The woman got up on the stage, where she was joined by another woman, with ginger hair pulled back into a ponytail. All of us girls seated ourselves into the chairs. I made sure I sat next to Red Star.
The blonde woman surveyed us. She had a pleasant smile. “Welcome to 99% Wicked School,” she started. “ I am your headmistress, Miss Firebell. I hope you settle in nicely, and have a nice year. This year, there are only twenty of you in the first year, so you will all be in the same class. Last year, there were forty, so there were two classes. The year before we had one hundred and sixteen, so we fit them all into six classes.
“Because there are twenty of you, there will only be five dormitories. Four girls to a dormitory,” - I looked hopefully at Red Star. - “It will be going alphabetically.”
“Oh, no,” I mouthed at Red Star.
Up until now, the ginger-haired woman had been sat down. For the first time she stood up and joined Miss Firebell.
“I am Miss Burnout. Your class mistress.” Miss Burnout was another one with a pleasant grin. ‘Maybe this school’s the opposite of Miss Goatleg’s Academy,’ I thought to myself, ‘maybe it turns people pleasant.’
“I will be taking you up to your dormitory,” Miss Burnout continued. “Miss Firebell will read out your names, four at a time, and I shall take you upstairs.”
She nodded at Miss Firebell, who held up a long bit of paper, and called out the first girls’ names:
“Agon! Apple! Angel Ash!”
“It’s a pity you can’t sure a dormitory now that you’ve made such good friends,” the snobby girl from earlier, who had been sitting next to Red Star, said.
“Shut up, Singe,” said Red Star. “Have you made any friends you want to share with?”
Singe, the snobby girl, gave us both a nasty smirk, and looked away.
Miss Burnout came back and Miss Firebell read out the next four names:
“Banana! Blue-Flame! Candle! Crackle!”
As Miss Burnout lead the second lot of girls away, Singe leaned over and said: “They did it on purpose, you know, the alphabetical thing, they saw you two had already made friends. They like to split up friends where they can, so they can’t cause much trouble.”
“It’s a pity you haven’t got any friends to get split up from, isn’t it!” Red Star retorted.
Singe stuck her tongue out at Red Star and said: “Is that the best you can come up with?” She looked away again as Miss Burnout came back.
“Flame! Fox! Ginger! Hot!”
