Entomophobia
By queen beatle
- 1845 reads
Winged things are fine when silent.
When the sun is slowly dying
With strands of honeyed light in feeble protest
Clouds of midges loiter on country paths
Rising off the pebbles like steam.
I forge on through like an ancient hero
An entomophobic Hercules
With a sleeve clamped over my face
For fear of tiny ticklers
In cavernous nasal cavities.
Buzzing things are fine when noticed.
I sit and watch the bumblebees
Humming as they amble through their day
Dusty and warm from August pollen
Their gentle drone a floral symphony.
So a bee to the eye is no small delight;
Yet nothing inspires such brief terror
As an unexpected whining too close to my head
Biased by blindness, I bolt in a spasm
And leave the teeming meadow to the bees.

Beautiful imagery. Full of
Beautiful imagery. Full of sound and the ticking of insect life. Reminded me of Yeats in places - especially the teeming meadow and classical allusion.

Liked the imagery, the languid feel of the poem, the way it summoned up a sense of warmth, long days, summery-autumn colours; but also the way it contrasted that with the more immediate and practical fear of insects. The "entomopobic Hercules" was great :)

This is a great mix of beauty and a little humor. It was a pleasure to read and effectively evoked my senses. Well done!

naivity
Beautiful! Glad you're submitting again Morwenna. Nothing you ever wrote is foolish, indeed I really hope you can retain some of your early naiveness and spontaneity.
Hope you're still well after the studies and all the learning and that. As for me, I'm still stuck here. Please keep on writing and posting!
Keep well! Tom
