Chapter 1
I didn’t see it coming I just felt the pain, the life slowly going out of me almost like a colourful light floating up to the sky in one last scream, then everything faded to black.
My green eyes flashed open to a luminous purple sky, I had never seen anything like it, I’d heard of the Northern Lights but this was so much more captivating.
My body ached, usually whenever I woke up I used to bolt upright in bed almost as if I needed to get out of bed and not miss a second of being awake. I always thought that you could sleep when you were dead.
This time was different, this time I was aware I should be in pain, I moved very gently to sit up. All around me was what looked like snow but it wasn’t cold. It even sounded like snow as my boots squeaked as I stood up.
I didn’t know where I was, It was the middle of October, where would there be snow in England! And why was the sky so purple. I was still wearing the same clothes as I was last night, my black jeans that now sparkled with the snowflakes still on me, my cheap boots that I got for work because my others were so tattered they looked like they had mouths on them and if I wanted to I could have made a puppet show with them.
My t-shirt however was different, it was still my t-shirt with my favourite band the Cure on it with the quote “Boys don’t cry” on it, it was usually dusky pink with some punkish small tears on it. Now the tears were bigger and there was a huge brownie red stain on it that started at the top of chest all the way down to my hips.
Seeing the sight of it made me feel sick, my hands started shaking and I felt like my legs were that week I could barely stand upright. I had seen blood before on a number of occasions at work but this was different, this was my blood. All sense and rationality went out of the window and instead fear and panic possessed me.
Why couldn’t I remember what happened last night! I heard a noise not far away all around me was open space but it wasn’t clear to see, in fact it was quite dusky. The noise grew closer; it was the sound of someone walking on the snow.
I didn’t even think about it, I just ran the adrenaline took over as my mind flashed through the events of the evening.
The Evening
So much had happened that day at the Police station, it was my friend Felicia’s birthday and I was supposed to have finished at 20:00 but unfortunately just as I was about to lock up a woman stormed in. She was a regular short dark spiky hair that looked unwashed a really baggy grey sweatshirt and pants.
“It’s your fault” she screamed at the top of her lungs “it’s your fault” she sounded like a cat in pain.
“What is Sinead?” I asked calmly
“You fucking know what!!!” she screamed thumping at the bomb proof glass that guarded my face.
“Right calm down Sinead and take a seat” I said, I knew straight away that she was drunk as I could still smell the alcohol through the small gap in the tray in which we used to pass things through.
“Are you going to FUCKING do something” she screamed as saliva squirted out onto the glass through the toothless gaps she had in her mouth.
“Yes, just take a seat” I said in a more commanding voice.
She reluctantly stopped down on to the grey cold benches that were screwed onto the wall, before she screamed “Bitch.”
I walked into the back room where my friend Amy was, Amy was a Detective Constable but she had just popped in to see me, so was just dressed in civilian clothes.
“How did you stay so calm?” she asked “I’ve rang upstairs and Rick and Tim are coming downstairs” we could hear her from the microphones whimpering “help me.”
She regularly came in screaming and shouting about how the Police were to blame for everything, she was a regular thief, a drug addict and assaulted people on a regular basis.
I text Felicia saying I was going to be late.
My work station was in the middle of the office and I had been on my own all evening as we were horrifically short staffed and all the staff we did have had been dropping like flies.
I was exhausted, I was also a Special Constable as well as a Front desk worker as they weren’t recruiting anymore and wouldn’t be for at least five years, so I thought I would do this as well to improve my chances of getting a job when the time came.
I had been awake at 5am every morning that week and I hadn’t been back home till 22:00 two nights in a row as I had training sessions. My body ached and I had been nailing every energy drink known to man, Oh and the most sacred substance...coffee.
“Weren’t you going to Felicia’s birthday tonight” Amy asked, Amy didn’t like Felicia.
“Yeah I am, hopefully if I get to finish” I said chuckling, until Sinead had come in, I had managed to catch up on all my work and had no incidents to deal with now. It was just a question of waiting now.
