On my Daughter Learning to Ride

She could barely walk, but
she must learn to ride, she says. 
 
Still stumbles when she runs,
but astride the pony 
she’s this winged, sunshine child
squeals with delight
 
the same as when I’d jogged her
on my knees, when we’d sing,
‘This is the way the ladies ride...
 trit-trot, trit-trot, trit-trot...’
 
Holds tight to the reins
and I hold my breath...put 
my faith in her young teacher –
her life in his hands as, 
 
‘Again’, she squeals, then 
calmly commands, ‘Walk on,’
as if doing it for decades – pony tail
streaming in the wind,
 
and so they toss their manes....
freedom’s envoys
 
her muddied jodhpurs,  the pony’s 
soft pelt...its sweet, clover breath, 
 
a host of  delicious things, undiminished,
despite the mad march
of the years.

Nice imagery with the trit trot and pony tail streaming in the wind. Loved the winged sunshine child. Beautiful heartfelt last stanza...and lovely photo.

Oh! Tina,

this is definitely a poem to treasure. Looking through the eyes of a child and the innocence they hold, brings back the importance of those heart felt memories.

Such an opportunity that she could learn, but what I like about the poem is the naturalness, the real enjoyment, not a posh just wanting to do it to keep up with my friends. And lovely to remember the smells and mud! Rhiannon

Tina, this is so fuzzy and gorgeous, full of liberating horsey language and a daughter's triumph. Sometimes a poem features lots of words that appeal to the senses and this is one of them.Reminds me of the 'Wild horses I wanna be like you..' song, too.
