Coupling

A couple, primed for life
sweep through the open street
kicking leaves with abandon
and whistling randomised tunes
through their teeth.
Brian smiles, he's found the one for him,
and Sue smiles too, she's bagged a good 'un,
and politely they hold hands, and smoothly
they dance, in the night club they met at
two years ago.
Later they limp into a cab and zoom home,
practice rubbish sex, fall asleep in a heap,
but they're together, and that's all that matters,
yet in the back of their minds they wonder
how long it will last.
In a developing theme, from the storm
of the street, the jobless guitarist sitting
day after day, as Brian treds to work gingerly,
and Sue clip-clops to stores and whistles,
another Monday morning.