Rick and Tim soon came to the reception area in their full uniform. Rick was brilliant very authoritative and asked her what the issue was.
“It’s your fucking fault I’m homeless, I was just trying to help you out” she screamed
“Right come with me Sinead” Rick said leading her down the corridor for some privacy.
Tim came into the office; he was very tall with strawberry blonde hair
“You might as well close up Silver” he said to me
“Yes!!” I shrieked as Amy laughed and rolled her eyes at me.
“Off to the pub by any chance?” Tim asked grinning
“Where do I get this reputation from? I will have you know I have not been out for ages!!” I protested, which was true.
I just think that all the Bobbies loved the illusion that every young girl in the station was a crazy beer guzzling party animal. In reality me sat at home in my really unattractive pyjamas with little cuddly cartoon pictures of Wolves on them, whilst I watched reality TV was not the best fantasy for anyone.
“Right we will have to catch up another time” Amy said it looked like she really wanted to talk about something.
“Yeah definitely hunny if you need me call me” I said giving her a little squeeze.
I pressed the electronic lock button and went out to the reception area to lock the main doors. It was really dark outside as the street lights were not working.
All of a sudden a felt like someone was watching me, the hairs on my neck suddenly stood on end and squinting my eyes a peered outside to see a shape by the building across from us. It shocked me and I moved back. It was just someone having a fag brake or a shadow I thought as I turned the lights off and went into the corridor.
I had brought a change of clothes with me and I couldn’t wait to get out of the frumpy uniform the white shirt was really baggy and the pants came way passed my hips until they were under my boobs.
I styled my short red hair and put extra make-up on to hide the circles under my eyes. My phone started ringing, I knew Felicia would be getting impatient, I picked it up quickly.
“ Hey hunny, I’m on my way now, sorry I’m late, got freaking stuck at work you know what it’s like!”
I often rambled, especially when I was in a rush.
I got no reply but could hear breathing.
“Hello?” No response.
I looked at my phone; the number was withheld and suddenly disconnected.
I shrugged my shoulders and started putting on my red lipstick, If it wasn’t for my bright red hair, I would probably double for Snow White right now.
I Put my uniform in the lockers, grabbed my bag and rushed out of the Prison that was my work. I walked through what used to be the old exercise yard for the prisoners when we used to take prisoners into the station now there was a designated custody centre about 10 miles away from our station.
I then shut the massive gates that seemed to tower over you like a big tall building showering you in darkness.
Now
I was running as fast as I could on unstable legs I saw a forest coming up, that in the light the branches looked like skeletons fingers reaching up to the sky, twisted and contorted.
Suddenly I felt a weight an almighty weight on top of me knocking me to the ground.
I moved over there was a man who looked just a couple of years older than me with the darkest eyes I had ever seen.
“Don’t worry I’m not going to hurt you” He gasped out of breath
“Who are you? What do you want?”
“My name is Max, there is a lot we need to talk about but first of all we need to get away from here” he said frowning.
“Why should I trust you? What’s going on?”Panic was all around me.
“You just need to trust me. There are not a lot of things that can hurt you around here. But that’s the exception! So please just take my hand and come with me and I will explain everything” One thing we learnt at Specials was to assume nothing, believe no-one and question everything. I was not about to grab his hand and come with him, so I made a run toward the forest.
“Oh no you don’t” he said grabbing my arms so I couldn’t move
“Let me go!!” I screamed as loud as I could.
“Listen to me lady, your dead, I can’t hurt you because you’re dead” The threatening words seemed to wash over me until I feel like I couldn’t breathe any more then Max reached into his pocket and pulled out a sharp jagged knife that sparkled even in the dim light. It looked so magical as it cut through the air and down towards me and stabbed me right in the heart.
I stumbled forward looking at him helplessly waiting for the pain, waiting to fall over but I didn’t.
“Your dead” he repeated and I remembered the evening.
