LAST DAY
NATALIE WOOD
ANOTHER BOTTLE OF WHITE WINE.
IT'S ALL SO MIXED UP AND CONFUSED
ALL THIS RUDE TALKING, ALL THE ABUSE
DROWNED IN THREE BOTTLES OF CHAMPAGNE.
HER DARK BROWN HAIR TRIES TO CONCEAL
HOT TEARS ESCAPING FROM HER EYES
NOT TO REPLY...THAT COULD BE WISE
SHE THRIVES WITH PAIN, AND SMILES TO APPEAL.
AMONG THE SHOUTS THE CURSES GROW
HER SIGHS ARE MUFFLED BY THE BRAWL.
THE FRIEND IS FOE, HER HUSBAND FOUL,
HE'S FAST TO ENRAGE, TO APPEASE SLOW.
AND ALL TOGETHER TO THE YACHT,
THAT'S NAMED 'SPLENDOR' LIKE HER LIFE,
THEY JUMPED ON BOARD AND IT'S A STRIFE
TO KEEP UP SOBER, NOT DISTRAUGHT.
SHE'S WILLING TO CALL IT A DAY,
AND WRAPPED IN HEAVY WOOLEN COAT,
LEANS FROM THE RAILING OF THE BOAT
TO SEE....THE SEA...SHE WONDERS 'WHY?...AND SWAYS,
AND FALLS,.. AND DROWNS...AND IS THIS REAL?
IT'S HOW IT HAPPENED?...HOW SHE COULD?
THE SHINNING STAR NATALIE WOOD
ALL WET WITH SADNESS...MUTE AND STILL...
