Day One
“Hey, faggot.”
“Don’t insult yourself.”
“What did you just say?” A strong arm hooked around a small blond boy’s chest, his back hitting the lockers with a sharp metallic clang.
“I don’t think I stuttered.”
“You keep pushing my buttons the wrong way, Neo.”
“You keep pushing me against lockers, Jake.” The blond boy sneered in his face, no real venom in his voice. Jake growled and applied a touch more pressure, not really hurting the lanky blond, until Neo turned his blue eyes away.
“Heh. That’s what I thought.” Jake snorted letting go and walking off, leaving Neo to stumble back on his feet. The green eyed boy rubbed his chest and let out a small sigh.
A pair of light blue eyes took in the scene with distaste. The tall black haired boy with red bangs frowned. He pulled his boyfriend along a little faster, a smaller boy with jade green eyes and faded black hair with blonde bangs looked up at him curiously, following his gaze to Neo.
“Hey, are you okay?” The blue eyed boy stopped in front of the shorter blonde boy, looking down at him. His boyfriend shrank back slightly, his shy nature taking over. He focused his attention on his hand intertwined with the taller male, anxiety stirring in him.
Neo glanced up seeing none other than popular bad boy Keygen and his little puppy, Joey. Cute. The blond looked away straightening up despite the pain searing across his back.
“I’m fine.” He said shortly, the words coming out softer than he had intended.
“You sure? That guy is huge.” Keygen said his tone cheerful. “You should probably avoid that in the future if you plan on living, because let’s be honest here, he could have flattened you.” Neo glanced up at him and gave halfhearted shrug.
“I'll keep it in mind.” He murmured bending down and grabbing his backpack, which had fallen off in the issuing mental battle with Jake. He slung it over his shoulder and cast the two a passive check out before turning and going on his way.
“Beware of the lockers.” Keygen called after him. “You probably still fit.” Neo paused and turned to look at them something flickering in his head before it was squashed and filtered out.
“I... did you really just...” Neo’s eyebrows twitched and he glanced at the lockers and then down at himself. Keygen was right... How had he not been shoved in them yet? Joey made a face, also glancing at the lockers with a weary expression.
“Just a tip.” Keygen said kindly. “If he bothers you again, you should let me know.” Keygen gave him a devious wink. Neo shifted and eyed him warily.
“I can take care of myself.” He said bluntly, pushing some of his fair, overgrown, hair from his eyes in an attempt to look in control.
“Mmm.” Keygen said, smiling. “I can see that. If not to help you then do it for my benefit. I like some drama once in a while.” He shrugged. Joey moved away from the taller male slightly, his hand still interlocked with Keygen’s.
“N...Neo right?” Joey said quietly. Neo’s slightly hazy gaze turned to Joey and he gave a quick nod.
“Oh, uh… we have English together. Maybe I can...sit by you?” He said awkwardly, glancing up at the blonde nervously. “Or not...only if you want.” Keygen smiled, glancing down at his boyfriend with an amused expression. Neo blinked at the boy, baffled.
“You can sit wherever you want...” He said sharply... and looked away. “if it happens to be next to me, I’m not going to bite your head off or anything.” He mumbled.
“Look at you.” Keygen grinned, pulling his hand and by extension, Joey, closer. “Making new friends.” He messed up the smaller boy’s hair, carefully fixing it afterwards.
“Stop it.” Joey swatted at his hand playfully. “I’m trying to be normal, you’re ruining it.” He complained, glancing at Neo worriedly.
“Calm down. You heard the man, you can sit next to him if you would like. He doesn’t bite. I’d love to tell you that nobody does and that you should talk to people more often, but sadly some of them do indeed bite, and I trust you will let me know the moment you find one that does.” He said grinning but still half serious.
“I know… and I do talk to people.” Joey defended, shaking his hair out.
“Other than me, love.”
“I am. I… I talked to Neo.”
“I’m so proud.” Keygen smirked. Joey gave him a mildly unamused look.
Neo watched their interactions silently before scratching the back of his neck and feeling like a third wheel. The urge to spontaneously say something stupid rose up and then faded just as quickly. He turned on his heel and started walking away, forgetting he had been holding conversation. He needed to get to class.
“See you’re scaring him away.” Joey frowned. He turned to Neo. “See you in class, Neo…” Joey called after him, not sure if he could hear him. Neo lifted a hand up in a halfhearted backward wave as he walked.
“Speaking of class, love.” Keygen looked down at him. “We should get going. We’re late.” The smaller boy nodded and led the way. Keygen let himself be pulled along as they headed for their English classroom.
Neo found the English room and paused staring at it... they were all in the same class... he should have waited to walk with them..? He shook his head of the useless thoughts, pulling the door open.
“Fuck this shit! It’s so fucking useless! I don’t need any of this!” A bright blue eyed boy with black hair was screaming at the teacher.
