For Lily

She wants a house in the country
Fences as white as her wedding dress
And her husbands teeth
With a porch big enough for a swing
That won't mind being used
Every Sunday morning,
And a driveway made for learning
How to trust two wheels
Instead of four.
She wants grass and glasses
Of iced tea,
On picnic blankets big enough
For a family,
Of however many makes her happy
And a sun that shines
Year-round
Hot enough to melt away her troubles.
You see,
What she wants is a little thing called happiness.
Something she can't seem to find
In a place where the streets are all
Lined the same,
And where even the stars are too busy
To come home at night.
So what she wants
Is to pack her suitcases
Full of clothes for warm weather,
And to wave goodbye to a city of lights
From thousands of miles overhead.
Even so,
What she wants is not to leave,
What she wants is to go back home.
