If you please

If you please,
think me an autocrat... a callous, unyielding idiot.
That,
I am not.
I cannot move the winds or change
the political tides,
small and weak am I,
nor have I much less caused Brexit.
Why do you charge me thus with false accusations?
Have I done anything amiss?
Do you not know that France is always dear to me
unless I face dire calamity?
How are you in that Land of Roland?
Does it seem different somehow,
relative to its motion?
Please, have pity on me for all the world
seems to go against me for a
petit sin.

The voice here is wonderfully

The voice here is wonderfully detached and erudite. Great tone to this contemporary poem.
