gasped.
End Chapter One
Zack swatted at another gnat and looked around the barren terrain of southern Australia. The sun beat down relentlessly as the seniors of North High Marching Band walked around, examining the natives and buying souvenirs to take back to small town Clarksville Georgia. As he scanned the horizon, Heather and her best friend Christine walked into Zack's view. following close behind were a couple of native boys. Zack was about to call to the girls when the two boys following them started talking and made Zack stop mid-breath. Whistling and carrying on, the boys had started picking on Heather and Christine. the two girls pretended not to notice, which only made the boys angry. One of them ran up to Heather and grabbed her arm, and Heather reared around and slapped him.this pissed off the boy and he raised his hand to hit her. Zack lurched into action and ran in front of the angry boy as his fist was coming down. it hit Zack in the lower left jaw, but didn't hurt much. Suddenly Heather stepped in between them and put her hand on Zack's which was raised to hit the boy back. She said something about being nice, and led him away, Christine on her other arm. Zack had only noticed after everything that Heather was shaking the whole time and had tears in her eyes. Zack had never felt so angry in his whole life.
Zachary stood, gaping at the woman he hadn't seen in ten years, and the only thing he could think about was that day in Australia, when Heather had stopped him from beating up a boy that was much bigger than he was at the time.
