Helpless Thing
From the first fumbling light
Of dawn’s bugle call.
He possesses my waking hours
In total devoted care.
Not for an instant can I rest.
Should this helpless scrap of humanity
Stumble and falter ere now.
Washing, feeding, caring in
Ouroboros cycling without end.
My guiding hand unseen
Directs his every need.
I do the work of many
And all for this needy one
Never stopping, never ending
I answer every ego-driven call
Dusk long abed
No happy ending in my sight
Just an Everest of washing
To pass away the night.
Each closing thought the same…
Why did I marry him at all?
