the accused

The night air was bitter and slowly making its way across the skies to freeze my tingling body. As i walked past Philles diner, i couldn't help but feel a pull towards that place.
'Go on. Just step inside, what are you waiting for?'
Luckily it was open and i stumbled in around 2a.m. i regained my vision after the initial shock of the beaming lights; scanned my surroundings, then headed to the bar to get myself a drink- i'd drink anything after the day i'd just had.
i sat there, starring down into the glass retracing my steps throughout the day. occasionally i glanced up towards the bartender when i was ready for another drink. i tryed to distract myself from the days events with: the buzz of the fluorescent lights above me, the ever-growing smell of coffee gettin deeper with every breath and the solemnness of the dismal song -just loud enoughto hear- playing over and over again from the tattered old jukebox that had been awkwardly shoved in the far corner of the room.
It was useless, my mind kept falling back.
'Stop complaining you old fool'
This time though, when i glanced up. I spied a man sitting opposite me, slightly lent forward over the bar, armsfolded neatly infront of him. His suit, sharp at the adges and dark, matched his hat that had been tilted off to the right covering part of his face.
On the left side of him a young woman sat, focusing on her nails while brushing her other hand through her hair. She wore a tight crimson dress that clashed with her long, curled, blond hair looking almost white as fresh spun silk - as did her skin- under the stale glow of the light.
the couple were clearly with each other but not together.
i don't know how long i'd been lost in my thoughts or when they'd come in but something about those two unsettled me, and the bartender too as he never took his eyes off them. But he didn't convince me entirely either. i mean why would a man at his age be working in a run down diner at 2a.m?
something here didn't add up. So, I leaned away from the edge and sunk into the little shadow there was seeping in from the outside; the air was still trying to catch me.
I watched. Waited. i needed somwthing, anything that would give me a clue as to what was goin on here. After all it is my job. Well, was my job.
'You're not finished yet! There's still one more mystery to solve. It's not going to escape you again and it's not goin to get you either. I won't let it!'
A familiar feeling is creeping over me now. I've been watching the couple for over half an hour and it appears they've been doin the same to me. I don't know what they're waiting for.
'Probably for you to leave so they can follow you. Well, don't let them get the satisfaction. You're gonna have to sit it out. Wait for them to leave first! You've got nothing left to live for now'
i silently chuckled myself; did a quick scan of the room, then, made myself over to the jukebox. ripped the plug from the wall; the crashed to the ground heavily; finaly that infernal racket had ceased. Swiftly i moved back to wherei had been previously situated drawing the nught air in; took one last glimpse at my surroundings, then collapsed. My chair went flying across the room.
And that's how it ended. My life.
