Shadows

Shadows of a timeless past
Haunt my thoughts , endlessly
Stalking , talking , muttering
with cold vacant stares of disgust...
Greying eyes watch my every move
Shadowing my every emotion
I stop and they turn
I turn and they quicken their step...
Behind me ; At my side;
As I turn faster and faster
in the windmills of my mind
I find sanctuary in a voice...
A whisper...
The light reveals a shadow and the being
Like a mirror
It reveals yet fails to engage
Like a fire
It rages yet does not burn
I learn to love again
To touch softly and gently , a caring hand,
a hand that guides
Not knowing the power in it's tenderness...
Helplessly I feel it touch my beaten soul
Caressing endless hurt and neglect
Sighs of love flow across the shore
Wave after wave of gentle , caring pleasure...
We crash together on the rocks of life
and recoil in the foamy white waters of release
Our eyes deeper black , widening , searching
Our mouths as one...
lips barely touching, warm and moist...
I sense you in everything
Calmly you kiss a tear from my cheek
I seek your solitude
Yet the shadows return to watch us...
Judging...
Tirelessly holding us to account
In the darkness
I run through corridors and doors
yet in every room they are there...
Waiting...
Aimlessly I run and scream and shout
I fall , defeated, on my knees before you
Sweat pours from my very soul
I awake and open my eyes
and see you staring at me...
A silent silhouette
Surrounded by the light
hand outstretched
You lift me safely into your arms...
And the nightmare becomes a dream once more.
