Dear Diary, You’re the only one I can tell about my super alter-ego Butterfly girl. Not even my best friend Jenny Treacher knows and we’ve been best friends since forever but I don’t want to put her at risk or my mom and dad. That’s why I have got to keep it a secret. To most people who know me I’m just plain, old, geeky Katy Pillar; the last person in the world they would suspect of being a glamorous costumed heroine. But my Grandmother must have seen something special in me for her to leave me the magic butterfly pendant in her will. My Grandmother was a wise, wonderful old lady and I loved her a lot. I miss her so much now she’s gone. The pendant is supposed to be a Romany charm or at least that’s what my mom told me when I showed it to her. You see, my Grandmother was a Romany gypsy and the pendant has been handed down from mother to daughter in our family for generations because of its amazing power. Of course, I didn’t believe any of that stuff about gypsy magic at first and, though I felt some weird sort of tingle the first time I put it on, I thought maybe it was like my Grandmother connecting with me from the spirit world; like there was a piece of her in that pendant. Anyway then, I remember, me and Jenny had to go with our History class on a school trip to the Natural History museum ; part of a class project on Egypt and mummy’s and stuff. And then when we were sitting opposite these big golden caskets, pretending to take notes but really just goofing off that’s when one of the caskets started creaking open and then this creepy old mummy started coming to life and then me and Jenny were like Oh my God! and we both just started screaming and running for the exit. Then there was, like, broken glass flying everywhere and all the people in the museum were running and yelling and this thousand year old mummy guy with like these big green glowing eyes started making a speech like he was going to bring about the end of the world and that’s when the sky outside the museum started to go dark. It looked really awesome but not in a good way. And then the mummy started to shoot these bright green fireballs at everyone. Luckily that’s when my magical butterfly pendant started doing this weird thing it does, like flapping its silver wings and waving its little antennae and then the next thing I knew there was like this big blinding, flash of light and suddenly I wasn’t little, geeky Katy Pillar anymore; I was this glamorous, gorgeous supergirl with big butterfly wings and a superhero costume and everything. I just couldn’t believe it at first. I thought maybe I was just having a really bizarre kind of dream but then that old mummy started blasting me with some of those bright green fireballs and somehow my big butterfly wings kind of wrapped themselves around me to protect me. That’s when I thought. Even if this is just a dream, it’s so cool. So then I just decided to go along with it and that’s when I discovered I could fly. Not that well at first, I’ve got to admit because I crashed into the museum walls a few times and hit my head off the ceiling but, once I’d kind of got the hang of it, I was soaring and diving and flying about in the air just like a butterfly. And then I realized I had lots of other neat powers too, like one where I change colour so that I look almost invisible. Kind of like a camouflage thing. That let me sneak up on the mummy so that I could steal away his magic serpent crown; the one that had brought him back to life after thousands of years. After that he went back to being an old, decrepit, dead mummy and I realized I wasn’t dreaming ‘cause then all these people from the local papers turned up and wanted to take my picture and the curator of the museum wanted to shake my hand. I guess it was kind of cool. But then something really, really awful happened. Billy Price, this older boy that I have a really big crush on said to his friends that he thinks Butterfly Girl is really hot. How is Katy Pillar supposed to compete with someone as glamorous as Butterfly girl? OMG, apparently alien terrorists have just broken into the school and have hijacked the Principles office. Oh well. Just another job for Butterfly Girl.
