Life’s Great Carnival

An
Infant’s
heart begins
to beat like a
distant booming drum;
coming nearer and growing
louder, the closer it becomes.
And it leads a carnival parade
of life’s magical, colourful things;
all that Nature’s skilful hands have made;
Summer; Autumn; Winter ; Spring;
bright skies tied with rainbow ribbons
and tinkling bells of twinkling stars;
starfish, hummingbirds, butterflies, gibbons;
all the fish and birds and beasts there are.
And the bright sun shines like a big brass band;
all its beams like slide trombones
and they make lakes flash like a cymbal crash
and turn rivers to xylophones.
And there’s a pretty tent in every flower
pitched up by a small green stem
and if you’d stop and look for at least an hour
you’d find a wonder in each of them.
