Getting On: Chapter 3

Frank couldn’t sleep. It wasn’t usual for him. He lay in bed thinking of the last time he had not been able to sleep. He had given up drinking and smoking. All in one go. He had had to do it that way, couldn’t cut down like some. But it had been hell. Felt just like this did, trying to hang on to the idea that something was going to do you good in the end even though it felt like bloody hell at the time. But then maybe that proved it, if it felt hard to do it would turn out right. God’s idea of a joke. He stopped thinking about God to a tug at a winceyette pyjamas leg. He felt hot. He undid the top button of the pyjama Jacket. This visit tomorrow, making a clean breast of things, a death bed confession but a bit previous, well that was the result of God too and so it must be right. It had been for Mary, all for Mary. All she wanted was to be a respectable woman so Edward could get on. That’s what she wanted. All I wanted was for her to have it. That’s why. All for Mary.
