Fear

I am afraid
Of heights and spiders,
Of bridges and balconies.
I am afraid
Of the ocean when it's deep and my bedroom closet,
Of darkness and nightmares that yank me from sleep.
I am afraid
Of the lights that pause at our driveway and the cars that follow me too long,
Of the sounds houses make at night and being alone (literally, figuratively).
I am afraid
Of never doing anything of meaning in my life and wondering what could have been,
Of the person I passed being angry and seeing him lean over to grab a gun in my mirror.
I am afraid
Of never being good enough and failing at everything I try,
Of our basement and her dogs running away if I'm not careful.
I am afraid
Of cornfields at night and braking late,
Of dying and what comes after.