“You are free to leave.” The teacher deadpanned, sick of the kid’s shit. The teacher leaned back, baseball hitting the ground and jumping back to his hand in a rhythmic timing. His dark eyes staring the boy down.
“And you’re free to go fuck yourself.” the blue eyed boy replied. “This assignment is stupid and so is this class. God. Just…” He paused for a moment before flipping the long table, sending his own things along with the three other students’ beside him, flying onto the floor. The creaky table fell with a thud.
“God, you and English can just…go to hell.” He hissed, starting for the door, the tail strapped to the back of his jeans swishing as he stormed out. He got to the door, stopping short in front of a taller blonde boy.
“Save yourself the trouble.” He hissed, “This class is shit. And so is the teacher.” He said, a little louder to make sure the teacher heard him. He pushed past the boy.
“Right...” Neo said doubtfully, not really recognizing the person who thought it was a good idea to touch him.
“Yeah, right.” The blue eyed boy turned to glare at him. Neo’s eyebrows shot up and he turned his body to face the kid.
“No need to repeat what I say.” He said sassily. The boy narrowed his eyes, giving a short huff of anger.
“No need to be a prick.” the boy looked him up and down, hate sparking in his cold gaze. Neo stared back before glancing away uninterested.
“How unimaginative.” He muttered. The dark haired boy moved towards him quickly, bringing up his fist and landing a punch to the boy’s face angrily.
“Shut your fucking mouth. You don’t know anything about me so shut the fuck up.”
Neo’s head snapped to the side and he tensed his eyes flashing murder, before everything fell away in his head and he shifted to his heels, eyeing the boy blankly.
“Eten!” The English teacher snapped, glancing between the two problem students of his class. “Office!” He said sharply. “Neo...you too.” He continued, glaring at them like they killed his puppy. The blond glanced over at the teacher and then at Eten, frowning and turning on his heel, walking.
“Fine. Maybe the principal will meet me halfway this time. Prick.” Eten turned around, rolling his eyes and heading for the office, glaring daggers at the taller blonde.
Keygen and Joey rounded the corner of the hall, walking slowly, clearly in no hurry. Keygen raised his eyebrows as Eten stalked away from the classroom, roughly passing Neo and heading for them. Keygen raised his and Joey’s arms up as Eten passed under them, seemingly not even noticing their presence. Joey looked after him confused. Keygen looked after him as well before facing forward.
“The hell is wrong with that kid?” He asked Neo, his expression both confused and amused.
“He flipped a table and stormed out of English.” Neo offered, with a shrug. “He’s boring.” he thought to add.
“Oh I think I know him.” Joey spoke up. “Umm… Eten. He usually sits in front of me.”
“He looks like a crab.” Keygen made a face. “Where are you going? Not to class?” He asked the shorter blonde.
“No. I have to go to the principal.” Neo said with a shrug.
“What for?” Keygen looked at him in surprise. “You just got to class didn't you?” Neo blinked at him.
“Why do you care?” He asked, voice a little more sharp than he intended. He turned his face away as his aggressiveness faded and he let out a small breath. “I argued with him.” Neo answered, almost apologetically.
“I’m just curious.” Keygen shrugged, taking another short glance back at Eten moving quickly away.
“You shouldn't bother with him.” Joey offered softly. “He’s always angry in class.”
“Oh, yes. He sounds like a Joy.” Keygen rolled his eyes. “Well I think it’s stupid that you have to go just because he does. Come to class.” He said with a smirk. Neo let out a small sound, neither agreeing nor disagreeing.
“Maybe... tomorrow.” He said thoughtfully, tilting his head to the side and crinkling his eyebrows together as he thought. “Or... never.” That sounded good to him.
“Never?” Keygen let out a short laugh. “Don’t we all wish?” He rolled his eyes. “If you skip too many times I suppose they’ll just suspend you eventually.”
“You shouldn't be skipping that many.” Joey looked up at Keygen who made a face.
“I hate English.” He said.
“Why? You don’t do anything in that class.” Joey shook his head before turning his attention back to Neo. “You should come, then we can sit together…” He smiled softly. Neo just stared at him...
“Kay...”
“Onward!” Keygen said cheerfully, heading towards class pulling Joey behind him.
“You’re really excited about going to the class you hate.” Joey gave him a look of confusion.
“Only because I am accompanied by your lovely selves.” He grinned. Neo glanced at him as he followed.
“Whatever makes your float boat... I mean boat float.” Neo corrected himself... o.o Keygen gave a short chuckle and glanced back at him.
“You’re so silly.” He said happily. “Come on children.” He pulled Joey ahead of himself and held the door, ushering him and Neo into the classroom.
“You! Why are you back?” The teacher asked spotting Neo. “Go file a charge against that boy for hitting you.”
“...that’s what you wanted me to do?” Neo asked scratching the back of his neck.
“Yes.. Why else would I send you up with him?”
“To... get rid of me...?” Neo asked unsure. The teacher let out a huff and threw his head on his desk.
