nameless streets

The drum beats
at the back of your mind
since you left him in the morning light
now theres streets in a nameless town
he talked like a gentleman
but wouldn't take to Paris
a solitary bus home
like a meandering river
a pictured mosaic of people's lives
saturday night's drunken dreams
you were a small town girl
remembering cold milkbottle legs
gossiped confinement
joy division records
in the back bedroom
radio reggae show
and you don't want him
to make you go back there
so you're leaving
on the morning soup run
gaggled with gasped ciggarrettes
the slow dream guiless
in its unfolding story
you,an unknown starlet
of nameless streets
