YOGA CLASS PUPPY
I saw a little girl in yoga class
4 ft 10in 80 lbs all smooth formed
Flesh. I thought, “She will have it easy.”
The teacher asked, “Is anyone new?”
She didn’t raise her hand but
When class began she could not do the
Moves. There was no impediment,
no age nor body fat.
She just flopped around like a ragdoll.
She could
Put her small body at angles
no stiff adult could achieve
But she had no control over it.
She wasn’t even trying to get things right.
We would all be trembling with the effort
Of stretching muscles wall to wall- she would not try
At all. She would just flop around, a fish
Out of water, a puppy off her leash
Running manic in the park.
The class moved on to balance. She didn’t
Have any. She just kept falling over and right away gave up.
The rest of us struggled and sweated and tried to
Achieve the pose. We worked to position our feet
And hands with elegance and grace and get
It just right. She was never on point like the rest
Of us, a sign she didn’t know what she was doing.
Sometimes she would roll over a hip or bend her knee
At an angle no grownup ever could achieve but it wasn’t
The correct pose, just random movement she could do.
She looked confused, yet unaware of what was
Different. Just like a puppy
Who couldn’t control what her muscles were doing.