“Go sit down. Read chapter twelve.... all of you.”
“Yes sir. I mean Kass. Right away.” Keygen made a show of saluting the light haired teacher and marching to a table with three open seats, sitting by the window and pulling Joey to sit beside him and leaving his other side free so he could sit by Neo.
“Sorry for being late.” Joey apologized for all of them.
Neo stared at them before moving to his usual seat next to Lighter, the class ginger. Joey’s face fell slightly as he watched Neo go. He looked down at the desk and let out a sigh.
“Maybe tomorrow, love. It’s not the end of the world. You still have me.” Keygen pulled the boy into a hug, ignoring the squealing of the chair legs against the floor as he pulled it. Joey let out a huff, his face turning red.
“Stop it, we’re in class.” He said softly.
“Are you ashamed of me?!” Keygen pulled him back, his hands on his shoulders.
“No.” Joey said, rolling his eyes at the drama in Keygen’s voice.
“That’s my boy.” Keygen pulled him in again excitedly.
Lighter glanced over at Neo, curiosity flashing in his gaze. “Are you friends with him?” He asked. Neo glanced at the blue eyed boy in mild surprise, he usually kept to himself.
“Mmm... depends on your definition of friends.” He replied.
“Oh? How do you define it?” Lighter asked, looking back to his work.
“Uh....Probably someone I've communicated with...more than once.” He decided halfheartedly.
“Hmm, Interesting. Then maybe I’ll talk to you tomorrow.” He said, not looking up. “To be honest, you really shouldn't associate with Keygen, in my opinion. He’s… irritating. So is his boyfriend.” Neo glanced over at the boy before pulling out his book.
“Joey seems... fine.” He said, not really defending, just pointing out his opinion.
“He’s also a sheep.” Lighter shrugged. “But each to their own. Stupid is as stupid does.” He made a face. Neo gave the smallest twitch of his lips casting a glance at the two.
“Point.”
“Gross.” Lighter turned to look back at them. “You guys are gross.” He said loud enough for them to hear. Keygen gave him a dark look, still holding Joey close. He opened his mouth to say something, and glared when Lighter simply turned back around in his chair and started in on his work again.
“Stupid Ginger.” Keygen muttered.
“Hmm, I’m a full red head and you’re a bottle ginger who couldn't even finish the damn job.” Lighter replied, deciding it wasn't worth the effort to turn around. Keygen gave a short huff, deciding it was best to not reply. Neo watched them before pulling open his bag and pulling out bottle of water and a McDonald’s happy meal. He opened the to go bag and pulled out the French fries, stuffing one in his mouth happily. Lighter side glanced, looking from the food to the blonde, staring at him.
“Wow. Classy.” Neo gave a small hum, turning the fries, offering before he busied himself with unwrapping the burger and opening his textbook to the chapter... at the same time. Lighter raised an eyebrow at the scene, a small, amused smile pulling at his lips.
“I’m okay, thanks.” He declined the food, opting to watch the boy.
Keygen stared down at his assignment, frowning. He looked around before crumpling the paper into a tight ball and aiming at the back of Lighters head. He closed one eye and got ready to catapult the ball.
“Keygen…” Joey said with warning in his tone. “No.”
“Oh come on.”
“No.” Joey continued writing.
“But…”
“No.”
“Killjoy.”
“Instigator.” Joey replied instantly.
“You’re getting a sassy mouth.” Keygen eyed him. “Who are you and what have you done with my Joey?”
“Oh calm down. You don’t want to get into another fight do you?”
“More like you don’t want me to get suspended and be out of school again.” Keygen shot back, smiling as the smaller boy glanced up at him, his face flushing.
“Shut up.”
“Both of you take Joey’s advice. Some of us actually take our classes seriously.” Lighter spoke up.
“Fucking…” Keygen started.
“Let it go.” Joey looked up at the ginger nervously.
Neo flipped the page and took a bite of his burger, eyes running down the pages before flipping again. Eyes ran down... flip page.... take a bite... eyes down flip page... eyes down flip page. Bite- oh... end of chapter... Neo blinked and shut his book, fully focusing on his food.
“Omn nom nom.”
“You read that whole chapter already?” Lighter looked over at him, slightly disbelieving. Neo glanced at him and gave a weak shrug, eating another fry.
“I guess.”
“You guess or you know.” Lighter said automatically. “Never mind.” He shook his head, glancing from the book to Neo again briefly. “In the text, who was it that killed the dreaded beast Grendel?” He asked suddenly.
“Beowulf...” Neo cast the boy a look that said, duh.
“Impressive.” Lighter said, smiling slightly. “Isn't it neat that the story is that old and that some German just told it over and over again until some fool finally wrote the damn thing down?”
“...The story’s... Swedish...” Neo said awkwardly crumpling up the paper remains of his food and shoving it in the bag.
“Touché.” Lighter’s smile widened even more and continued to scribble on his paper
Neo stuffed the bag back in his backpack and pulled out his
