WHEN WE WERE ANIMALS

some say that man evolved
from something that crawled out of lakes
some sprouted wings and flew off
others hugged the ground like snakes

some roamed around in herds
while some perched solo in a tree
and some of them turned into you
while some turned into me

life grew more complicated
as our brains grew smarter cells
we developed scenes of heaven
we created our own hells

but maybe life was easier
before we strove for change
back then, when we were animals
life wasn't near as strange

we disguised our naked bodies
even when the weather warmed
we built our little cages
in the cities where we swarmed

we began to form a system
with a framework made of rules
to make our struggles easy
we invented many tools

we all turned into scientists
collecting useless facts
we built up nervous tension
and forgot how to relax

what used to be so simple
we devised to rearrange
back then, when we were animals
life wasn't near as strange
