"Good morning henry" Same time as usual for old malaki, every day for the last 4 years he would walk up and back down the lane to milk his cow, after his wife died he went into a state of depression, until he got that cow, now 4 years later she's getting old too, Poor old malaki.
"I say henry, how's that book of yours coming along?"
"Aye shan't be long now, I've been doing some research on the ancient mayans, gonna use some of their doctrine to round it up"
"Oh well, good luck with that, I'll see you at the summer fair will I?"
"That you will, that you will"
He was such a caring old fool, always making sure everyone else's business was in order. I had forgotten all about the summer fair till he mentioned it, usually I get to judge the poetry competition between the little un's. But this year I haven't seen my invite. Maybe Miss Reiley had forgotton.
"Yoohoo, uncle malaki, you about," "yes son i'm over here"
"what you upto there then malaki,"
"Well if you use your common sense you will see Im trying to get this stupid bike wheel on"
"well I can see that but why you struggling like a cat in a sack? just loosen that clip there ya silly old mule"
His nephew Pete was forever the class clown, he was never bothered by anything, he was so laid back that his neck felt the pot holes in the ground. I suppose in a way that he gave Malaki a reason to be cheerful, seeing something of himself in his young kin.
It had rained none stop for the last 2 days, typical english weather for this time of year; Early Summer. I had just received my invite from Miss Reiley to judge the schools poetry competition at the summer fair, all was well.
Old malaki had been doing his rounds this morning with his idiot nephew in towe. Silly Pete, it was only a year ago I caught him in the allotments with some mucky books, the dirty little get ran a mile when he realised he had been caught. he's never looked me in the eye since.
Still Malaki see's the good in him.
I remember last year halfway through the summer fair when the clouds opened on us, the colours on Miss Reileys totem pole running all down like a rainbow in a waterfall. The children saw the funny side, poor Miss Reiley had hoped she would get to display it in the school hall after the fair. 4 weeks it took her to paint it, and may I say how beautiful it was.
Well enough of the memories, I did have a reason for gathering you all here, but old age seems to have picked away at my train of thought, it happens you know.
An old friend of mine once told me that television causes it, but I don't have one so it can't be true for me.
Anyhow, I'm off to start reading the entries for the competition, hopefully they'll be some good pieces of literature for me to sink into.
See you at the summer fair.
