Heaven that's us

This is what I expect all the time: the other
is taking away your freedom. She states
what is good. What beautiful. What amusing.
The other. You should walk around her with
a wide curve. As if you already understand.
What is good, what beautiful, what amusing.
You take off your hat, you smile and disappear
in the courteous fog of your daily trades.
2.
That's why I did not respond when
I encountered you in the train to Vladivostok.
You gave out sweets to fellow travellers.
I refused to accept them. I know your likes.
Today you're acting good-natured.
Tomorrow I am feeling your claws in my neck
of 'there's no such thing as a free lunch."
I preferred to look out of the window.
Saw how a Russian peasant built a snowman.
3.
When we arrived in Vladivostok.
Nothing that indicated: this is our destination.
You stood outside at the turbulent platform.
I lingered. Because it suited my life?
Because delaying was for me as common as
breathing, eating, sleeping?
Finally the conductor. He pushed me off the train.
After all, a respectful action.
Otherwise, I would probably be still in.
4.
So, I stood there in a ghostly white world.
Did I freeze? Was I alone?
Who had told me to be here?
You came and took my fleshy white hand.
As if it should be like this. As if this was agreed upon
and you knew a little more of it.
But why did you wait for me?
Why did the sun linger from setting?
Why did the massive boats remain in the harbour.
Why did Lukyan leave the beet juice soup
simmering upon the merciful fire?
5.
The other. Did I not flee for her?
The other. Weren't you that?
How could you wipe the frozen tears of my cheeks?
How could it be that you waited until I
was completely thawed?
And laughed at what I stated.
You stood just beside me.
Soft as warm snow, charming as a spicy buss.
Whispered amused: 'Heaven, that's us'.
