Morning Light

Shop windows show keepers
opening up, the wet street invites my feet
in early morning as I close your door.
My mind's traction control failed
and I'm sliding in free-fall
back to my home in the gloaming.
I tried to reason with myself
about what had just happened
and what you had said.
The sky lightened and gulls
heralded a new day, awake
to the gathering activity.
Sleep is all I could think of
my legs weakening with every step
each step less certain.
I promised myself I would
deal with this in the morning
as the gulls started singing again.
