Once upon a time, a mouse was playing in a little girls dolls house, trying on the pretty clothes of the dolls when a cat came sniffing about and, smelling the mouse, knocked upon the door of the dolls house with its paw.
Thinking quickly the mouse, grabbing hold of one of the lady dolls poked its head through one of the windows of the dolls house and, putting on a female voice, asked,
"Hello? Whose knocking at the door of my house?".
The cat was startled to see the doll talking to him but, thinking it the lady of the house, bowed, courteously, saying
"I'm sorry madam but I was certain I smelled a mouse in your house".
"No", said the mouse, making the doll shake its head, "There are no mice in this house. Please go away".
The cat sniffed at the house again, he could definitely smell a mouse, he thought.
"Well perhaps he's hiding", said the cat, "Mice are very good at hiding".
The mouse sighed, realising that the cat wasn't going to give up easily and so, putting down the lady doll, he picked up a soldier doll that was lying in the dolls house and poking its head through the window put on a gruff soldiers voice.
"Here you!", he said in the soldiers voice, "Didn't you hear what my wife said. Clear off before I get my gun and shoot you".
Hearing this the cat became terribly frightened and so he went away as quickly as he could and, seeing the cat leave, the mouse gave a sigh of relief and went on playing.
Not long afterwards, however, the cat came back wishing to apologise to the owners of the house but as he was bending down to knock upon the door of the house he heard something from within, the sound of the mouse talking to himself and, peering in through a window of the house saw the mouse dressed in the soldiers uniform strutting around and saying,
"Oh what a foolish cat, to think that those dolls were really talking to him and what a clever mouse I was to think of fooling him in that way. Clever and brave".
Realizing that he'd been tricked, the cat picked up the dolls house and shook it.
"Come out of there you", it said, "I knew I'd smelled a mouse. Come out so I can eat you up".
The mouse started to panic.
"What am I going to do now?", it said, running round in circles.
Just then however, the mouse noticed something in the corner of the dolls house that gave it an idea and, a second later, the mouse, poking its nose out of a window, said to the cat,
"Alright, you win, Mr Cat. You're far too clever for me. I'm just going to come out and let you eat me like you said".
So the cat sat outside the door to the dolls house and waited to pounce upon the mouse as soon as it came out and, not a moment later, it saw the mouse come scurrying out of the door and, with a fearsome yowl, leapt upon it.
The moment it did, however, to its astonishment, the cat saw another little mouse come running out of the dolls house and then, looking at what it had pounced upon, saw a wind up clockwork mouse in its paws, its key still whirring round.
Laughing at the foolish cat, the real mouse then ran all the way home.

Delightful tale!

I really enjoyed this tale, despite being a cat lover!
Just a suggestion...perhaps instead of 'the cat became terribly frightened' you could say 'the cat's hair bristled and it's whiskers trembled'.
Children will love it!
