A Dark Art…
I am both amused and alarmed by the trend in social media and as each year passes, and more disillusioned with the media in general.
Yet I cannot stand here and say I did not want to believe all that they told me. Especially when it was what I wanted to hear. Then it suited me to swallow all that was said as if it were the plain truth.
I suppose I am arguing against myself here. It must be nigh on impossible to hide things in today’s world, distort them or misinterpret what is going on with so many observers twittering or whatever it is they do. The landscape has changed radically on that score I suppose.
How many times do we hear someone say they have been ‘misinterpreted’ or misquoted? Mainly because they have and here I have to defend the media (even though I don’t want to) because too many speak first and think later, or are unable to express themselves clearly.
The dark art of media interpretation is a complex one. Just like crime we never get to meet ‘Mr Big’ and vent our spleens on the presenter, front man, call them what you will. There are honest media folk out there, but my take is that they have to survive in a cut-throat world and have to swallow the bitter pill of reality when trying to pass on to us, the assembled masses what is going on. The reality being summed up by that famous quote ‘Never let the truth get in the way of a good story’.
I suppose I might be offending with my thoughts, but before you accuse me examine yourself. What side are you on, fact or fantasy?
