Once upon a time, a little tree grew in a wood and the little tree had a great ambition.
"I am going to be the tallest tree in the wood", it said.
And so, stretching out with all its might, the tree grew upwards; it grew as tall as it could grow until, just as it had dreamed, it became the tallest tree in the wood and all the other trees looked up to it with admiration.
But even though it was now the tallest tree in the wood, the tree was not happy for, as it had grown larger so had its ambitions and now it said,
"I am going to be the tallest tree in the world".
And so then, stretching with all its might, the tree grew upwards once again, higher and higher and taller and taller it grew until, finally, it became, just as it had dreamed, the tallest tree in the world.
But not only was it the tallest tree in the world, it had the broadest, leafiest branches in the world and they spread out so far and wide that they covered the entire sky.
Unfortunately, because the trees branches covered the entire sky they also, like a giant parasol or umbrella, blocked out the sun and stopped the rain from falling so that all the trees and plants below were plunged into perpetual drought and darkness and, when that happened, because the other plants in the forests and fields could get no sun and water they started to wither and die.
"What shall we do?", all the farmers of the world wondered, gathering together in a big international conference, "All our plants are dying because that giant tree has blocked out all the sun and rain".
Finally, when famine started to spread across the planet, it was decided that the tree should be cut down and a giant saw was constructed with ten thousand sharp teeth that was pulled back and forward, on long ropes, by two large gangs of a thousand men for a hundred days and nights.
"Stop!", cried the giant tree, feeling the men below sawing at its trunk, "What are you doing? Stop that!".
But the men wouldn't stop; they kept on sawing and sawing until, finally, with a deafening creak like the earth splitting and a deafening crash like the sky falling, the tree fell to the ground.
It fell flat across the earth which, because the earth is round, meant that it had to wrap itself right round the earth but the people of the earth cheered because they were just happy to have the sun back again and, when the sun shone and the rain fell upon the earth, all the plants and the crops of the world started to grow again and when that happened then the famine that had blighted the people ended.
"What", you might ask, "Is the moral of this tale?".
Well, its a simple one.
"It is alright to be the tallest tree in the world just as long as you remember all those beneath you".
